On January 7, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) launched an attack to capture the town of Gharanij north of Hajin in southeastern Deir Ezzor from ISIS, according to the official Facebook page of “al-Shaitat Lightning”, one of the SDF Arab units. The source added that the SDF opened a route to allow ISIS fighters to withdraw towards Hajin.
Meanwhile, the SDF announced that its fighters had repelled an ISIS attack on their positions around the village of al-Bahra north of Hajin. SDF fighters killed 27 ISIS fighters and shot down three drones of the terrorist group while repelling the attack, according to the SDF media center.
From its side, the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq said that ISIS fighters killed four SDF members and destroyed a vehicle of the SDF during their attack on al-Bahra. ISIS also shelled the SDF positions inside al-Bahra.
Amaq also reported that ISIS snipers killed a fighter of the SDF in al-Kishkiyah village. A bulldozer of the SDF in al-Baghuz was also destroyed with an ATGM fired by ISIS.
The SDF attack on Gharanij is likely aimed at pressuring the remaining ISIS fighters inside the Hajin after it had failed to capture it during the previous attempts.
