Russia Deploys New Units Of S-400 Air Defense Systems To Syria (Video)

A screenshot from the video

Russia has deployed new units of the S-400 air defense systems to Syria. The systems will protect Russian facilities in the war-torn country.

The video circulating online show the deployment of at least four of the systems:

  • Two were deployed to the Khmeimim Airbase in the province of Latakia;
  • Two were deployed to a maritime facility in Tartus.

The S-400 is the long-range mobile anti-aircraft system currently in service within the Russian Armed Forces. It is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles.

Russia deployed the first S-400 system to Khmeimim to boost air defense capabilities of its forces in Syria in 2015. The deployment came after the downing of a Russian Su-24 warplane by Turkey.

They should be given to the Syrian forces in the south to protect against the sneaky, cowardly zionists firing on Damascus and its forces from lebanese ,and occupied territories in the Golan.

    • Barba_Papa

Or maybe Iran should send some of its S-300 batteries down there? Hell, even as long as they are part of an integrated air defense system, as in being data linked to the Russian networks, even the Syrian S-200’s can still prove deadly to the IDF’s incursions.

      • Pave Way IV

The actual incursions into Syrian airspace are rare, Barba_Papa. Nearly all the IAF attacks have been with standoff weapons from Lebanese coastal airspace or Israeli/Jordanian airspace. The coastal attack aircraft are usually too far out and obscured by the mountain range. Syrian air defenses are of little use against them even though they can ‘see’ them from the Russian S-400 links. They have taken shots at a few that got close enough, so Israel keeps its distance. The Israeli/Jordanian airspace attacks go unchallenged. Israel had al Nusra take out every air defense and radar site along the Golan border at the start of the war. Doubt if Syria would move anything down there now. They’re trying to keep Damascus protected with whatever they have left.

    • Wegan

The S-400 is integrated with the russian systems already, Syrian Army can see the upcoming attacks from far. This is one reason why Israel and US are not striking Syria anymore, it’s too risky. It’s even riskier now with another batch of S-400 coming in (this one is probably to avoid a swarm attack)

      • as

Probably new batch of production line customized for Syria deployment.

      • dontlietome

Following the swarm attack, I too wondered if the Russians would deploy extra AA measures………………….. and ” Hey Presto”.

        • Julius Meinel

I do not think these 4 units are for the Khmeimim airbase or for the one in Tartus. i could be wrong, but I take a cue from the fact that the missiles units proper are accompanied by a command and control unit and a radar unit.
If they were to be located at Khmeimim, they could have used to pre existing radar and command post that are there for over two years now. I think there are destined for a more distant location where the radar located at Khmeimim does not reach, and where a local command post is required.

I do not think that they are intended for small drones either. This would be an overkill. For that Pant sir misses are more better suited. We shall find out soon where they will pop up.

This will help extend the range of tracking in Syria , they have been upgrading older mobile batteries to the Mirage 2. They had already received these back in December and will be deploying them possibly to Damascus airport since that would help there.

          • Ronald

There was talk of a Russian air base in Dier Ezzor .

          • Joe

My opinion is they ate hetting prepared in case there is a showdown with US which wants to stay illegally and Russia supports SAA to recover the land.

One can never under estimate the stubbornness of US which lack any rational in all they do.

I don’t think Russia will back down on this
This massive number of S400 plus a large arms supplies of military stuff arriving to Syria by sea.

All points to getting ready as 7 years if war would be wasted by allowing US to establish permanent bases there.

      • Justin

I agree but a swarm attack? u mean a drone swarm attack? So far this was Russia’s biggest threat! Apparently they are working on newer, smaller and cheaper missiles that are more specific to drones! Because the missiles used on the Pantsir are more for aircraft and cruise missiles!

        • Terra Cotta Woolpuller

The guns are not,so they can target both this is bout providing a better and wider tracking coverage.

        • Wegan

A swarm could come from a huge number of missiles that will deplete the battery before it is recharged in time. Pantsir is there to take care of low altitude and swarm attacks.

          • Justin

yes agree but the pantsir can also target / destroy cruise missiles!

Im sure the Russian’s have BUK M-3’s there too!

“The Pantsir-S1 was designed to provide point air defence of military/industrial/administrative installations against aircraft, helicopters, precision munitions, cruise missiles and UAVs and to provide additional protection to air defence units from enemy air attacks employing precision munitions especially at the low to extremely low ranges”

“On 19 October 2012, two missiles fired from a Pantsir shot down a live cruise missile in a test in Russia.[21] In 2014 tests, targets moving as fast as 1,000 metres per second (3,300 ft/s; Mach 2.9) were shot down with Pantsir”

    • Justin

the Syrians systems are looked into Russian systems! So if Russia detects something, Syrian S-200’s kick in and shoot down! also the Syrians have the Pantsir s-1 and BUK-M2’s! Not so bad! Less and less air attacks will take place!

Most likely to prepared for the fight with Americans after Sochi when Kurds and US decides to steal Northern Syria.

They are bringing not one but 4 Systems !

Surely they are for shooting down toy drones

No way Russia can allow the Americans to be in Syria for good … Impossible

    • Barba_Papa

Seems like insane overkill to shoot down a cheap toy drone with a S-400, when the much cheaper and more mobile Pantsir system can do that way easier. Its what has probably downed most of them so far.

Personally I think they should deploy some S-400 near Raqqa and Deir Ezzor. Nothing says fuck you more to the US Chair Force then deploying a deadly SAM battery near where the pampered boys in blue like to fly.

      • You can call me Al

It does seem a little strange, but I would wait and see what the plan is – the range of them also cover the North West of Syria doesn’t it ? or not – “The S-400 uses four missiles to fill its performance envelope: the very-long-range 40N6 (400 km), the long-range 48N6 (250 km), the medium-range 9M96E2 (120 km) and the short-range 9M96E (40 km)”.

I don’t know, but it will be for a good reason.

      • Rüdiger Preiss

Why Raqqa & Deir Ezzor? Where do you think most of the air power is coming from?
The Persian Gulf is covered by Iran. It would make more sense to move some S400s further South towards Damascus & the Jordanian border – but so close to Israel & with unsecured areas in the South surely they are better placed in Lattakia :).

        • Barba_Papa

Because the IDF only occasionally takes a potshot at Syria, the Americans on the other hand not only fly over it constantly, they’re supporting the division of that country with their military (air)power. Take away that airpower, or at the least make them extremely uncomfortable knowing that at any time they could be taken down, and they might become a little less uppity and maybe a little more agreeable. Currently they’re doing what they are doing because they get away with it. And methinks S-400 batteries near Raqqa and Deir Ezzor would cover most airspace over this socalled Rojava.

          • Rüdiger Preiss

Most of the coalition forces air power (let’s call them US for short) is positioned in the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean. To position S400s towards the East of Syria would need a lot more logistics & those S400 batteries would too easily be a target themselves. Strategically I don’t see the benefit when this area is well covered by Iran. No doubt there is a Plan ‘B’ should things escalate that badly, Iran wouldn’t just sit and watch.

  • Nigel Maund

There’s a very good reason why these have been brought in at this time. The message to the US and its Proxies including Israel are very clear. Syrian air space can be completely closed to US, NATO and Israeli air forces if the Russians so choose. The Cabal has been outflanked once again. Putin’s game is chess and he is a Grandmaster.

    • Gabriel Hollows

You talk like if those S-400 were teleported to Syria just today. These deliveries were planned a week if not weeks ago.

      • Turbofan

Hmm.not so sure about that. Remember when the Su 24 was shot own by Turkey..these thing were brought over to Syria almost over night. That is the whole point of the S400..quick deployment…

        • Justin

I disagree! Yes they can be deployed fast, there is no doubt! But the fact someone dared to shoot down a Russian bomber was crazy! Keep in mind the war ships they have in the Med have the equivalency of s-300 systems!
Russia does not escalate, they allow others to do so and they act in a defensive posture! If the S-400’s were there first, there would be huge complaints because the world MSM would say “russia delivers anti ballistic missile and anti aircraft systems into syria yet the FSA and ISIS do not have an airforce”!

So the moment the losing side escalates, russia replies in kind! I think Russia had this S-400 waiting and ready but needed an excuse to do so! It may even be the reason why they were flying so close to turkey’s border. Wanting turkey to react so they could bring it in!

Its very important that Russia does not look to be the aggressor! if u remember the term “Russian Aggression”! this is why it had to seem defensive and justified!

This is how this war is being won! syria and Russia receive some black eyes but they are winning the war! Masterful game they are playing!

          • Terra Cotta Woolpuller

They needed the excuse to release the video as this was in December last year.

      • Nigel Maund

The Russians plan well ahead and therefore I agree with your comment. They also have a clear idea what the US, Israeli & Deep State (CIA) battle plan for Syria is.

      • Justin

        months and months!

    • You can call me Al

I wonder if this is to follow through with their threat of downing the Turkish planes or at least missiles shot by them.

I am assuming of course that the Syrian / Russians will use the ABU-AL Duhar base after refurbishment (5 days).

      • Justin

I think they will use that airbase initially with only helicopters! Repairs will need to be made and they are still too close for incoming artillery fire

    • Assad must stay (gr8rambino)

He is like a modern day version of thrawn from star wars lol i love it :)))

  • Bolter10

This was planned a while ago as ships took a week at tleast to deliver As-400 systems.
So Putin can close off air space over his new Turkish Allies airspace just in case US get any ideas.

  • Manie

Am not expert, but based on available information, seems like an Over kill, concentrating all the S-400 system along the Syrian coast. Obvious reasons would be because it’s the most secure locations. Why not deploy a unit or two close to Derzoir or Raqqa so as to cover the entire Syrian Airspace. I also wonder if this is simply a disguise move, by stating that it’s for the protection of the Russian contingent, but in reality it will be eventually handed over to the Syrian air Force once Idlib, and all the other remaining pockets of terrorists are vanquished and the areas fully secured to ensure such powerful weapons don’t end up in the hands of terrorists. In the meantime the Russians could be training Syrian air Defense units how to operate the system effectively..

    • Blaine

Maybe the prime rationale is to down cruise missiles from the Med.

Stationing them to protect the Southern regions of Syria against Israel is problematic. Most if not all attacks are launched from Leb airspace, shooting down an IAF jet over Lebanon is liable to cause civilian casualties, and I don’t think Assad is prepared to shoot down an Israeli jet over Israel.

By the time they launch, Syrian options, under the current situation, are limited to intercepting the actual missiles, which they’ve been doing with reasonable success.

    • zman

People are still apparently woefully unaware of the Russian/Syrian agreement. Russia’s deployment of AA systems are for the protection of Russian assets. Russia has not agreed to protect Syria from other aggressors, only IS/AQ,etc. IS/AQ do not have an air force, regardless of the fact that Israel and NATO forces act as such, therefore Russia cannot, within their agreement framework, act as their protector. This gives international legitimacy to the Russian effort, while pretending to work with the west. Iran, more likely than not, probably have their own versions of manpads in theater, yet have not used them. It should be obvious to everyone by now that the name of the game is NOT to expand the fighting. Openly confronting the western alliance would allow propaganda excuses for expansion, which is not to Russia’s, Iran’s or Syria’s benefit. Their strategy does, however, allow the Syrian alliance to continue to degrade western forces at will and has returned much of Syria to SAA control. This would not have happened if they had chosen to confront every pin-prick inflicted by US/Israel. All this being said, Russia has undoubtedly been involved with actions in defense of Syria beyond it’s agreement, but only with deniability…as with the US 59 cruise-missile attack. This was a tactical (warning) decision and the US was hardly in a position to use any action by the Russians to advantage. Admitting their cruise missiles were neutralized is not something the US would ever want to admit…and the Russians got their message across…without using S-400s. To me, this looks to be a response to the swarm tactic ploy. Only these missiles would be confronting cruise-type missiles, not $5 drones. It’s better to be safe, rather than sorry. Russia has been helping the Syrians by upgrading their old S-200 systems, which while not cutting edge, are still formidable, especially when integrated with the Russian systems, which they have done.

      • Manie

Fully Agree with your assessment. Regarding escalating the conflict with the west. However my speculation is, what would stop the Syrian government from acquiring the S-400 system besides the financial cost… And security concerns. the Russians are selling the system to several nation states. Why not Syria? My guess is the Syrians are quite interested in the system.. and if they can afford it why not acquire it to complement the current upgraded Systems they have in place. Besides why should the Russians be the ones threatening NATO/ allied planes .. it should be Syria’s job. Unfortunately their resources are limited. The Russians, Chinese, Iranians could help the Syrians develope the capability over time.

        • Terra Cotta Woolpuller

Sanctions imposed by bogUS claims endorsed by the UN which nixed the purchase of S-300 systems , the sanctions are creating a human disaster in Syria and shortages of medicines. The real tragedy is the ones responsible can’t be dealt with in the ICJ, but wouldn’t want them tried there too corrupt.

        • zman

Thank you for the intelligent reply. My guess is that at this point Syria cannot afford to purchase very many armaments, for obvious reasons. If memory serves me correctly, Russia has basically ‘gifted’ the Syrians some of the equipment they have received. That being said, look at the S-400 sale to Turkey, who is in eminently better financial shape and the financing they arranged with Russia for the purchase. This would be a fairly expensive investment, although a good one. You are right, it is Syria’s job to defend against Israeli/NATO attacks. However, none of these attacks (with the exception of the Deir Ezzor attack) have been a real detriment and seem only to serve as distractions. Then again, look to Iran. They have the ability to furnish Syria with their versions of Russian systems, yet have not, at least to any real extent. I think the major cause of the lack of Syrian weaponry to exact real damage on interlopers goes back to the escalation argument. I would find it hard to believe that Iranian backed groups in Syria do not have Iranian manpads…yet, how many times, if ever, have they used them? I believe the ‘escalation’ argument from the west would be: Syria cannot afford these systems, therefore Russia or Iran must be supplying them with these weapons, therefore the we must arm anti-gov forces with equitable systems. At any rate, the Syrians are better off getting weapons that are valuable on the battlefield at this time, rather than to break the bank for a system that could exacerbate the situation and not be of any real use on the battlefield. At some point in the future, I expect that Syria will acquire more modern and effective systems, but at this point they might actually be a deficit, rather than as asset. As for the Russians/Chinese/Iranians…yes, once the country is stable (or more stable and able to generate revenues)…they could definitely contribute through loans/guarantees, favorable conditions for the acquisition of S-300s/clones, newer Russian/Chinese aircraft, etc. But at this point upgraded T-72/T-90 tanks are far more necessary and useful than S-300s.

‘…russia is not friendly country for syria…’
More entirely predictable misinformation and hopelessly false rhetoric from you.
Russia secured the Syrian state and leadership from serious threat in 2105. In 2015 the NATO/Gulf sponsored Sunni militant factions were beginning to shell and threaten Lakatia – in 2018 the SAA has the NATO/Gulf sponsored Sunni factions largely besieged in south and contained in Idlib. Russia completely foiled the foreign sponsored regime change war on Syria – and there are lot of NATO/Gulf and Israeli officials who are furious about this outcome.

Israeli terrorists broke into Masjid Al Aqsa

Since 1917 to 1920 Palestine was under British occupation. Then on 1 July 1920 the British regime handed over the control of Palestine to the Herbert Samuel the Zionist minister in the British cabinet and the first high commissioner to Palestine.
Then in 1948 the British regime handed over Palestine to a new kind of brutal power called the Zionist terrorists the illegal European migrants (Israel). So Palestine never got independence from foreign occupation. In 2018 Palestine is still under occupation of Zionists the illegal European terrorists.

Mahmoud Abbas should immediately withdraw from the recognition of illegal European migrants state of Israel, which is a newly build state of European illegal migrants on the homeland of Palestinians. For Palestine the recognition of Zionist state of Israel is like to put whole nation of Palestine under occupation of illegal European migrants.

Mahmoud Abbas should protest to the all world leaders that why you have recognized the Zionist state of foreign illegal European migrants in the homeland of Palestine. Tell to all of them to immediately withdraw from the recognition of Israel. Once they withdrew from the recognition of illegal state of Israel then Palestine will liberate itself.

The world leaders will listen to Mahmoud Abbas because his whole nation is suffering under occupation. Mahmoud Abbas should not tell to any leader to recognize Palestinian state. If Mahmoud Abbas is traitor and prefer Israeli state on the homeland of Palestinians then Palestine cannot be freed.

I’m kind of wondering exactly what was sent to Syria. An entire S-400 ‘system’ would be a regimental-sized unit with an acquisition radar and (AFIK) three to six fire batteries. The equipment in the video appears to be an fire battery engagement radar (92N6?) and a few TELs. This could be for something to do with the low altitude coverage gap south of Homs. If it is a full system with its own acquisition radars and command center, then that would mean three full S-400 systems in Syria. That would be quite remarkable. Reports lack specific detail, so impossible to tell either way. And Russia is generally not in the habit of advertising details of their air defense network.

Syria was one step away from the fall of Damascus when the Lebanese and Iranians began plugging holes in the fall back position lines and then the Russians got involved with air support and the loss of land under government control stopped. First they liberated the western population centers from the Jew world order terrorists, which took some time. And now they’re liberating the rest of the country. The government coalition foot print grows every day as the regime change foot print shrinks. I don’t see that changing.

ISIS is creation of US, Israel, Saudi, Turkey ,UAE,NATO.

all of them? :DDDD how created?

isis is self-made organization. the mentioned countries only used isis, after it was born on ruins of saddams army.
isis was from the first moment of existence anti american.

            >>>isis is self-made organization

ISIS have their own airline, shipping, hotel chain (Especially in Turkey ),
Have own pharmaceutical company to make Captigon?

Saddam Army of traitors… who take Pallets of Cash for Iraqi trash.
Some were Baathist and did assist or form up with ISUS units .
Must have been crazy in Raqqa as ISUS Baathist roll in and start headchopping the
            Baathist of Syria.

Truly a war where you need a game day program to keep up with roster changes.

If America didn’t have a Jew government, none of this would be happening. Russia, China and the US would be working together, rather than being adversaries. The US and our planet need to be dejudified for humanity to have a better future. Dejudification in Europe, the near east and north Africa 1946 to 2010:

I don’t think that this initiative will strengthen the long term security of Syria and the fact that the article mentions Turkey downing the Russian SU 24 back in November 2015 indicates that no one is expecting the Air Defence System to be deployed against israeli attacks, and really the Zionists have not been in anyway a focus of the purpose behind this war, the leadership of the ME has always been the driving force of the Arab Spring which is culminating in Syria and Yemen.

The West began to realise since 2012 that israel is a spent force in terms of Ideology effecting the US and European jingoistic capacities, having lost the purported inevitable Divine Sanction using my intellectual property, the grubs have suffered a drying up their effluent lodgings to a big extent.

Syria could achieve a peace like Libya and the can would be just kicked further down the road.

There has to be a ME leader now because the West has lost the capacity to fulfill that role, and Syria under Assad or anyone else is not in contention.

The choice is clear it’s either israel and KSA plus a few Gulf Principalities with a heavy reliance on Sisi’s Egypt, or its Turkey, Qatar Iran Hezbollah Iraq and Syria being the go-to Poweres to decide principal issues, a big one will be repetitions if war is to be discontinued instead of complete attrition, and its there that Russia and the US will leave it up to the regional forces as they will cancel each other out.

This is the intention of Allah and why He supported IS to bring about this situation which would not exist had not IS stymied the al-Nurash Front.

Assad should now support Turkey Qatar Hezbollah and the Muslim Brotherhood to wage war on KSA openly.

Public opinion in the West is no longer hinged on supposed humanitarian issues, the West is over that belief in the invincible power of the NATO, now it’s the cost of the aggression and the possibility of losing that the Western Public is considering.

This is great! Turkey is giving Russia the diplomatic cover Russia needs to increase its military presence in Syria again after the defeat of ISIS..
