Turkish Forces Deploy Air Defense Systems Near SDF Positions in Northern Syria

FILE IMAGE: MIM-23 HAWK missile system

The Turkish military has deployed air defense systems near the town of Afrin in northern Syria. Afrin is controlled by the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Turkish forces deployed at least one MIM-23 HAWK missile system and radars near the town of Dar al-Izzah. Dar al-Izzah is now de-facto controlled by the Turkish military and its local proxies.

Some sources describe the Tukrish decision as a part of preparations for military operation against the SDF.

US air force doesn’t operate there. SAM deployment in that area can’t be good at all.

    • cortisol

They could operate there from Cyprus/Incirlik base

  • Garga

    What? Air defence against PKK?
The system mentioned (HAWK) is apparently also suitable to defence against medium range missiles. I don’t know, Turkey does strange things, if you consider logic.
Perhaps it’s deployment is not meant for PKK at all, but the side which possesses a working airforce or helicopter force, like SAA?

    • cortisol

Or perhaps protection against SDF backers air force from intervening aka USAAF/USN

      • Floyd Hazzard

Not likely, they are still NATO and as such cannot just attack an ally without serious repercussions. But with Erdogan calling Assad a terrorist lately, it is very clear his aim is landgrabbing as much of Syria as he can, much like the Zionists and annexing it unofficially. There is method to his corrupt madness.

        • Solomon Krupacek

          Amen. Told Putin.

        • Eskandar Black

its not a good location for deploying AA systems against the Syrians, not is it necessary as syrian air force is a no match agains the turks. The only strategic purpose for these system being deployed where they are is a cover for turkish special operators than plan to start hitting the PKK and may need air cover against other powers that may not like Turkish operations. These systems are there to assure the security of those troops, not to win an air war against the USA.

Turkey will never dare fire on American aircraft, that’s a pipe dream, this is aimed at the Syrian Airforce, period. It’s a way of minimizing continuous aircraft patrols and flight related expenses for the Turks. You only get the aircraft up when necessary.

          • Eskandar Black

But if you were turkey, would you want the capability?

          • Floyd Hazzard

Of course, but then calling my neighbour terrorists and occupying their land and entrenching forces on it is contrary to international law. In that sense they are no different to Israel and America. They are helping insurgents viewed by the legitimate Syrian Government as terrorists much like they view The Kurds. They can’t criticize The Kurds and America while they are doing the same thing.

        • MeMadMax

          They attacked the russkies…

… The suicide is strong with the turks…

        • Jonathan Cohen

As long as Turkey retains ABORTION RIGHTS, they will have every right to grab territory from the abortion banning Syrian government, as does YPG.

      • Jim Martin

sound like more mindless saber rattling deploying hawks against the Turkish Coup plotters that are coming back as ghost, complete with their own air force.

Maybe the Journalists, the PKK, Gulen and the Armenians also have an air force?

Erdogan is sending messages to the Americans and Russians about invading Afin as “trial balloons” to gauge the reaction to see if he can get away with it

    • TheLulzWarrior

Prevent the US from protecting the Kurds.

The very idea of a Turkish attack on the YPG, given how it would ruin US-Turkish relations, is such an irresistble pleasure!

    • Exactly my thoughts. Turkey is beginning to build a fortress in land they plan to steal. It seems Israel’s example has admirers in Ankara. In fact, Erdogan and Netanyahu are very similar. Who knows? Maybe they were fathered by the same person snd they don’t know it.

    • Ger

Or like the US and/or the Zionist to keep them from delivering their terrorist picked from other locations.

    • Rob

I don’t know how nation have elected such incapable leader like President Erdogan. Instead of solving Middle East issues he think how to take land from Syria. Turkey and Syria both are brother Muslim states but at least they should have to be united together against their common enemy which is US that destabilizing the region of Middle East and taking their resources rich land. They don’t see that the whole Middle East region is passing through turmoil.

      • Joe

I think you got it wrong.
It’s against the Kurds not Assad .

    • Justin

I think turkey is going to take the Kurdish Afrin pocket for itself and eventually a deal will be made with Assad for turkey to annex tis land for itself! This means that the pre-war largest Kurdish pocket will now be apart of turkey which means less risk to both turkey and Syria! Turkey will be able to rule this area with an iron fist and relieve itself of fear from a Kurdish armed attempt to rush towards the Mediterranean where the Kurds can possibly export oil! This is a good thing! This is why Turkey splintered the Kurdish areas with Al-Bab offensive! This stop the two Kurdish areas going up and heading towards the Med!
U can be damn sure Assad is giving this land to turkey (promised with words and hand shakes)! Better for both Syria and Turkey in their common alliance against US backed Kurds! cant have Kurds gaining export routes! Must land lock them! All is good in this situation! We should smile about it!

      • John Mason

Quite possible and it wouldn’t be too difficult to guess that the Kurds won’t like it. Kurds better off with Syria but going by past history the Kurds always seem to make a major error in judgement.

        • 888mladen .

Kurds have always been opportunistic predators. How much can you trust that kind of predatory instinct?

    • Langaniso Mhlobo

Truly your observation is 100% right.

    • You can call me Al

What about an attack on the SDF and a defence against the Yanks ?.

  • Derrick Bonsell

I think it’s directed against Damascus, given the Turkish PM recently stating that they will do everything they can to assure Assad loses power.

    • Joe

Possible against Damascus but more like insurance against US planes when they attack the Kurds.

      • 888mladen .

When did they make last time any decisive move in fighting Kurds?

        • Joe

If the Kurds are to establish s state in North Syria and Assad unable yo move on the Kurds which I doubt, them it is possible Turkey will move in and possibly with Assad’s moving from the South

Them the insurance against US air Attacks

          Very complicated

    • PizzaPineapple

That statement was just please their backed ES-rebels. Erdogan his best chances are to work with the Syrian government.

      • 888mladen .

His best chance is the one that brings the most oil and money into his pockets.

  • qveenz

    The target is Aleppo.

    • PizzaPineapple

      Good luck with that.

  • paul ( original )

I don’t know if I can figure out the Turks, but I sure as hell don’t
    think you can trust them.

    • PizzaPineapple

You can’t trust any one in Syria at this moment.

  • χρηστος

Turks progress in their plans is as slow as a ‘replay’ football scene. They were supposed to attack HTS after agreement with Russia. They occupied Syrian land with the help of FSA along with HTS. Their objective is to attack the Kurds?maybe not really. I think they will stay there to ensure that the Kurds dont link the 2 regions they control. A buffer zone between them. Now the Hawk deployment is a deterrent for Syrian airforce that uses training aircrafts converted to military use, used mainly for close air support. I dnt think they fear the Russians at all. Maybe they have made a deal. But the Sultan hates Assad very much…..feelings are mutual…..so the generals fear a hit and run attack by Syrian jets

    • dutchnational

I think you are correct. Given the earlier reaction of Russia when Turkey shot down a Russian plane entering turkish airspace for a total of 17 seconds, they are unlikely to try again.

On the other hand, can they defferentiate in time between Syrian and Russian airplanes?

      • χρηστος

anti-aircraft systems can identify type of aircraft aproaching them. Syrian fighters are slow, fly low and are easy targets to manpads. Hawks will warn them not to approach …..their radar warnings will be enough…..good move by the Turks, but even so……they are on vacation in Syria…..waiting for what i wonder

        • Akarnanas57

Waiting to be included in the negotiations and get some prize, ANY PRIZE.

          • χρηστος

one thought is that they wait for the new Syria era….they have an army of 25k fsa fighters. Not an easy force for anyone to defeat. maybe they will be given the role of clearing Kurds from Syria (at least from the areas Turkey doesnt want them to be near) with SYrias blessing.

          • dutchnational

Acc to sources, TFSA, a disunited lot of mutually hostile groups, has some 12k fighters of whom hundreds have been defecting as of nov/december.

SDF forces are now somewhere between 100k and 125k, excluding the expanding HXP, the conscript army of Northern Syria. FSA forces have not had one victory against forces now part of SDF since 2012.

Turkey has been mouting the words “invasion of Afrin” since febr/march 2017 and except for shelling and bombing civillians has not done anything.

We will see if 2018 will present a different scenario here.

          • Icarus Tanović

Have you read the article, or you just indiscriminately shelling people around?

          • dutchnational

I read the article. I also react to comments that attract my attention.

Have you read the article or are you just trolling a little?

          • 888mladen .

Forceful conscript? How good is the fighting force that has been forcefully conscripted?

          • dutchnational

You are partly correct given the truly abyssmal performance of most SAA units, even worse for NDF units.

However, HXP is not the fighting force of SDF. It is mainly a holding force, freeing up SDF units to be deployed there command wants them.

        • John Whitehot

“anti-aircraft systems can identify type of aircraft aproaching them”

not necessarily – they can only read speed, height and vector, and get a most general idea about the dimensions. Multirole planes can fly in deceptive ways, making an adversary think he’s confronting L-39s and then he finds out it’s Su-35s..

          • χρηστος

            correct…..

          • dontlietome

            …………..Its called “spoofing”.

      • Doom Sternz

There was no evidence that the Russian plane entered Turkish airspace so why are you selling lies as facts? Russia made the flight data available, the Russian plane did not enter Turkish airspace. Did your nice Dutch nation, the one that claims no others, tell you this?

        • dutchnational

As far as I know the plane was over Turkey for a few seconds.

Given the fact that Turkey has thousands of violations of Greek and Cyprian airspace each year the attitude of Turkey was beyond hypovritical.

          • Doom Sternz

It did, for a very short time, it was over an extremity that the Turks (well Yanks) used as an excuse. The shooting was disgusting, but the Russians did F-up; there is no point pretending it wasn’t.

      • wwinsti

        – can they differentiate in time between Syrian and Russian airplanes?

Yes, unless the Syrians have found a way to fake Russian IFF codes.

        • John Whitehot

“Yes, unless the Syrians have found a way to fake Russian IFF codes.”

          please not this shit again.

  • dutchnational

SDF will be glad to have there missiles near to their front lines.

Those missiles are a grave threat to the vast SDF airforce, consisting of, yes indeed, zero airplanes.

In reality, those missiles can only be a threat against either Russian or Syrian fighter planes. USAF does not have any operations there nor did they ever have them before.

Still, SDF will be glad to have them so near as this will give the SDF the chance to take them if hostilities were to commence. Having those missile will then bolster the SDF positions massively.

          • RichardD

You’re evading the issue, as you always do when you peddle your Zionist garbage here every day trying to divert attention from Jew crime and evil. Which is one of the primary causes of problems in the middle east and on our planet. It’s clear from my comment that the point that I was making is that the Palestinians are Semites and the Ashkenazi, which is most Jews, are European. And that it’s the Jews who are being antisemitic with their crimes against the Palestinians.

        • RichardD

          “Btw as an catholic”

Why would anyone believe you when your comments are pure Zionist and you refuse to even debate anything to do with Jews? You criticize your own alleged homeland, but won’t even debate anything to do with Jews, let alone criticize massive Jew crime and evil.

    • Eskandar Black

The SDF air force is really the US air force, and you may not be so glad when turkish special forces start showing up and throwing your lot of terrorists from the nearest mountain.

      • dutchnational

Nice of you to say so and it would have some merit if one was talking of any area held by SDF, other then Afrin.

No airstrikes by the USAF as of the beginning of USAF involvement in Syria, zero, none.

    • John Whitehot

except that in SDF hands they would last perhaps half an hour, always if they can figure the writings on the radar screens and buttons.

      • Icarus Tanović

Maybe. As the SDF has US trainers, it is also possible that US will train them. Maybe even Israelis or Saudis. Underestimating ones opponents never pays.

    • Jim Martin

maybe they are using the Hawks; a much older system as bait? In hope that the SDF will try to capture them and Erdogan will have a pretext to attack to get them back. A lot of muddled plots coming out of Turkey and this one would be appropriately muddled

    • wwinsti

Hawk missiles are from the 1960s. Ancient as they are, they can still be dangerous to aircraft that aren’t equipped to repel a Sam of any sort. In a pinch, SAMs can be used as ground attack weapons.

After Turkey- a 100% asset of the Deep State- purposely shot down a Russian jet and murdered the pilots- Putin ‘punished’ Turkey by gifting it the s-400 air defense system. Funny, cos Putin has stated Russia will never sell this system to Syria or Iran- cos Israel has ordered this.

Putin has sworn eternal loyalty to the jews of Israel- and thus, at their command, sworn loyalty to the wahhabis of Saudi Arabia as well. Don’t believe me- go google. Putin has happily made multiple public pronouncements to this end.

Is Putin the proud zionist going to save the world from the evil machinations of the UK and USA. Don’t make me laugh.

Putin is tough ONLY when it comes to direct Russian interests. As an Empire Power, Russia is worse than a bad joke- disloyal, untrustworthy, and in the pocket of jewish interests.

Long after Syria was destroyed and the lives of millions of innocent Syrians ruined, Putin stepped in. Syria became a live-fire training ground for Russian forces, and a place to test new weapons and tactics. Putin happily admits this too.

Had Putin moved to prevent the wahhabi invasion in the first place, the Deep State would be frozen and powerless for many years to come. But Putin doesn’t play the Great Game- his zionist ‘advisors’ won’t let him.

PS Turkey’s so-called ‘enemies’ in Syria don’t have an airforce. So why is the air defense system a significant thing? Oh, that’s right cos its really aimed at Assad- funny how Southfront omit this fact.

    • dontlietome

What do you mean “Go Google” ? Who the fuck controls Google………………..and you believe them ??????????? South Front don’t omit facts, not when its so obvious who the missiles are pointed at. Putin could pacify the kebab munchers in hours, or less, and if they have so little regard for their lives, Putin would relieve them of any doubts. The Kebab munchers may try to down a plane of two of air-america, who fly in support of ISIS and the SDF………….. then things might get interesting. Putin is a lot smarter than you, and will be laughing his socks off at the drivel you’ve posted. Your under-estimation of the capabilities of the “Bear” beggar belief, but more so his aims. If you had eyes for the bigger picture, you would be so quick to criticise.

      • Icarus Tanović

That’s right brother. Putin is Alot smarter than those two above thinks and ever will.

    • Willing Conscience (The Truths

No Putin didn’t punish Turkey for shooting down the Russian jet and killing it’s pilot, instead he began the process of creating a small but growing wedge between Turkey and the US. I personally found that a totally gutless reaction, but I’m not fighting for my life as Putin is. As for not selling S-400 to Iran, don’t bet on it.
Putin loyal to Jewish interests, I don’t think so. Putin is firstly loyal to himself and secondly to Russia, which at this moment in Russian history seem to be the same thing.
Putin isn’t tough at all, if he was he wouldn’t have the problems he’s facing in the Ukraine and Crimea, and that’s right next door to him.
As an example of loyalty to an allied country you’re right Putin is CRAP. That old saying, who needs enemies when you have friends like this, comes to mind. If Russia had acted at the very beginning instead of being diplomatic, this destruction of Syria and it’s people would never have happened, and I wish to God he had. Russian media call him a “he man” but I think he’s just a “girly man” [Good on you Arnie].
The fact he got to test lots of new hi tech weapons would have made him very happy, but the Russian soldiers coming home in body bags wouldn’t have, Russian mothers get very angry when their children die.
As to Turkey and Erdogan I can’t see any difference between them and Russia. Everything they do is in their own best interests. The AA systems Turkey deployed in Syria will most probably be used to shoot down Syrian jets, but they’re nearly as likely to target US coalition, or Russian planes if Erdogan deemed it necessary, only Erdogan knows the answer.
If it does work out the US and Turkey get over this growing rift, the S-400 will be made available to the US by Erdogan to reverse engineer, and Russia will be left out in the cold again. Putin has made a big gamble here and it could backfire totally.
So far it looks like Iran and Syria will get their gas pipeline direct to Europe with Turkey and Qatar getting a cut out of it. It’s not the best case scenario for Putin as he wanted to retain his own country’s very large share of that market, but as far as he’s concerned it’s far better than letting the US backed Saudi’s gain control over the European gas market. That’s the only reason all the major players involved in the Syrian conflict are there.
It’s a fight to the death between the US and Russia and Xi Jinping not wanting to lose the only other world power able to stand up to the US, has behind the scenes been backing Syria and Russia. If China didn’t help out in Syria with supplies, equipment and advisers, as well as allowing Chinese investors to invest in Syrian infrastructure, the US wouldn’t be giving China such a hard time over the south china sea. But Xi is a smart fellow and knows what would happen if the Saudi’s and the US got their own pipeline up and running and is firmly backing Russia and by default Syria.

They’re buying S-400s for a reason, the coup attempt and planned murder of the president probably has something to do with it.

        • Joe

Yes, when someone supposedly your ally wants you dead , you take no second chance. Fact is erdogan does not trust the Americans any more or Nato’s systems as they can be manipulated.

The delivery date of S400 is still far off and this system is a make do system in case against US planes.

Doubt US will Attack Turkish troops though as happened in Iraq. US stayed neutral
