The US State Department has formally designated Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and and its aliases as part of the al-Qaeda branch in Syria – Jabhat al-Nusra (al-Nusra Front).
The State Department announced its decision on May 31, 2018, over a year after Jabhat al-Nusra once again changed its name branding itself as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham was formed in Syria on January 28, 2017 by Jabhat Fateh al-Sham and its allies. Jabhat Fatah al-Sham was a brand used by Jabhat al-Nusra from July 2016 to January 2017. Jabhat al-Nusra particiapted in the final phase of the battle for the city of Aleppo in 2016 using this very brand. The mainstream media willingly ussed the Jabhat al-Nsura rebranding to claim that the Syrian Army and its allies were battling the so-called “moderate opposition” in the city.
Now, when Jabhat al-Nusra has lost most of its influence across the country, Washington has decided to accept the reality and to designate new brands of Jabhat al-Nusra as a part of the terrorist group.
