A new “smart sight” for mortars has been successfully tested in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Dmitry Rogozin, former head of Russia’s Roscosmos space corporation, announced via his Telegram channel on November 10.
The smart sight was tested on a heavy mortar by service members from the DPR’s 1st Army Corps at the Tsarist Wolves training center, which was established very recently to help Donetsk forces with military-technical issues.
“Today in Donbass, our technical group … successfully completed trials of a ‘smart sight’ for mortars. Very soon, the new technology will be used in combat along the entire frontline,” Rogozin said in a Telegram post.
During the test, a 2S12 Sani 120 mm mortar equipped with the smart sight fired several rounds hitting all targets. A video of the test was shared by Rogozin.
The smart sight is apparently built around a ballistic computer that computes, according to various factors, the ballistic trajectory required to hit the target with the particular type of mortar round to be fired.
Rogozin said that more military equipment and technologies designed by the Tsarist Wolves training center will be tested in the coming weeks and months.
DPR forces have been taking part in the Russian special military operation in Ukraine from the start. Donetsk officially joined the Russian Federation last September.
