Last weekend, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied groups from the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA) launched a large-scale advance against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the province of Quneitra. The militants had formed an operation room named Jaysh Muhammad for the purpose and said that their aim was to capture al-Baath town and to reach the countryside of Damascus.

On Saturday, the joint militant forces made some gains against the SAA and even claimed that they seized over a half of al-Baath. However, further clashes showed that HTS and their allies were not able to break the government defenses.

Following a fail of the militant advance, the Israeli Air Force conducted airstrikes on government positions in the province claiming that some projectiles landed in the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights. The airstrikes targeted undefined number of artillery pieces and two battle tanks of the SAA.

On Sunday, the Israeli Air Force carried out airstrikes on the SAA in Al-Baath in Quneitra province for the second day in a row under the same pretext. According to the Israeli military, the airstrikes hit artillery positions and an ammunitions truck.

Following the Israeli strikes, militants launched the second large-scale attempt to break government defense lines in al-Baath but failed to achieve any gains.

On Monday, the Israeli media reported that more projectiles landed in the Israeli-held area and that the Israeli Air Force responded with more airstrikes on SAA positions in the province. If confirmed, this was the third time in a row when the Israeli Air Force delivered airstrikes against Syrian government forces in the area.

At the same time, reports appeared HTS and its allies once again launched an attack against the SAA in al-Baath.

Syrian experts describe the Israeli actions as a clear assistance to the terrorist group fighting the legitimate Syrian government in the border area. According to them, Tel Aviv is deeply concerned over successful SAA operations against ISIS and other militants across Syria. Thus, it takes measures to undermine the Syrian war on terror.

Meanwhile, the SAA Tiger Forces have successfully advanced against ISIS at the Ithriyah-Resafa road. They liberated Bir Abu Alaj, the Syriatel checkpoint and some nearby points, becoming close to a full liberation of the road. This advance is an important step aimed at securing the whole area east of Khanasir.

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have continued storming the ISIS-held city of Raqqah. They encircled the city from the southern flank and clashing with ISIS inside it, including the southern part of the 17th Army Base.

ISIS terrorists used at least 3 VBIEDs against SDF units in Al-Jazra and Al-Idikhar districts of the city. Clashes are also ongoing in Al-Qadisiya and Al-Yarmouk districts.

Okay okay… Israel guys shamelessly supports terrorists as their ally from air with their bombings and where the hell is the great ally of the Syrian army called Russia in all those events?
What does Russia think about? What will Russia do about?
Some one answer me please. I’m some confused.

    • Sam Culpak

Their base is on the other side of Syra. It is like asking what is Turkey doing about it. :P

      • Terence Silvestre Jr.

And what the hell does Turkey have to do with that if the Kurds are not involved, my friend?

    • Wahid Algiers

The cowardly zionists exactly knew the status of the SAA: sovereign, in their own country, in mission against terrorists. For that they invent an pretext (projectiles, but obviously shoot by terrorists) to attack the SAA FROM the other side of the so-called border line. If Russia would answer in any way, Russia would react on the “territory” of the zionists. That makes it unpossible. The only way is to attack the zionists in direct answers of their bombings with suitable weapons. Hard and without any compromises. Otherwise the zionists will go on.

      • Terence Silvestre Jr.

As you say, pure pretexts and very stupid and improbable ones.
Not having enough courage to confront their facts, is very common that the cowards and hypocrites use nonsense excuses to justify themselves.

    • Dustil schmit

Do you honestly think Russia wants to get bogged down with Iran and Israel pitiful pathetic regional games? That is like throwing money down a endless sewer pit.

      • Terence Silvestre Jr.

But the Israeli affront was not to Iran, but to Syria, an intimate Russian ally, I fear.

    • jaimeintexas

The bigger threat is not Israel. Once the Syria’s East is retaken and cleaned, wounds mended and rest given. Then, move West will begin. At this stage, Syria cannot afford to trigger a larger confrontation with Israel. Moral hazards.

      • Terence Silvestre Jr.

What you say is totally understandable.
My problem relates more to the Russian impregnable silence in the face of those Israeli attacks of that last three days, my friend.

        • jaimeintexas

Looking through a dark glass … collection of intel on communications and linkage to aircraft and forward posts, recordings of coordination.
Unfortunately, engaging Israel is tricky, regardless whether Israel is the aggressor. As Saker has pointed, it is chess playing.

Putin – Russian policy is pro Israel.

There will be no response other than to allow the conflict in Syria to keep running, more Syrian deaths, injuries, destruction of equipment and infrastructure.

    • Concrete Mike

Read m’y post below, Do not despair Friend, thèse Israeli air strikes are just à distraction, they accomplish nothing. Russia does not need to respond guns à blazing, because in reality, this is nothing.

Russia is not an ally of Syria, all it is doing is preventing the Saudi pipeline through Syria which requires the Assad government to be in place.

Russia has betrayed Syria which started in 2010.

I fear that the facts are giving you the reason. And how sad if it were so.

Putin will decide his move after he meets Trump at the G20 summit in Germany next month.

    • Abe Manhattan

Russia does nothing because the whole story above is BS. Since the story is BS, there is nothing for the Russians to respond too. Lots of made up anonymous sources with made up opinions. Makes sense, no?

  • Lupulescu Claudiu

Russia should seend there something like s-400 air defense system.
Those israelis just don’t wanna stop supporting terrorist

    • Terence Silvestre Jr.

So is. In those cases of extreme defiance from the foolish Israel,
any firm and even spoken Russian response would always be welcomed.

    • Alex Black

The s400 can not be deployed like an umbrella, it is a large, expensive system with many crews and strategic implications. The correct Russian response will be a private warning, to Israel, followed by a destruction of an Israeli proxy, followed by deployment of Iranians Hezbollah on the border, followed by transfer of advanced weapon systems to Hezbollah. Direct hostilities with israel are not desirable. Another issue is the israeli purpose in their operation is to distract SAA from their objectives in the east, the faster these objectives are met, the quicker Israeli belligerence will end.

      • Terence Silvestre Jr.

Then lie the Russians to assert that their anti-aircraft system covers the entire Syrian sky and beyond that, my friend.
Even if it were not so, at least some firm verbal russian condemnation could be more than enough instead of nothing, I think.
On the other hand, you have all the reason in your explanation of why the cowardly attacks of Israel.
Mere attempts to distract the government forces from its successful anti-terrorism campaign that does not benefit the evil plans of Israel for the area. Good analysis.

        • Alex Black

The capabilities of the system as well as maps of syria are available to a certain extent in the public sphere, you can look them up yourself. There are other more practical constraints on deploying major weapon systems that would render israeli air force useless. It would likely lead to a strong military response and open syria to a third front, possible air strikes while the system is being deployed. This is not a fight that makes sense for the SAA at this time.

          • Terence Silvestre Jr.

You may be right about some Russian bellicose response to Israel, my friend.
But a verbal condemnation, to anyone it could not be denied.
Because we are supposed to live in an era of freedom of expression and a firm and formal public Russian verbal condemnation against the evil Israeli act should not be the exception, I think.

          • Alex Black

Yes but in the real world public statements have implications. When the amateur macron said syria will not cross lines, or else, there was a chemical attack next morning. If Russia issues a statement, publicly to israel, they will be forced to escalate if israel continues bombing, to avoid being mocked all over the world. Public statements are best not made, without willingness to do a knock out punch.

          • Terence Silvestre Jr.

As I already mention, knowing the Russian patience and inactivity bordering almost to cowardice, before other events even more aggressive against its ally in Syria, is less than likely to ever engage with Israel for good or ill in defense of the sirian government .
Let’s be more logical and realistic please.

          • Alex Black

That is your interpretation of events, and as I mentioned earlier this is why we do not speak, I consider your analysis simplistic, to the point where you see two possible moves, the bomb or the “cowardly way.” I am glad people running Russia, a nuclear power, have more common sense than this.

          • Terence Silvestre Jr.

Sometimes simpler is the smartest, reasonable and logical way of seeing reality, as opposed to your most complex, exaggerated and your peculiar style of always seeing and interpreting the obvious and easy to understand things,
            my dear friend.
Nice to meet you here again Alex.

        • gustavo

Well, there must by already 100 pages of many condemnations made by Russia, and there are many red lines already traced in Syria. Both of them are useless, and Russia knows it. But, make you believe that they are doing something.

      • Lupulescu Claudiu

        well said sir!
But then why Russia is so silenced about this issues? They are so affraid of Israel and Mossad!? mby yes..
they need at least to make an statement and warn Israel officialy to stop those atacks
and im aware of the cost of S400 and its a large system but if nothing work this will be like the last action..

        • Terence Silvestre Jr.

Yes sir. Very logical your comment, my friend.

        • Alex Black

Official statement to israel would put Russia in a situation where they have to respond. Russia doesnt like to be cornered. Israeli is being a pest, trying to tie up SAA with Israeli soldiers. Any operation against israel would lead to slow down of operations in the east, and would be a win for israel.

          • Terence Silvestre Jr.

I do not believe that any Russian spoken condemnation cause some hostile reaction my friend.
Israel is a shameless accustomed to all kinds of scolding at the international level for all their sins and I doubt one more from Russia could cause any Israeli reaction more than the usual in these cases.
Also, any sentence spoken Russian would only be for moral support of his Sirian ally more than anything else, already knowing how Russian acts in such cases, I’m afraid.

          • Alex Black

No, I am saying if Russia makes a public statement, and israel continues bombing, they would be pressured to escalate.

          • Terence Silvestre Jr.

I do not believe that my friend, because in any conflagracion and escalade situation, Israel like all the others will also have much to lose,
and with more reason with all its population being concentrated in such a compact area and they are not so imbeciles with so many enemies wanting and looking for any pretext to contribuite to the entire extermination of the state of Israel.

          • Alex Black

Israel is bluffing, but calling their bluff will be expensive, as it will cause SAA to transfer reinforcements, from other sections of the front, in order to call such a bluff. Thus that would in itself be a catastrophic loss for Syria. This is a lose lose, it is a losing proposition to do nothing, it is a losing proposition to do something public, so russian is acting in the background, the middle way.

          • Terence Silvestre Jr.

            I think you’re right, Alex.
Because it is also curious that just now Israel begins with these actions amid so many successes of the Syrian government in its survival war, along with his Russian ally and others.

          • Attrition47

I agree, the zionist provocations are the same as the US ones, attempts to divert the Syrians who, as the world can see, are winning. The zionist filth deserve a good kicking but that’s another war.

          • Solomon Krupacek

and 1 5 millions big country can make the pace for biiigooo russia??????

          • Fiutek

Israel has nothing to lose. It is turning into Mizrahistan and there is nothing that would stop a natural process of entropy. Israel can only delay the process while looking for an alternative. Birobidzhan may not be a bad choice

          • Terence Silvestre Jr.

Of course Israel has a lot to lose and more than all the other players in a possible escalation in the area, unless Israeli citizens and soldiers are immortal.
The Israeli population concentrated in very little territory is less than 10 percent of some of its strongest enemy neighbors and without mentioning the Russian military weapons and military technology support they would have.
Israel’s best aviation would never cope with so many objectives on the ground.
That was more than confirmed in his last little war with Hizballah.
So I would not be as optimistic as you my friend in the fate of Israel in a regional war, much less if Russia is involved.

        • More
        • Concrete Mike

Escalating the situation would open another front for the SAA, that is most undesirable, thats why they dont respond. Simple as that.

      • dutchnational

Israel and Russia earlier made a deal that Russia is keeping Hezbollah away from the Golan.

Deployment of Hezbollah on the Syrian Golan border, an area where there are no shia living, can only be seen as an imminent attack on Israel. As Hezbollanh is internationally designated as a terrorist group, per international law Israel can lawfully attack any Hezbollah forces near its borders and it will.

        • Alex Black

You failed reading comprehension, and i promised before I would not waste my time dealing with your strawmen arguments. I said Russia has many way of putting screws to israel that do not involve taking down their planes, or s400 or stern public statements. This was my point. Israel will have a difficult time complaining about agreements, while occupying syrian golan, supporting HTS terrorists and bombing sovereign syria on shoddy grounds.

The fact is, Israel annexed the Golan formally in 1981. Just like Russia annexed Crimea unilaterally.

          • Alex Black

Not true, Crimea was annexed as a result of a collapse of a state by the vote of its people, golan was stolen through armed force, no similarity.

          • Strange that anyone would see them as equivalent unless they have been drinking too much of the koolaid.

          • Terence Silvestre Jr.

Thank Alex, I feel better with your clarification, even though I still have some doubts, but in much less quantity, my friend in comparing those two facts.
I will have no option but to go further into the Crimea case, by my own means.

          • Solomon Krupacek

no lyar, in crimea there were 2 plebiscits, the first in 1992. already in that time 90% was against kiew.

IF in golan hight the aradms and druzes in plebiscit decide for israel, it is OK.

          • Alex Black

Even then it would not be OK, as the sovereign, constitutional nation of Syria never collapsed. The Ukrainian coup which was unconstitutional caused the destruction of Ukraine as a legal entity. The coup government has no legitimacy, and can not claim the lands of the old Ukraine by the mere virtue of its name. This is what legitimizes the right of the crimean people to self determine under the right to self determination, similarly to the Kosovo argument.

          • Wahid Algiers

The Crimea ever was russian, long before nowadays. In 1954 Chruschtschow, the leader of the communist soviet party in Ukraina until Stalin’ s death and since 1953 the leader of the Soviet Union, gave the administration to Ukraina. That states no property to them. Is logical, isn’ t it?

          • Terence Silvestre Jr.

Even though it pains me to recognize it for being a lover of Russia, I have no choice but to accept that you have so much reason in your comment, my friend.

          • dutchnational

If they (Hwzbollah) are, the more reason for both Russia and Syria to keep them away.

        • Solomon Krupacek

NO, ACCORDING TO INTERNATIONAL LAW GOLAN BELONGS TO SYRIA. SO, THE IL HA S NO RIGHT TO BE IN GOLAN :P

Read the Lavrov article, the US led “Terror Axis” have been supporting the Terrorists from the beginning, since 2010 in Syria.

Putin’s policy is do nothing or wait and see, this style has made US$Trillions as the Oil Price steadily climbed after Afghanistan 2001, Iraq 2003, Libya 2011 / Wars / Conflicts and Chaos.

The Saudi’s changed the game plan and caused the oil price to plummet.

US all out attack on Syria is at the War Drum beating stage.

Putin will decide his move which is usually do nothing after he meets Trump at the G20.

          • Tuskeegee

“Wait and see”…while the Russian Air Force has flown 1000’s of more missions than the U.S. and has turned the tide of battle on the ground.

“Syria will remain in chaos”…Only if the Fake Jews in Israel and Globalists get their way. They would love to see israeli headchopping takfiris running Syria. But Putin The Great appears committed to assisting the brave SAA to final victory.

“Oil Price steadily climbed after Afghanistan 2001, Iraq 2003, Libya 2011 / Wars / Conflicts and Chaos.” Again…helps Russia if oil prices rise.

“Putin will decide his move which is usually do nothing after he meets Trump at the G20.” Do nothing again? Yah like after he did nothing when the US/Turkey shot down the Russian airplane in an attempt to widen the war. He sent additional S-300/Pantsir batteries and bolstered their armored vehicles. Sent in specialists to assist with rebuilding disabled vehicles and making them combat ready again. Sent in additional helicoptors and performed cruise missile strikes. Mine specialists and whole police brigades to look after liberated cities and free up the SAA troops. SMART!

      • EL ZORRO

The correct Russian response will be to provide the Syrian Government with TACTICAL NUCLEAR WEAPONS and obliterate the ISRAHEEL MILITARY, ISRAHEEL impunity has to STOP AND pay FOR THE CONSEQUENCE of their actions, THEY ARE INTERNATIONAL MERCENARY TERRORISTS AIR-FORCE.

No we dont want ww3, at all costs, Russia suffered the Most from thé other world wars, and they remember thé bitter Lessons they learned, why would they not Do their most to not start another one? Over what, an airstrike here or There.

Its baloney, let Israël throw their temper tantrums, they Will be dealt with later.

        • You are thinking in old style military terms and we are in a new space where energy weapons have changed the landscape. Israel happens to be one nation armed with energy weapons and, on that basis, gets a level of respect from Russia. Kind of like not irritating a rattle snake. Israel has shown before how ruthless is her revenge while staying under the radar. See discussion on Fukushima.

        • Dimosthenis Cochliaridis

          Good for YOU my friend.
Mr Ahmadinejad has already said 12 years agao, only one small magic weopon will end all those old conflict and wars.

            you?

      • Ma_Laoshi

Moving Hezbollah closer to Israel’s borders (except the Lebanese one where Hezbollah has some legitimacy, it being their country and all that) is only sowing the seeds for long-term conflict; let’s not talk as if the Hezbies are boy scouts. By hitting hard in Ilovaysk *and stopping there*, the Kremlin got their point across in the Donbass war without becoming who Europe feared them to be. Israel has real security concerns whatever other people think of them.

I find it optimistic to think you’ll beat the Jews with 11D chess and Talmudism. They whack your guys, you whack them right back–proportionally but swiftly. That way you address them in their mother language, and believe me they WILL understand.

But yes the real question is “what can Putin do given that he doesn’t want to do anything”. I don’t think the issue consumes the IAF as much as people here.

        • Alex Black

I gave a theoretical list that is non-exclusive. There are a million different ways to hurt Israel, but I agree with you this is not the goal. The strategy is proportional yet asymmetric response. Despite the undesirable loss of life, Israel is not inflicting serious casualties, and the HTS is getting massacred despite the help from the Israeli air force. However, this action and other like it are why Israelis will have no peace.

          • Ma_Laoshi

A point, made by others long before, is that this kosher chest-beating may be mainly for their domestic audience. I’m just worried that, depending on how you count, a 3rd or 4th no-go zone for the SAA is going up in front of our noses. As they say in chess: it’s not about the move but about the follow-up; we’ll see.

          • Dimosthenis Cochliaridis

I have read many of ur “comment” in the last few days and i realized that you are a zioNazi criminal hypocrite or perhaps “”anybody”” who is brainwashed by western-media propaganda.

The S-400 is already in Syria:

BBC:Russia S-400 Syria missile deployment sends robust signal
        By Jonathan Marcus
        BBC Defence correspondent
        1 December 2015
        From the section Europe

The shooting down of a Russian Su-24 warplane by Turkish fighters has prompted Moscow to reinforce its contingent in Syria.
Russian warplanes have now been seen carrying air-to-air missiles and a Russian warship – the Moskva – was moved closer to the Syrian coast, to enable its air defence missiles to provide additional cover over the Russian air base near Latakia.
But the most significant reinforcement has been the deployment of a sophisticated S-400 air defence system. Its large tubular launchers and associated radar and command vehicles are now in position at the Russian base.

        • Alex Black

All of that is irrelevant information. The S-400 in Syria is defending Russian assets in the northeast. The attacks on southwest Syria, while technically in the range of the S-400 would require Russia to shoot down Israeli aircraft by firing rockets that would have to travel over Syria and probably Lebanon to strike Israeli jets over Israel. This is not an effective way to use the S400 system, at the outer limits of its range. The system would have to be deployed in Damascus to be effective against Israeli jets, and this would likely have to be transferred to the Syrian military as Russians do not have a strong track record for firing on Israeli planes. The crews would have to be Syrian, possibly with a few Russian instructors. So I am not sure how your analysis changes the bottom line of a response to the question of why the S400 transfer to Syria and deployment in the south is problematic.

    • Dustil schmit

Seeking confrontation always works out at the end right?

      • Lupulescu Claudiu

But they need to protect somehow SAA . This is all what im saying

        • Dustil schmit

If Jordan had a backbone and tried for Darra city Russia might of force SAA to withdraw for agreements not to go any further like the Turks and keep terrorists out.

    • Real Anti-Racist Action

The problem is that Jews do not fear ethnic-Russians at all.
After the Jews fought the war against the White-Russians, and the Russians lost to Jewish-Bolshevism. Jews feel they can take on and defeat Russians again any day ha ha.
And so far this fact has always proven true.

I have read most of the comments below. There are good arguments both for and against a Russian escalation.
But, how about an “asymmetrical” response? How about if Russia could secretly supply both the Taliban and ISIS, over in Afghanistan, with large amounts of shoulder fired man-pad ground to air rockets. Keep in mind that Israel has already supplied these to Syrian rebels.

And then when Trump and Putin meet next week, a Russian aide will whisper in a US aide’s ear ….. “too bad you got into that quagmire over in Afghanistan for the last 16 years ….. too bad you’re going to be there for another 15 years ! “

They could do that indeed. In five years IS will start to show in Russian Islamic lands and those are vast in the Caucasus and east of the Ural. That will make Russia very happy.

  • gustavo

Russia already said that he will do nothing against USA-NATO-Israel, of course, Russia put an orange line saying that saying “from this part of the river, you will observed and maybe we will stop you.” Russia will not use S-300 and S-400 against any USA-NATO-Israel plane since the equipment is there just to protect russian stuff. Israel is just reacting to the fact the Syria-Iran-Hezbollah-Russia is destroying its little terrorists angles (ISIS-Daesh-FSA and Co.)

  • Geys Home

Alex Black are you stupid or yes???? The S 400 Early warning/acquisition radar has a range of more than 600 KM!!!!!!(against 4th gen fighters and bombers whichdion’t use special paints to reduce RCS (radar cross section)

RUssians SEE AND KNOW everything that happens around them in at least 650-700 KILOMETER radius. The question is WHY THE ZIO-JIHADIST WARPLANES ARE NOT BEING TARGETED BU RUSSIAN S 400 OR SYRUAN S 300??? Why????? SHOOT THE FUCK DOWN THE ZIONIST SHITS ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!! OR GIVE HEZBOLLA VERBA MANPADS AND BUK MEDIUM RANGE SYSTEMS AND THEY WILL DEAL WITH IT!!!!

    • Abe Manhattan

The Israeli’s can fire into Syria from Israel territory. No time for the Russians to respond. Besides, if the Russians attack Israel planes, Israel will retaliate.
