The Syrian military eliminated a multiple rocket launcher system, which had been used by militants to shell a bus station in the Syrian city of Latakia, head of the Russian Center for reconciliation of the conflicting sides Viktor Kupchishin told media.
“On April 25, militants occupying positions in the mountainous area of the Latakia province attempted to shell a bus station in the city of Latakia from a multiple rocket launcher system. The Syrian armed forces used artillery to destroy the weaponry belonging to illegal armed groups,” Kupchishin stated.
The rocket shelling on Latakia on April 25 injured at least four civilians, including a woman and her child. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, pro-opposition sources said that the attack was conducted by the Ahrar al-Sham Movement, which is a part of the Turkish-backed militant alliance known as the National Front for Liberation.
Another important fact is that the attack took place amid the new round the Astana format tallks. The Kazakh capital was recently renamed to Nur-Sultan, but the media still calls the talks as the “Astana format”. The talks involved representatives of Russian, Turkey, Iran, the Syrian government and the so-called “opposition”.
The attack on Latakia may be described as another signal that the peace process has stalled.
