New Idlib Ceasefire Is Already Crumbling And Nobody Is Surprised

On March 6, the Syrian region of Greater Idlib entered another ceasefire phase with al-Qaeda-linked groups breathing a sigh of relief thanks to Turkish sacrifices in the battle against the Syrian Army. However, the pause in the Turkish-Syrian military confrontation just reduced the tensions rather than put an end to them.

A few minutes after the start of the ceasefire agreed by Turkish and Russian presidents in Moscow, an intense fighting erupted between Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and pro-government forces. ‘Democratic al-Qaeda rebels’ attacked positions of regime troops near Fleifel, Sufuhon and Fatterah. Meanwhile, Turkish-backed groups carried out an attack on Russia’s Hmeimim airbase with unmanned aerial vehicles.

In the following days, Idlib militant groups regularly shelled army positions near Saraqib and Kafr Nabul simultaneously complaining about ceasefire violations by the Syrian military. The most active yammerer was the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP), an al-Qaeda-affiliated group mostly consisting of Chinese Uyghurs. Its stronghold, Jisr al-Shughur, is located within the agreed buffer zone along the M4 highway. The situation is especially ironic because the terrorist organization is excluded from the ceasefire. The group’s leadership fully understands that the creation of the buffer zone is not possible as long as it presents there. So, it reasonably expects a Syrian Army operation there.

The TIP’s more courageous counterparts from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham announced that they reject the Moscow agreement. The main reason is that it excludes the al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups like the TIP and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Additionally, the former offshoot of al-Qaeda in Syria officially thanked Turkey for the assistance in the battle against the Damascus government. The Syrian Army responded to a series of failed militant attacks with a limited offensive in southern Idlib. On March 7, it liberated the villages of Marat Makhus and Burayj.

On March 8, Turkish President Recep Erdogan, to whom Hayat Tahrir al-Sham officially sent its thanks, once again threatened to take a military action in Idlib if the ceasefire deal is not adhered to.

“If the promises made regarding Operation Spring Shield are not kept, we reserve the right to clean up [the area] using our own methods,” the Turkish president said.  “We signed this agreement to provide a solution to the crisis in Idlib without further bloodshed. Otherwise, we will continue to walk our own path.”

The statement came as the Turkish Armed Forces continued their military buildup in Greater Idlib sending more and more troops and equipment to Syria. Recently Erdogan forces established several new posts north of the M4 highway, as always just near positions occupied by al-Qaeda terrorists.

The Turkish leader too quickly forgot that his forces recently failed to turn into reality the previous batch of threats against Syria and promises regarding a swift and easy victory in Idlib. Instead, they suffered notable casualties, failed to achieve any of declared goals and got a painful reminder that the real war is not a piece of cake.

The newly-appointed commander of Iran’s Qods Force, Brig. Gen. Esmail Ghaani, recently visited the province of Aleppo. He was photographed alongside with several other persons, apparently Qods Force officers working on the ground in Syria. The visit of Brig. Gen. Ghaani to Aleppo is a signal that Iran is not going to abandon its Syrian allies and will support Damascus in the event of a new round of escalation in the region.

I don’t know why, but I suspect that Erdogan is only using the ceasefire to strongly resupply his terrorists while slowly invading the Syrian territory with more soldiers and heavy gears, all while getting ready his S400 system silently and discreetly from the month of April, then being able to take over and land all Russian and Syrian planes from the Syrian sky .
    Very cunning and risky plans

    • Tim Williams

S 400 will not work until the computer system is loaded … the Russian training has been put on hold for the TURKS .. it’s a giant paper weight for now

    • Vollkrassmann

I guess, no, I’m sure that Putin is not a dumbass, he knows the deal with the Turkeys, he knows the technical details, he cooperates with his military staff – so I can’t imagine that aggressor Erdogan is so silly to let Russian jets crash…

Turkey attacked Syrian army positions in Idlib

Damascus, March 9th. The Turkish army attacked the positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the province of Idlib. About this on Twitter reports the Syrian television channel Halab Today TV.

It is reported that the Turkish military attacked near the city of Serakib.

      https://twitter.com/HalabTodayTV/status/1237021420791750658

Recall that the situation in Idlib sharply worsened on February 27 when militants of the Khayyat Tahrir Al-Sham group (formerly Jebhat al-Nusra 1 , banned in the Russian Federation), controlled by Turkey, launched an attack, but the SAA stopped the advance of jihadists.

During the hostilities killed 36 Turkish soldiers who participated in the clashes on the side of the terrorists. The Russian military took measures to ceasefire and safely evacuate the wounded and killed.

The leaders of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reached a ceasefire agreement on March 5 in Moscow, which is regularly violated by both the Turkish military and terrorists controlled by them.

Earlier it was reported that Ankara requested assistance from NATO in connection with the situation in Idlib. According to Erdogan, it is needed to protect the border with Syria, the Federal News Agency reported .

Erdogan played Putin again as he need more time to rearm and resupply Turkey army and militants. Erdogan never had any plans to have peace in SYria. Unfortunately, Putin pleasing policies for Erdogan’s has failed again. Putin games will only prolong war in SYria and SAA and Syria will pay again big price. Putin should be obligated to rearm and resupply SAA with more modern weapons, including 5 or 6 batteries S-400, SU-30, MIG-30 and etc…Fighting Turkey army and militants in Idlib gone be a lot harder now thanks to Putin blunders

    • Ricky Miller

I don’t think that Erdo has played Putin but certainly the Kremlin is playing a difficult game in Syria. The strategy seems to be to avoid any other major state actors in Syria, all the while trying to uphold the UN Charter and defeat the terrorist gangs that other state actors have armed and used as weapons in the effort to overthrow the Syrian government. Russia’s indirect support seems robust but her direct support and rules of engagement are nightmares, both from a strategy and military point of view. Russia threatens other state actors with Russian defenses if they fly their aircraft over Syrian government territory but the same state actors that don’t do that simply fire missiles from airspace beyond, thus damaging Syrian equipment and killing personnel. It seems to me, from a military point of view, that the act of firing a missile into the airspace and killing or causing damage would be the issue, not just the position an aircraft was in when it fired. These kinds of confusing rules of engagement and pretense just complicate the process and invite other players to poke at Syria’s defenses and see if they can get something to break before going so far as to irritate the Kremlin into a strategy change. What is Russia’s endgame? If Russia had forcefully responded to Turkey’s actions inside Syria we could right now be drawing the whole Idlib issue to a close. So here we are, with another cease fire and a no man’s territory where jihadi gangs are free to gather around the clubhouse and compare shiny new Turkish and CIA delivered weapons, waiting for the next chaotic and kinetic phase.

Can’t wait for another SAA operation.

  • lilbenavidez

Hate to raid your party but the Ceasefire dosen’t include Hezbullah and IRGC they are also on the UN terrorlist which means Russia is directly aiding a terrorist organistation.

It dosen’t include them which gives Turkey the right to conduct military operation outside Idlib as it dosen’t include Hezbullah and IRGC.

Nobody is clean in the Syrian war as everyone is on the UN blacklist as terror group. I suggest you lose that term otherwise your just exposing your BS and being partial

    • Ray Douglas

IRGC is not on the UN terrorist list. That was a unilateral action by the empire which is totally illegal. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

    • cechas vodobenikov

utter drivel, u fascist!–only the barbaric amerikans describe IRGC as “terrorsit”—amerikans the worst trerrorist in the history of mankind

you should probably go take a look at the list before going beserk rage. You will find them there

        • occupybacon

Less than 20 states designed Hesbollah as terrorist group. Turkey is not among them.

IRGC is designed as terrorist group by only 3 states and Israel or Turkey are not among them.
