On January 19, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that its fighters have repelled a large attack by ISIS on their positions in the village of al-Bahrah located between the towns of Gharanij and Hajin in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside. According to the SDF, ISIS was trying to open a route in order to evacuate its fighters trapped in Gharanij.
The SDF’s media center said that the SDF fighters killed 51 ISIS fighters while repelling the attack on al-Bahrah. Moreover, two VBIEDs, two vehicles armored with 12.7mm guns and an armored vehicle of ISIS were reportedly destroyed by the SDF.
Meanwhile, the US-led coalition announced that its warplanes carried out 59 airstrikes against ISIS in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside between January 12 and 18. The US-led coalition airstrikes destroyed several headquarters, ammo depots and drone workshops of the terrorist group.
From its side, the ISIS linked news agency Amaq announced that ISIS fighters attacked two positions of the US-backed force in al-Baghuz in southeastern Deir Ezzor. ISIS fighters destroyed two positions and killed 12 fighters of the SDF during the attack, according to Amaq.
Two other positions of the SDF in al-Shaafah were also attacked by ISIS fighters. The ISIS-linked news agency claimed that ISIS fighters killed 11 members of the SDF and captured several weapons during the attack.
The US-backed force appears to be stuck in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside as it couldn’t capture Hajin town or even fully secure Gharanij.
