On November 23, the Ministry of Defense of Russia announced that the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Tiger Forces recaptured the town of al-Quriyah located south of the city of Mayadin from ISIS in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside. The SAA attack on the al-Quriyah was supported by the Russian Aerospace Forces.
“As part of the planned offensive operation led by Russian military advisers, the Syrian forces’ units under command of General Sukhel fully liberated from the ISIL [ISIS] terrorists the village of al-Quriyah within 24 hours. The Syrian army’s units under command of General Sukhel backed by the Russian Aerospace Forces are pursuing and destroying terrorist groups in the Euphrates valley and are carrying out the offensive along its western bank,” the Russian Dense Ministry said, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
Previously, the SAA entered al-Quriyah town on October 22. However, it withdrew from it few hours later after a successful counter attack of ISIS.
The Russian Defense Ministry also told reporters that the SAA and the Tiger Forces supported by the Russian air power are about to capture the entire western bank of the Euphrates River.
“The western bank of the Euphrates River will be soon fully liberated by the government forces under the command of the legendary Syrian General Sukhel, what will allow to complete the operation to destroy the remaining ISIL [ISIS] in eastern Syria,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.
Local sources, and the pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) confirmed that the SAA captured al-Quriyah. According to SOHR, the SAA now controls 52% of Deir Ezzor governorate.
