On Sunday, the Syrian authorities foiled a suicide attack in Baniyas city north of Tartus city, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). The source said that the Syrian Police was able to ambush a suicide bomber who tried to target an unspecified civilian neighborhood inside the city.
SANA said that the terrorist blew himself up after Syrian policemen cornered him in al-Basiyah area outside of Baniyas city. The explosion cause no material or human loses what so ever according to the source.
An official source of the Syrian police department in Tartus told SANA that the Syrian authorities knew about the attack attempt in advance. The official source added that the Syrian authorities was able to foil the attack after “intensifying its security procedures and inspection on the entrances of Baniyas city”.
Meanwhile, local sources from Tartus city said that the Syrian Intelligence and Police is conducting a search operation inside the city.Other suicide bomber might be on the run inside Tartus according to the sources.
The foiled attack was likely planned by ISIS. However, the terrorist group didn’t claim responsibility for it so far. Back on 23 May 2016, 184 civilians were killed in Tartus and Jableh coastal cities in a series of suicide attacks of ISIS that targeted bus stations and even hospitals.
