On Saturday, it is reported that thousands of people staged protest rallies in several European capitals, including London, Amsterdam, Athens and Vienna, to voice their support for the war stricken refugees of the Middle East.

According to the report, the protesters have shown their discord with the recent Turkey-EU deal to restricting the refugee influx of Europe.

About 4,000 people in London, some 3,000 protesters in Athens filled the streets by holding placards written “Refugees welcome here”, “Stand up to racism”, “Open the borders” and “We are human beings, and we have rights”.

There are also reports of several thousand people in Barcelona who carried banners with slogans such as “No person is illegal.” Some Swiss cities of Geneva, Zurich and Lucerne also observed rallies of hundreds of people.

According to the controversial agreement between Turkey and EU, Ankara will be obliged to take back all refugees deported from Greece and EU will accept thousands of Syrian refugees directly from Turkey.

The agreement also stated that Turkey will start accepting the illegal on March 20 and Turkey will start sending refugees into the EU from April 4.

The aid agencies and rights groups, including the United Nations’ refugee agency, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the UK-based NGO Save the Children, and Amnesty International,  has raised questions about the EU-Turkey deal’s legality and practicability.

“An asylum-seeker should only be returned to a third state, if the responsibility for assessing the particular asylum application in substance is assumed by the third country; the asylum-seeker will be protected from refoulement; and if the individual will be able to seek and, if recognized, enjoy asylum in accordance with accepted international standards, and have full and effective access to education, work, health care and, as necessary, social assistance,”  said Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Although, there is a strong accusation against the west of fostering terrorism in the Middle East, which is being considered as the main reason behind the departure of refugees from their home countries.
