On September 18, three militants of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) were killed when the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) shelled the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.

The militants were manning a position in the outskirts of the town of al-Atarib, one of HTS’s few remaining strongholds in the western Aleppo countryside.

Two of the slain militants were reportedly minors. They were identified as Abu Abdo Basartun and Abu Ubaida al-Tah. Both of them were reportedly serving in the ranks of the Umar ibn al-khattab Brigade, a key unit of HTS military wing. The terrorist group recruited them when they were still young children.

A day earlier, a series of Russian airstrikes hit key positions of HTS near the towns of Hafsarjah and Sheikh Yusuf in the western countryside of Idlib.

The strikes on Greater Idlib were meant as a punishment for HTS, who violated the ceasefire in the region on several occasions in the last few days. On September 16, a Syrian officer was shot and killed by a sniper of the terrorist group on the region’s southern frontline.

The SAA and its allies appear to be determined to enforce the ceasefire agreement, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago. HTS’s repeated attempts to undermine the agreement are not being tolerate as much as before.
