On March 17, the Saudi-led coalition announced that it had foiled an attempt by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) to launch a drone attack on Saudi Arabia.

Coalition warplanes targeted a unit of the Houthis that was about to launch a Qasef-type suicide drone at the Kingdom from the central Yemeni province of ‘Amran. The coalition shared a video of the successful operation.

The Qasef family of suicide drones is derivative from the Iranian Ababil-2. Both copies of the drone, Qasef-1 and 2K, have a range of 150 km. The 2K is, however, equipped with a high-explosive fragmentation, HE-FRAG, warhead that explodes 20 m over the target.

“We deal with the sources of threats firmly to protect civilians from terrorist attacks,” the Saudi-led coalition said in a statement. “The military operation was carried out in accordance with international humanitarian law and its customary rules.”

This was the second time the Saudi-led coalition was able to foil a drone attack by the Houthis. The coalition foiled a similar attack on March 5.

The Houthis intensified their drone attacks on Saudi Arabia in the last few months. A day earlier, the air-defense forces of the Saudi-led coalition intercepted a suicide drone over the Kingdom’s southern city of Khamis Mushait.
