Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili, speaking in Tbilisi on Wednesday at the First Forum of Diasporas, called catastrophe the country’s population, – reports correspondent of the newspaper LOOK in Georgia.
According to Irakli Garibashvili, population today is 3,7 million people.
“Over one million officially went abroad, but actually it can be a million and a half or two million,” – said the prime minister.
Irakli Garibashvili marked that this is a consequence of the difficult situation in Georgia for the last 25 years. He said Georgia develops ideas to be attractive to return people.
According to various sources, about 800,000 people moved from Georgia to Russia. Only last year, according to National Bank, in spite of the economic problems in Russia, they have transferred to the homeland more than 700 million dollars for their families and loved ones. This amount of remittances is many times more than immigrants from other countries transferred.
Prime Minister says Georgia has “unique resources and great potential” and the country should not be poor, most importantly, it has to use its resources properly.
