Syrian Air Force Receives ‘Advanced’ Mig-29 Fighter Jets From Russia

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) announced on May 30 that the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) had received a new batch of Mig-29 fighter jets from Russia.

A military source told the state-run agency that the new fighter jets were handed over to the SyAAF during an official ceremony in the Russian Hmeimim Air Base in southern Lattakia. The source said the fighter jets were “advanced” and “upgraded.”

“These warplanes, which are more effective than their previous generation, flew from the Hmeimim Air Base to their deployment areas in Syrian air bases,” the source said.

According to the source, the new Mig-29s will enter service with the SyAAF on June 1. The fighter jets will patrol Syria’s airspace.

The military source didn’t provide the exact number of Mig-29s which were delivered to the SyAAF or share any details on their specifications.

Recently, a number of Mig-29 fighter jets were spotted in the Hmeimim Air Base. While the U.S. claimed that they were later deployed in Libya, they could be the ones handed over to the SyAAF.

At least 20 Mig-29s were in service with the SyAAF prior to the new delivery. The Syrian jets were upgraded to special standard, known as SM. This allowed them to fire beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles (BVRAAMs) and precision-guided air-to-surface munitions. Furthermore, the Mig-29SMs were equipped with active jamming systems.

The military source claimed that the newly delivered Mig-29s are more advanced than the ones which were in service with the SyAAF, which mean they could be Mig-29SMTs or Mig-29Ms.

The new Mig-29s will boost the capabilities of the SyAAF, which failed to impose a no-fly zone over the northwestern region of Greater Idlib during the last confrontation with Turkey.

The delivery of these fighter jets is an example of the ever growing partnership between Syria and Russia. A day earlier, Moscow announced that it will initiate talks with Damascus to secure new bases for its troops on the Syrian coast.

    How much is a batch?

    • gryzor84

Probably a squadron worth, of half. (12 to 24). The day discussions about Mig-31s resurface will be when I’ll start truly believing Russia actually cars about the SyAAF’s ability at independent operations and self-defense without Russian involvment. This is a good start nonetheless.

      • Kamīrusan

But that is impossible, They no longer have those in production so giving any of them away is a bad decision, the day will come though when Russia replaces them with the Mig-41, i can see Russia giving/selling some away to Syria and Iran but that’s 20 years away at minimum.

        • JIMI JAMES

No longer in production? Source plz!
serious aircrafts proven in active service may be remanufactured if need be,like usa =boeings!

          • Kamīrusan

It’s a very capable Aircraft, but Russia heavily favors replacing them with Mig-41 over restarting Mig-31 Production.

        • gryzor84

Really ? I thought a part of them were actually considered strategic reserves, bar the ones they fully upgraded in the ASAT and Anti-AWACS role with super-long range AAMs. Yeltsin’s dark Russian ages also came with significant sales of this interceptor to Iran in the early 90s, but US pressure + Iran’s fragile post-war economy ultimately led to the package’s cancellation along with a few Tu-22s as well. Quite a pity but those times will soon truly be a thing of the past if Moscow delivers on the Su-30/Mig-35 deals that aviation-related publications have kept telling us about lately. This and the J-10 coming into the mix (which probably is merely a commercial bargain that Tehran is waving in the Kremlin’s direction, rather than actual plans to get those).

Considering their overt and vocal oppposition to a ludicrous US request to an UN Arms Embargo extension just like China does, and further aggravated by a growing assertiveness of the US in Russia and China’s historical backyard (the Arctic, Ukraine , HK and Taiwan) I would be betting that bets are off on the traditional sales restraints with the two powers. (and no pun intended :) )

    • Lone Ranger

      Around $25million per jet

  • Cromwell

Now start using them to incinerate the Turks and their jihadi boyfriends.

  • <>

Are we going to see dog fights between the IAF and the SyAF soon?

    • Luigi

Probably not. I think those upgraded MIG-29 will be used to hunt the Turkish UAVs, to safely and precisely bomb terrorists in Idlib and to protect SyAAF against the Turkish Air Force F16 C/D. That is a escalation of the conflict and I believe that this is a reponse to Erdogan’s adventures in Lybia.

      • namulit emperor

I concur. They probably and hopefully have better defenses against AA missiles and capability to engage in longer range with other aircraft, the F-16, which is crucial.
I do wonder if the SAAF will get the S34 without markings, too…
EDIT: Disregard my last sentence. The photos of the Su24 and Su34 without the red star on livemap are old ones from 2016 and un-related.

        • Harry Smith

Liveuamap is Ukrainian project so they are full of lies and BS. They made it in contra weight of mulitarymaps.org in desperate try to stop in Internet the DPR/LPR offense.

    • Harry Smith

If IDF pilots would be stupid enough to enter Syrian air space it is quite possible to be a fight between MiG-29 and F-35. But you have to understand that MiGs will work as integral part of anti air system and their missiles will be guided by S-400 radars. That means no stealth.

      • ruca

        Yeap!

      • Don Bart

Uhm,Israelis would have them for breakfast

        • Harry Smith

Looks like IDF pilots are missing breakfast for couple of years until now.

          • Don Bart

Cuz Syrians don’t fly them down south…otherwise they’d end up like everything else in history of their air to air skirmishes. Nowdays even Turks chip in an amraam shot …or two :)

          • Concrete Mike

What your point, Israel doesnt fly into Syria either, it hides behind cvilian airliners in Lebanon.

Syrians fly their planes in Syria, it is you the crusading invaders.

          • <>

Make no mistakes, we are still officially at war with Syria and if it comes to any escalation then their entire airforce will be wiped out.

          • Harry Smith

Yep. The question is which Air Force. ;)

          • Harry Smith

Why then your almighty air force didn’t wiped out SyAAF until now If you are still officially at war with Syria?

          • <>

We are at a state of war, that doesn’t mean we are in a war. Same between the Koreas, but a small incident can cause a big escalation. Iran’s job in Southern Syria is to make sure it happens, I hope Assad will use the SAA wisely and stop the cooperation.

          • Harry Smith

Not Assad but Hezbollah you must be scared of.

          • <>

I’m not scared at all, and we will meet again with them maybe even in July after we annex the Jordan Valley, that is if they start anything. Just one thing, no U/N ceasefires please, they can use all their rockets and we will use all of our firepower, let’s see who shall remain.

        • JIMI JAMES

You obviously don’t know what the fk your on about, however they are not fast enough nor have the missiles anywhere near enough the speed to rival russias,
you dementy kweers simply have not got what it takes other than utilise cowardly hits or beg russia to understand the serious situation in si much as where the source of the provocations stem from, and we ought know there are deep state players whom try to make the f35 seem invincible, however russia and germany allready firgured out these are just another scam fuckfests of cia’s=too fragile!

      • <>

And the S400 would be destroyed, along with those MiGs.

        • Lone Ranger

          Unlikely.

        • JIMI JAMES

You don’t know the fundamentals of terminal velocity, stick to ye tricycle idiot!

    • SnowCatzor

IAF pilots mostly just fire (mostly ineffective) long-range missiles from Israel these days. They don’t come close enough for fights.

      • Zionism = EVIL

Even that is proving difficult for the Zionist cowardly cunts as the SAA shot down 80% of the missiles 6 weeks ago and captured 5 Delilah ARM missiles intact which were transported to Iran for examination and closing. The Jew cowardly cunts hit three homes and killed a couple a kids wasting millions of dead beat Americunt taxpayers dollars.

        • alejandro casalegno

          Five Delilah captured???………..is true??

      • <>

That is because of our agreement with Russia, not because we can’t do it.

    • Wayne Nicholson

I would imagine they will be supporting the Syrian army in combined arms action. IDF attacks are just a nuisance. Discipline is the key …. they have to stay focused and on task …. ignore Israel, ignore the USA focus on taking back territory and getting the economy running again.

Time isn’t israel’s or the USA’s friend …. the bankruptcies will start later this summer and the depression starts to REALLY bite in about 14 months. The whole mood of the Trump administration reeks of desperation … even with all the premature openings Americans aren’t spending money. They’re trying to put on a brave face but they’re barely holding it together.

    • LR captain

the SAA getting new equipment meh not really something that should concern you.
what should concern you it Egypt getting new equipment IN BULK and planning massive retraining program for 6 months.

Remember the Last time Egypt took time and rebuilt its army for 4 years things kind of got hairy for the IDF. (but thanks to the Syrian officer core’s stupidity the IDF managed to get a Mexican stand off. with 23,000 IDF outside Egypt’s capital while Egypt main force was still beating the snot out the IDF near Israel’s heartland.)

    • Jimmy Jim

GAS THE KIKE DOGS WITHOUT A FIGHT!

  • Ivan Freely

    About time.

  • alejandro casalegno

The most important thing………….the MiGs come with BETTER trained pilots?????????????

    • paolinks

Syrian pilots have already used Mig-29 for years.

      • alejandro casalegno

The Migs come to fight the turkish F-16………the syrian air combat record is between bad and pathetic……

        • gryzor84

they never did. Israeli then cutting-edge F-16 only went against under-powered, under-armed and under-equipped Mig-23 export Soviet samples, along with even older and less capable Mig-21. They never went toe to toe to Mig-29s upgraded to an equivalent standard. The situation in the 80s was so bad that Israeli F-16s wouldn’t even have to get in Mig-23 detection range to fire their AAMS and get away, the Syrians had to complain to Moscow after the debacle of Operation Cricket Mole to finally obtain the due upgrades fo their entire fleet doubled with the first Mig-29 squadron, but it was too late, as usual. The only engagement that occured between IDF F-16s and SyAAF Mig-29s were right after the 9/11 attacks, when the Israeli side spontaneously decided to veer off their usual patrol course upon detecting the Migs doing their own CAP and took them down totally by surprise. Of course, with Assad in charge, nobody ever retaliated for that, just like the 2007 strike on the nuclear facilities. I won’t count the pinprick, provocation attacks starting post-2011 since Syria is by no means in shape to combat a USA-supported Israel while internal turmoil is still ongoing.

          • alejandro casalegno

Is beyond the weapons quality……….in the 60-70´s, israel have Mirage and Phantoms, the arabs have MiG-17 and 21, like the vietnamese, and they were a lot better than arabs in combat!!!
The almost unknown air combat post 9/11 (Good for you) ended with four MiG-29 shot downs………..give today the Su.35 to the SAF against the IAF F-15, will end the same……………

          • gryzor84

It was briefly mentioned on some wiki page to be honest a while back , I got lucky I suppose :D

But I thought it was a pair of Mig-29s post 9/11, which were not even remotely enjoying the same level of modernity than their fully upgraded and armed F-16Is at the time (namely STILL lacking BVR missiles, while the IAF planes attacked using SIGINT and AWACS at its fullest). Again the tech gap between the IAF and the SyAAF in almost every engagement is abysmal and the latter always lack key assets to even the tide and that long before we can even get to the point where their piloting skills start having an effect.

The Kippur War was the single instance where the odds were a bit even and both Egyptian and Syrian pilots constantly defeated Israeli formation at their own game and prevented them from operating freely until the final ceasefire. The battle of Al-Mansourah on the Egyptian side is testimony to this. The same is true but numerous A4s and F4s blown out of the sky in border skirmished with the SyAAF using their best Mig-23s, so we see examples here and there of Syrian pilots performing correctly when equipped to have a decent chance. But granted, their training regimen, protocols, and doctrine has proven to be an aggravating factor in comparison to what the Israeli cadets enjoy.

          • alejandro casalegno

Yes…….sometimes were good prefomance, but not real victories, , only “Glorious defeats”, the main Arab-israel wars were in the 1948-1973 years, the Vietnam war was 1945-1975, the vietnamese defeated France and USA……the arabs confront Israel and USA……..today the main arab countries are servants of USA

One big diference…..Hezbollah………but it is another history….

          • gryzor84

Put this way, I’d tend to agree indeed. The 73 war was one good sample of stud because it really was the sole instance of Arab armies fighting Israel with about the same level of hardware performance and sophistication, and it showed greatly compared to all of the other conflicts where the IDF enjoyed formidable technological edge against their opponents.

Vietnamese pilots were quite the aces too, I agree here as well , quite hard to shine as much as they did against impossible odds lol, bar Hezbollah as a guerilla force that also did wonders in its time, let’s hope for the Lebanese that they still have what it takes to prevent yet another possible invasion from their neighbor seeking excuses for conflict on a permanent basis.

  • nyomarek

    Good to hear!

  • Sencer

Are they as advanced as Pantsirs ? I am asking this because …

    • ruca

You cannot compare the two. One is a fighter jet and the other is an air defense system.

      • Fog of War

You didnt understand did you ?

Is this the same Fog of Brain that’s always posting idiotic comments on SyrPer?

But both shoot in the air with same bombing missiles. Now what’s the point.Like one is USA soldier and the other is ISIS same shit.

    • Dick Von Dast’Ard

      Which Pantsir?
Pantsir-S1/S1M, Pantsir-S2/S2E or Pantsir-SM .. I am asking this because you don’t appear to know?
Syria operates the earliest ones. Russia operates the most modern and capable ones.

      A F-16 C (Block 25) for example, is a considerable less capable platform than say a F-16 V.

      • Sencer

I am asking about the ones destroyed in Syria and Libya to be more precise.

        • Tudor Miron

Are you asking about that video game footage posted by Turkish “media forces” or about those remnants of Turkish drones filmed in Syria and Libia?

        • namulit emperor

War is dangerous and losses are inevitable, be it by accident or enemy. To think that no AA system could ever be defeated or a drone shot down is just dumb. And no army makes public accurate statistics of their losses.

        • Lone Ranger

          According to mossadisis news…

          • Sencer

Why ? Israeli planes are bombing Iranian militia daily over Syria and Iraq. How many Israeli jets downed so far ? What is the statistical success rate of Russia Air defence systems , 0,01% ? 0,02 % ?

          • Lone Ranger

Russian air defense never fired on Israeli jets.
            Its a mutual agreement.
Israel wont fire on Russian troops in return Russian wont fire on Israeli jets.

          • alejandro casalegno

IAF planes launch the missiles from Israel, Jordan and Lebanon…..is a smart move,

    • Tudor Miron

Sencer, are you the one believing in NATO led compaign to degrade Pantsir S image or one who’s acrtively participating in that compaign?

      • Concrete Mike

He is definitly part of Turkey’s campaign. I have been observing him for a while, he is definitly on the pro turkey/hts shitlist.

    • Lone Ranger

Because of shot down Israeli jets…

      • <>

Only one jet, and we all remember how Damescus cried to Russia to stop the IDF retaliations back in 2018, after we destroyed dozens of targets inside Syria.

        • Lone Ranger

          2 jets.
Dont forget that Flop-35 totalled by a “Pigeon”.
Still what Israel is doing is counterproductive.
Iran gained more power in the region in the past 10 years.
          Why?
Because of the actions of the CIA and Mossad.
Ever thought about who is using whom?
          Think about it a little.
The answer is not as obvious as most think.

      • Sencer

You are obsessed with jews. There is another life outside somewhere . Go and live it.

  • Fog of War

I hope no one gets too excited. The jets are just a small payment for the fact that Russia will have multiple bases in Syria permanently now., and going By Putin’s past record, he’ll allow them to be used against everyone but Turkey, Israhell, and ZioAmerica. Whats the point ?

    • omrizkiblog

I honestly disagree with you, because it is well known public secret that even small Russian presence in Syria is geopoliticaly & strategically dangerous for ISISrael, as well as for NATO (Turkey) & obviously for USA.

Since it means that ISISrael can’t do much to attack Damascus, let alone to dethrone Assad in the foreseeable years. Yes, ISISrael still attempts to make a fuss around Syria, but it is not that easy now. Its presence in Syrian soil helps to balance the power in mid-east, it warns Satanyahu not to doing anything stupid in Syria.

Yes, the size of troops or base might not look that big but it gives enough trouble for any attempts to destabilize Syria, especially by ISISrael & Turkey.

      • klove and light

are u drunk on drugs or plain stupid….

Israel by ist own account has attacked syria over 2700 times in the last 4 years….Damascus alone was attacked ober 40 times!!!!!.

and Turkey created havoc with ist artillery and drone strikes on SAA in the last confrontation

well thats some protection from Zionist Putin…lol-sarcasm out

you accused yet still yous cannot, where as the other must compromise in faith:

        • Concrete Mike

Drama queen, these zionist attacks acheive nothing, they are but mere mosquito bites.

The Turks on the other hand needs to be put in their place.

      • Fog of War

” I honestly disagree with you, because it is well known public secret that even small Russian presence in Syria is geopoliticaly & strategically dangerous for ISISrael, ”

Has Russia allowed Syria to attack Israhell ? To shutdown its jets ? To bomb its airports ? Why not ?

Has Russia retaliated when Israhell cause its AWACS jet to get blown out of the sky ? Why not ?

If Russia were ever to engage Israhell it would be WW3 as the ZioAmericans would step in immediately. Putin is afraid of the Jews just like anyone else, unless he already works for them. Russia’s entrance into Syria was just an operation to scavenge Syrian territory for
itself, before the other ” world powers ” could. The reminder of ” free Syria ” is now just a Russian vassal state. In fact, name me one free, autonomous, nation in all of human history that had foreign military bases on its territory. There’s your answer.

Your knowledge of airplanes is pathetic. An F35 will never shoot anything down but a civilian airliner.

Its slow heavy and handles like a mack truck, in case you didnt know, mack trucks have terrible power steering , so yeah, mig29 is the opposite, small , light ,nimble and fast.

Its doesnt take a genius to figure out F35 is terrible plane, even canada doesnt want it, because we know it sucks.

Nice one. Why do the US want President Assad out? How do regime change nations view the rioting in the US?

  • LaRata

Yes go SAF… CAP mission was urgent for the air defence of Syria…

  • Willing Conscience (The Truths

I think there’s more announcements to come, the reports that first told me the Russian were flying repainted jets to Syria also said there were more to come, there’s more SU -25’s and SU-34’s with painted over insignia, will they be gifted to Syria as well, hopefully they are.

    • namulit emperor

The photographs with the Su24 and S34 are old…

      • Willing Conscience (The Truths

I’ve only seen the one photo of one jet sitting on a runway, so I’m not sure if we’re referring to the same photo, I’m just hoping the second report is as accurate as the first one was, Assad really needs those jets.

        • namulit emperor

          I mean this ones:
          https://syria.liveuamap.com/en/2020/30-may-russian-su25-and-su34-in-syria-with-paintedover-signs
          Taken from here:
          https://aviadrive.ru/posts/273/
The Syrians never used their Mig29 they already have over Idlib, didn’t they? Do you know if this is accurate and when yes why?

          • Willing Conscience (The Truths

Yes you’re right, the image I’ve seen is exactly the same as one of those images from the 2016 article you linked, though that isn’t surprising, I wasn’t really expecting to see a real image of the actual jets, real photos may be hard to get.
They’re possibly just going on eyewitness accounts without the hard evidence to corroborate the story, but they were right the first time so fingers crossed they’re right this time too.

I can’t say for sure whether or not the M-29’s have been used in Idlib but I’m assuming they have been, perhaps they weren’t needed as much as the ground strike aircraft were, until the Turks became involved they haven’t really needed fighter jets for protection.
And since the Turks shot down 2 choppers and 3 aircraft earlier in the year the Syrian’s haven’t been flying anywhere near Idlib, just their drones are doing that, so no Syrian aircraft at all have been flying over or near Idlib since the 3rd of march.
But they have been attacking Isis in northern Homs with their aircraft though so they’re still active, but I don’t think they’d be using the Mig 29’s to do that.

Good call on the photo they used in the story, you obviously like to know more about a story than you’re being told, good work.

    • Mustafa Mehmet

gifted? putin wants damascus deeds nothing comes free…soon you gone hear republic of putin no more syria

      • Willing Conscience (The Truths

I think the right to host Russian bases may be the price Syria’s paid for the jets, so you’re right, it isn’t a gift, but a few acres of lands a lot cheaper than hundreds of millions of dollars. :]

  • Assad must stay

many thanks mister russia, will be great for intercepting zionist and torki f-16 :))))

        • alejandro casalegno

I support Syria……but in air combat the zionists wiped out the SAF from the air, i don`t like it…..but is the reality.

          • RichardD

Not if the IAF is destroyed on the ground. And in air to air combat modern Mig 29s with the right ordinance can be highly effective against the IAF in limited engagements.

The primary consideration is escalation management.

          • alejandro casalegno

A “Swarm” of SSM to IAF bases is the best Hezbollah-SAA option………..

  • RichardD

This is a much needed upgrade.

Syria had about 48 Mig 29 at the onset of Americunt sponsored headchopper terrorism. Now almost all have been upgraded to SMT standard and are back in operation.

There are Turk reports that they got a batch of 6 Mig 31s a couple of years ago.

I’d be very surprised if Syria doesn’t have underground facilities similar to Iran where Iran and Russia are helping them with a missile program that can hit anything in Israel at anytime. Which would make any Lebanon war type of conflict with Syria cost prohibitive. And make Hezbollah’s artillery rocket barrages minor in comparison.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:10 A.M.) – The Turkish military has allegedly deployed its long-range air defense system in the northwestern governorate of Idlib, the pro-opposition Aleppo Media Center claimed on Sunday.
According to the Aleppo Media Center, the Turkish military deployed its air defense system to Talat Al-Nabi Ayoub, which is the highest point in the Idlib Governorate.

No photos were released to corroborate the claim and no further information was reported about the alleged deployment of this air defense system.
The Turkish military has already deployed one of its air defense systems to Idlib; however, it is near administrative capital and it primarily a short-range system.
Turkey has repeatedly warned the Syrian military about launching any attacks in northwestern Syria and the presence of these air defense systems will likely deter any future airstrikes over the governorate.
However, at the same time, the Russian Air Force has recently intensified their flights over the Idlib and Aleppo governorates, as their warplanes were reported to have flown at both low and medium altitudes near the Turkish border.
The Russian Air Force reportedly conducted these flights after unknown assailants attacked a Turkish military convoy along the M-4 Highway (Aleppo-Latakia Highway) near the town of Al-Ghassaniyeh.
As a result of this attack, one Turkish soldier was killed and another was slightly wounded.

The MiG-29 come with one mission……….fight the turkish F-16!!!. The big question is…what “MiG-29” is, a S model, a SM or MiG-35, come with R-77??…….and better training??

Against the jihadists the Su-24 or Su-25 are better and cheaper.

I don’t think these planes are allow by Russia to shot down Israel planes.
