On January 20, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that its fighters captured 50% of the town of Gharanij in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside. The SDF’s media center claimed that the US-backed force killed 151 ISIS fighters and destroyed 4 VBIEDs of the terrorist group during the advance.
The SDF managed to besiege ISIS fighters inside Gharanij few weeks ago. However, the besieged militants conducted several effective counter-attacks against the SDF inside and around the town sloweing down the SDF advance.
From its side, the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq, reported that ISIS fighters launched another counter-attack against the SDF in al-Bahrah village south of Gharanij. A VIBED of ISIS targeted a gathering of US-backed fighters around al-Bahrah. The ISIS-linked news agency claimed that over 30 SDF fighters were killed and 5 vehicles of the SDF forces were destroyed in the VIBED attack.
Amaq also reported that ISIS fighters detonated a booby-trapped building in al-Bahrah that was used by the SDF as a front line position. Several fighters of the SDF were killed or injured in the attack, according to the source.
The SDF has lost dozens of its fighters in the ongoing battle against ISIS in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside. ISIS is showing an effective resistance in the area.
