On Sunday, an official source from the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that the Syrian government welcomes the upcoming Syrian National Dialogue Congress, which will be held in the Russian city of Sochi soon, and confirmed that the Syrian Government has agreed to attend it.
“The Syrian Arab Republic government welcomes the National Dialogue Congress which will be held in Sochi, Russia, with the participation of many segments of Syrian society, affirming that the government has agreed to attend the Congress,” the source said, according to SANA.
The official revealed to the SANA that the National Dialogue Congress will include a committee to discuss the current Syrian constitution. Moreover, the official said that the same committee might hold a legislative election afterwards with the involvement of the UN.
According to this statement, the upcoming National Dialogue Congress could be more than just another round of talks between the Damascus government and the opposition. The statement suggests that a full political solution for the Syrian war may be agreed during the upcoming talks in the city of Sochi.
While Turkey, Iran and Russia are backing the National Dialogue Congress, the US and its Syrian allies (like the Syrian Democratic Forces) will not likely be a part of it. This means that any political solution that might be reached in Sochi will not be supported by the US. However, the rapidly changing reality on the ground in Syria may force the US to accept the results of the Sochi talks.
