The Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) announced on January 23 that its units had targeted a drone that approached one of its headquarters in western Iraq.

In an official statement, the Iraqi coalition said that mysterious drone was flying over the headquarters of its 45th Brigade, which is located near the al-Qa’im crossing on the border with Syria.

“The force engaged the drone with anti-aircraft weapons, forcing it to retreat,” the statement reads.

A few hours after the incident, Syrian and Iraqi sources reported airstrikes on PMU bases near al-Qa’im. However, these claims were quickly denied by the Kata’ib Hezbollah (KH), one of the main PMU factions.

Earlier this month, a U.S. drone strike on the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, claimed the lives of the PMU Deputy-Commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis along with Iran’s Quds Force Commander Maj. Gen. Qassim Soleimani.

The PMU vowed to response to the assassination of both leaders by expelling U.S. troops from Iraq, warning from any further attacks on its personnel and positions.
