Branches of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) in the Vladimir and Ryazan regions have exposed a terrorist cell which plotted an attack on a military base, the FSB office for the Vladimir Region said in a statement on August 2.
“The criminal gang’s leader planned to attack a military base with the help of his accomplices to seize weapons and ammunition,” the FSB said.
“The perpetrator and his accomplices have been detained. The FSB branch in the Vladimir Region has opened an investigation under Article 220.127.116.11. of the Russian Criminal Code (abetting terrorism), which carries a sentence of up to life imprisonment.”
According to the FSB statement, the cell’s leader and organizer, born in 1999, comes from the Vladimir Region.
On July 31, the FSB announced that a terror attack at an infrastructure facility in Tatarstan in the Volga Federal District had been thwarted and two ISIS members suspected of plotting it had been detained.
“The Russian Federal Security Service jointly with the Russian Interior Ministry have foiled a terror attack at an infrastructure facility in Tatarstan as part of an earlier opened criminal case,” the FSB said.
Two suspects were detained at the scene. The FSB said that they were linked to recruiting local citizens to terror groups and terrorism propaganda. Explosives and elements of improvised explosive devices were seized from the suspects.
Official statements released by authorities indicate that the FSB had thwarted at least 15 terrorist attacks since the start of 2019.
