The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has deployed reinforcements along a key highway in the eastern countryside of Hama, pro-government sources reported on March 12.

The highway, which passes through the town of Ithriyah, links Hama in central Syria with Raqqa in the northeast and Aleppo in the northern region. During the war, the highway became one of the main shipping routes in Syria.

According to pro-government sources, the SAA reinforcements will help to secure and protect the vital Ithriyah highway from ISIS cells.

Recently, ISIS cells intensified their attacks in the Hama-Aleppo-Raqqa triangle, especially in eastern Hama. Earlier this week, the terrorists targeted a battle tank of the SAA near the town of al-Salamiyah in the region.

Aside from securing the Ithriyah highway, the newly-deployed reinforcements may also take part in the army’s ongoing combing operations in eastern Hama.

The Russian Aerospace Forces have been supporting the ongoing operations against ISIS in the Hama-Aleppo-Raqqa triangle and other parts of central Syria. In the last few days, Russian warplanes carried out over 200 airstrikes on the region. More than 40 terrorists were eliminated.
