On December 21, Taliban fighters captured five checkpoints of the Afghan Army and police in Gerishk district of the southern province of Helmand, according to the Taliban news agency Voice of Jihad. The sources said that Taliban fighters captured the checkpoints after they were evacuated by the Afghan Army and police for unknown reasons.

Voice of Jihad reported on December 20 that twelve Afghan soldiers and policemen were killed by Taliban fighters during clashes in the province of Helmand. Moreover, Taliban fighters destroyed a truck of the Afghan Army with an IED.

Meanwhile, Omar Zwak spokesman for Helmand province governor announced that seventeen fighters of the Taliban were killed during a joint operation of the Afghan Army and the Afghan Air Force in Nad Ali district of Helmand on December 21.

Zwak added that the Afghan Army captured several weapons from the Taliban during the operation. However, he didn’t clarify if the Afghan Army secured any area.

The military situation in Afghanistan remains complicated without any real change.
