On February 7, Russian Defense Minister Army General Sergei Shoigu held conference call with the leadership of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
In his speech, Russian Army General revealed that the losses of the Ukrainian military in January amounted to more than 6.5 thousand servicemen.
Despite military assistance to the AFU from Western countries, the Russian military is inflicting heavy losses to the Ukrainian Army. As for the military equipment, in January 2023 alone, the AFU lost:
- 26 warplanes,
- 7 helicopters,
- 208 UAVs,
- 341 tanks and other armored fighting vehicles,
- 40 combat vehicles of multiple rocket launchers.
The head of the Russian military department noted that the United States and its allies are trying to prolong the conflict in Ukraine.
“To do this, they have started supplying heavy offensive weapons, openly calling on Ukraine to seize our territories. In fact, such steps involve NATO countries in the conflict and can lead to an unpredictable level of escalation,” the Russian Defense Minister said.
In their turn, Russian forces continue to grind all weapons and equipment supplied to Kiev both on its delivery routes and in combat positions.
“Realizing that it will not be possible to defeat Russia by military means, the Ukrainian leadership continues to resort to criminal actions to intimidate citizens in the new Russian regions. The armed forces of Ukraine strike residential areas, hospitals, places where civilians are gathering, commit terrorist acts targeting state and social facilities,” Shoigu said.
The Minister reminded that the Ukrainian side refused to cease fire during the Orthodox Christmas, and the Ukrainian military conducted intense shelling during the holiday. In total, the AFU fired over 550 artillery and mortar shells. Ukrainian artillery was suppressed by the return fire of Russian troops.
The Russian Minister confirmed that in January 2023, as a result of the offensive actions of Russian troops in the Donetsk and Zaporozhye directions, the settlements of Soledar, Kleshcheyevka, Podgornoye, Krasnopolye, Blagodatnoye, Lobkovoye and Nikolaevka were liberated. Currently, military operations are successfully developing in the areas of Ugledar and Artemovsk (also known as Bakhmut).

Taking the latter, the losses on average should have been around 250’000 to 400’000 per year, thus 20’000 to 30’000 per month.
What the russian defense ministry reports about january 2023 is thus at about 1/3 to 1/5 of the average…
…OR the stipulated average is about 3 to 5 fold above the real average.
From the two news reports alone (inclusive their links to external sources), it is impossible for me to tell which version being more near reality.

We are talking about KIA/WIA rates much higher than the second world war casualty rates on the western battlefields. Where are the Metternichs and Talleyrands to end this nonsense? Both sides exaggerate the losses in men and material. Actual losses are generally a fraction of these numbers. Exaggeration happens in any war.
As ‘V for Victory’ writes , the number of losses per day is sinking , which is plausible , because the Ukrainians cannot send more troops there to be destroyed. The other reason can be some improvement in the NATO strategy , which saves their soldiers. At last there are always exaggerations , deceit and lies in times of war, that’s why nothing is really confirmed and exact. I believe though , the number of Ukrainian losses given by the Israelis , Turks and Americans is on the whole correct (even if not exact).

All armies do exaggerate enemy losses and both Ukrainian and Russian armed forces are not making any exception at all.
Soviet dictator Stalin claimed during Finnish-Russo Winter War in mid Feb 1940 that “we are already killed 60 000 Finnish white fascists”. Actually Finnish losses where at that time 14 000 KIA and DOW. In Red Squore, early Nov 1941 Stalin claimed that “German fascists has lost 4500 000 men”. At that time German military personal losses had been little bit over 800 000 KIA, MIA and WIA. So truly Russian tradition has been to wildly exaggerate enemy losses. Same happening now in Ukraine.

When it comes to Soviet own losses during Winter War the official Soviet narrative was only 48 000 deaths. Finns claimed 200 000 deaths. In 1990s Krivosheev confirmed 126 000 Soviet soldiers been killed. 2013 study based of database of Soviet military personal losses gave numbers with names of soldiers who died during Winter War: 167 976. Information published by Pavel Petrov. So at the end Soviet losses were much nearer to Finnish claim that what official Soviet narrative was in1940-1991.
