Russia's Mi-17Sh Storm Military Transport Helicopter

The Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant presented its Mi-171Sh Storm military transport helicopter and announced that it would enter mass production in 2022.

The Mi-171Sh Storm is, essentially, the export name of the Mi-8AMTSh model.

“The serial production of the modernized Mi-171Sh helicopter will begin in 2022,” Mikhail Karpushkin, a deputy head of the marketing, sales and maintenance department of the Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant told Tass during last week’s Army-2020 International Military and Technical Forum.

The Mi-171Sh is the latest updated version of the Mi-17, which entered service in the Soviet Red Army in the 1970s and which saw use as an armed gunship version.

The Mi-171Sh was introduced to the world market in 2002 and has been widely exported to clients in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe.

It is unique in that it was ordered even by NATO members – some of them were sold to Croatia, as well as the Czech Republic, between 2005 and 2008. “It is known that Russia exports its helicopters to almost any international buyer, including the United States,” the National Interest reported.

The Mi-171Sh can be deployed on a range of missions, including the airlifting of assault forces, transportation of cargoes, troop fire support, air-to-surface attack, escort of the military columns, medical evacuation and combat search and rescue (CSAR) operations.

In 2009, the Russian Ministry of Defense ordered the Mi-171Sh as part of the modernization programme of the Russian Armed Forces.

UUAP delivered the first batch of ten Mi-171AMTSh (Russian designation of Mi-171Sh) helicopters in December 2010. The second batch of helicopters was delivered in June 2011.

The Mi-171Sh was specifically designed for operating in combat missions in local armed conflicts. The design incorporates a five-bladed main rotor, a tail rotor and non-retractable tricycle nose-wheel landing gear.

The glassed-in cockpit accommodates three crew and cabin houses up to 36 troops, or up to 12 casualties on stretchers.

The helicopters are equipped with modern avionics and instrumental equipment, to operate in all weather conditions at any time of the day.

The armor protection provided over the crew cabin and vital units increases the combat survivability of the helicopter.

The helicopter has an IR-decoy dispensing system to counter an infrared homing surface-to-air missile or air-to-air missile.

The fuel tank self-sealing covers and polyurethane foam protection avoid the possibility of fuel explosions and leakage in case of combat damage.

The Mi-171Sh is armed with a Shturm-V high-precision guided missile system.

The missiles can destroy modern battle tanks protected by explosive reactive armor, fortified points and aerial targets.

The Shturm-V missile complex launches Ataka supersonic missiles equipped with a hollow-charge warhead for defeating armored targets. The missile can destroy aerial targets with a fragmentation warhead and lightly armored combat materiel by using a high-explosive warhead.

The Mi-171Sh is also provided with hardpoints to carry up to 80 S-8 unguided rockets and GSh-23L 23mm cannons, with an ammunition load of 500 rounds.

Small arms, such as the 7.62mm PKT machine gun, PK machine gun and RPK light machine gun, are mounted in the nose and rear fuselage sections.

The multifunctional cargo cabin has a length of 5.34m, width of 2.34m and a height of 1.8m. It provides enough internal space to carry 4,000kg of payload.

“The Mi-171Sh was specifically designed for operating in combat missions in local armed conflicts.”

The Mi-171Sh is powered by two Klimov TV3-117VM turboshaft engines mounted on top of the fuselage. Each engine is rated at 1,641kW. The helicopter can be optionally fitted with two VK-2500 turboshaft engines, each rated at 2,700hp.

The Mi-171Sh can fly at a maximum altitude of 6,000m. The maximum speed of the helicopter is 250km/h. The range (without auxiliary fuel tanks) is 580km.

The helicopter has a maximum take-off weight of 13,000kg.

light ch-47 +ah-1z viper…look like russians fousing on niche products…

Volker

Niche Product? Mi-17 is the export version of their absolutely best selling, probably one of the best, multipurpose Mi-8 Helicopter and Mi-17sh is just ONE of the many variations military + civilian alike.

Servet Köseoğlu

there is no helo in other countries like this..niche market is a focused, targetable portion of a broader market in which specialized products or services can be sold…or other version where big corporations missed it or doesnt want to produce for particular reasons…

Антон С

“Niche Product?” For all niches with one machine, that would be more correct.

Volker

This ‘Platform’ is just brilliant for many purposes, from luxury VIP transportation over arctic to high altitude from SAR to firefighting to all kind of millitary and transport variations.

Антон С

VIP version. Documentary about new MoD building – the State Defense center of Russian federation. Right in the beginning you can see interior with leather chairs and exterior.

A posh military version for head of states or top brass…but they made super deluxe civilian versions like highend business jets for some corporate tycoons or oligarchs as well.

Lone Ranger

Mi-17 is more versatile and better suited for the arctic and desert and mountain operations.
Even Delta and Seal are using them in Afghanistan.

PZIVJ

First you blow the hell out of the enemy, and then you land the troops. :)

Servet Köseoğlu

or land the troops first then blow the enemy..troops will return with empty hands and blames the pilot wtf you landed us if you destroy them?dilemma..

Lone Ranger

Probably the best overall military helo ever produced when we look at broad capebilities.

Servet Köseoğlu

yes its very handy…

Lone Ranger

The helo on the pic is also equipped with laser directional countermeasures…
Nice.

Angry Birds

Is that helo with the digital camo the same variant, just curious

Lone Ranger

It looks like it, yes.

Антон С

There are no other variants of Mi-8/17 with digital paint scheme. More photos: http://bastion-karpenko.ru/mi-8amtsh-vn/

Servet Köseoğlu

front utility helo..its have serious issues with its operations at various weathers…mi-17 sh carrries 26 troops..this one maximum 10 when you load 12-14 soldiers you have to disassemble some weapons..only advantage is aerial mines

Антон С

That’s another issue, but such kind of helicopter still exists.

Servet Köseoğlu

exists but different classes..at high terrain hot conditions after a certain flight it starts serious problems..we are using these and ı hate this helo but even this better than french as-532 cougar…our gendarmerie is still using mi-17 with alittle touch of ukranian modernisation..solid frame..comment image

Антон С

“Touch of ukranian modernisation” can be very dangerous. Ask Croatia (bad quality repair of MiG-21), Thailand (new T-84, 50 tanks in 10 years, the contract is cancelled in favor of chinese tanks), Iraq (BTR-4 with cracks in armor) and Pakistan (decided to buy new chinese tanks instead modernization of T-80UD). If your Mi-17 will fall, you know the reason – magic touch of people with hands from the ass.) Such kind of economy (with cheap repair) could cost more than you think.

Servet Köseoğlu

thats is exactly true..

cechas vodobenikov

this regards most weapons; few function equally well in all climates, terrains

CIA does not provide English teachers in your trailer park?

Tommy Jensen

I have the rights to defend my country as stated in our Constitution. You have not.
I love our trailer parks because this is one of our freedoms, and you dont have trailer parks because you are a dictatorship country.

cechas vodobenikov

“the US constitution is a ruling class document”. Charles Beard
“the US constitution contains inherent contradictions that encourages dictatorship”. Kurt Godel
“the East German Stasi could only have dreamed of having a police surveillance state like USA”. Thomas Drake
“US election laws only exist in dictatorships like Azerbaijan”. Seth Ackerman
in USA a corporation is an individual—while you do incarcerate more per capita than any nation in history–not 1 corporation has been…”only the least developed societies punish widely and severely”. Durkheim…u backward primitives r the only nation in the Western Hemisphere that has capital punishment (supported by 65-70% of your backwards primitives—not 1 Nation from Russia to UK does…again u display that u r white trash…a nation that is comprised of the lowest most incompetent classes from other societies…LOL
