The US military base near the al-Omar oil field in northeastern Syria was targeted with a rocket fire on December 13. The attack was reported by the Syrian pro-government newspaper Al-Watan reports, citing local sources in the province of Deir Ezzor.

Al-Watan was the only local source to publish the news. About 4 explosions were reportedly heard and a plume of smoke was seen in the field area, but no other details about the rocket attack were reported.

Some Russian sources confirmed the attack. However, they were not unanimous in identifying the target. For example, the Russian state news agency reported that several rockets exploded on the territory of the camp of Kurdish SDF fighters, which is located next to the US military base in the Zeiban district.

The US-led coalition and its main proxy in northeastern Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces, are yet to comment on the issue.

The alleged rocket attack on al-Omar came ten days after a similar attack reportedly targeted the base of the the US-led coalition at the CONICO gas facility in the eastern countryside of Syria’s Deir Ezzor.

US-led coalition positions at the CONICO oil facility and al-Omar oil fields came under attack on several occasions in the last few months. Iranian-backed forces in Syria are usually blamed for such attacks.
