Turkey Says It Is Ready To Support ‘Syrian Regime' Against Kurdish Forces

Turkey is ready to support the “Syrian regime” against the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said during an interview with TV 100 on July 17.

The YPG is the core of the Syrian Democratic Forces, which controls vast parts of Syria’s northern and northeastern region with direct support from the US. The PKK enjoys much influence within the group. Turkey has been battling these groups for years now.

Cavusoglu said that Turkey held talks with Iran, a top ally of the Damascus government, on the removal of “terrorists” from northern and northeastern Syria, adding that Ankara “will provide all kinds of political support for the [Syrian] regime’s work in this regard”.

“It is the natural right of the regime to remove the terrorist group from its territory, but it is not right for it to see the moderate opposition as terrorists,” the Anadolu Agency quoted the minister as saying.

Cavusoglu’s remarks are surprising to say the least. Since the outbreak of the war in Syria, the Damascus government have been the main foe of Turkey. Even after the raise of Kurdish forces in 2014, Ankara kept allocating much of its efforts to its proxy war against Damascus.

Turkey is currently preparing to launch a new operation against Kurdish forces in Syria. Russia and Iran have been making efforts to dissuade Ankara from its military plans.

Damascus appears to be determined to support Kurdish forces if Turkey launched a new operation in Syria. In a recent statement, the Syrian Arab Army said that it is fully ready to repel any “aggression” by the Turkish military and its proxies on Syrian territory. Cavusoglu’s remarks may be meant to push Damascus towards a more neutral stand.

I think it’s a good agreement. Tell you why. Kurds are stubborn idiots and do not want any control from Damascus. I think that Assad and Russia should make a deal. Eliminate Kurds, establish a joint Syrian/Turkish control line in Kurdish territory and DESTROY THE KURDS. Break them. Besides, they are US assets and all they do is cause conflict in Iraq, Iran, and Syria. They are a stupid people that cannot get along with anyone.

Attila

There is no such thing called Kurdish territory ..terrorist join force with Yankee and invade Syrian territory.

Akbar

There will/shall be no cooperation between syria and turkey. getting rid of kurds which means that it will just be replaced with another Turk affliated terrorist cell. If Turkey want to attack, Kurds should take fight on themselve with backs from the US. Such scenario will alineate the Turk-US relation further. It will be difficult for Turkey to gain any territorial ground without total support from Syria (in fact, Syria should send some support to Kurds). Therefore, it will be costly process for both kurds and turks regardless the outcome (hopefully and practically with greater cost on kurds and limited territorial gain by turks). Syria then can step in and offer their plan of peace (peace keeping force by Rus led force and SAA and transition of area in control by Kurd to Syria in exchange for some autonomy in smaller region for kurds). If war can not be resolved swiftly, Erdogan needs to worry about his election and Kurds will be certainly weakened.

Atilla, are you sure that you study true history at school? You really made me laugh :) I was lucky in my life that I had the opportunity to study history in the archives. And I’ll tell you what, even in the archives the rulers of this time clean up the archives after themselves!! And what you study in schools can be safely called propaganda, and has nothing to do with history. You can check by reading the textbooks on the back of one story! You will tell lies there, they will tell you lies, I will tell you there is no truth on both sides, only lies!

Iyi Sharkiniz vardi cok eskiden: ” Bu dunya yalan dunya , yalan ,yalan, yalan dunya”

Mr cotton

Is not a surprise!

Turkey wants to send as many Syrian refugees back to Syria as possible. With the PKK/YPG it is difficult. If this entity is defeated territorially then it will be much easier for Turkey to bring the Syrians back home.

the Syrian government had better think carefully because the PKK/YPG has betrayed them several times. the west with the PKK/YPG wants to create a second Israel in Syria

Mr.Turk

Syria is Turkish territory. It is ex-Ottoman. The British took it away from the Ottomans. Now the grandchildren of the Ottomans want it back.

kotromanic

The ottomans came from the mountains and stole byzantium and with them the territories of many people among them greeks, armenians, georgians, arabs, kurds, etc.

Be happy that you kept so much of your stolen empire and be aware that this only happened cause the powers back then who are today all “westerners” wanted to limit russia.

Erdogan is playing a game that before him Tito played. The game led in the end to the destruction of yugolsavia through the US with permission of the russians cause nobody liked them.

You should be carefull to not piss off the russians and the us at the same time. Today it might seem unlikely but just think about it the US is capable to cooperate and to fight everyone. There is nothing which limits them no morals no idiology. They only care about profit. So keep sure they feel cooperating with turkey is more profitable then to dismantle it.

The great chessboard is taking shape. I thought many times that, in the context of the multipolar world order, some kind of neo Ottoman empire needed to be built. After all, Syria alone is easy prey for muricans and fake jews in Israel. Syria is mainly an arab country, with some christian presence, but nonetheless an arab country. And there are christians in Turkey too and certainly they don’t get tortured everyday.

The current international situation requires that Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey sit at a table and redraw the map of the ME. Considering we live in the 21st century, an empire is absurd, but some sort of Arab Union could do it. It would be a master stroke for all the participants, making peace between shia and sunni Islam. A feat that would give them great fame. There is a term for it in the islamic world: “king of kings”.

Russia and Syria, you really have to allow Turkey to clear out the Kurd terrorists. They DO work for the US. Step out of the way and allow Turkey to have its way. We know turkey hates Kurdish terrorists. For as long as Turkey sticks to its declared mission, let them have their way. Making Turkey into an ally will be worth it. You can tell the kurds that if ISIS attacks them, you are with them but if Turkey attacks them, that is not YOUR war. Kurds are a nation within a nation, with their own armed forces, living off of Syrian oil It is not the responsibility of the SAA to protect from Turkey, their ally.
