A U.S. service member in Afghanistan was killed in action on December 23, the Department of Defense reported. US Forces Afghanistan provided no details on how the person was killed or where it took place. However, the Taliban did.
According to the Taliban, the US soldier was killed in an attack on a US military convoy in the Char Dara district of Kunduz province. The attack reportedly resulted in injures among several other foreign troops.
2019 became the deadliest year for US forces since combat operations officially finished at the end of 2014.
Taking into the account the December 23 announcement and depending on how one qualifies a combat-related death, at least 20 US troops have been killed in action in Afghanistan in 2019.
The official number of US troops killed in combat in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion in October 2001 is over 2,400. The number of killed US and US-linked mercenaries remain unclear because the Department of Defense does not report such casualties.
