NATO's Largest Drills In 16 Years Bring Carrier Strike Group, US Forces To Norway

The Trident Juncture military drill, which runs from October 25 to November 7, will become the large NATO drill in 16 years and will bring the USS Harry S. Truman Strike Group and its 6,000 servicemembers to Norway.

The drill will bring together more than 45,000 troops from across the alliance and will combine land, air and sea elements Furthermore, about 150 aircraft, over 60 ships and 10,000 military vehicles will participate in the exercise, according to NATO.

Trident Juncture goes near Russian borders and comes amid the growing tensions between the US-led bloc and Russia. However, the US and its allies still claim that the drill is not contributing to the growing tensions and it’s just a defensive training.

“Trident Juncture illustrates NATO’s relevance and unity in that we are ready to defend ourselves,” US Naval Forces Europe chief Adm. James Foggo told reporters October 9 at NATO’s Brussels HQ.

It should be noted that the US is the largest participant of Trident Juncture. About 18,000 US troops will take part in the drill.

The move already triggered concern in Russia, which describes the growing US-NATO activity near its borders as an escalation.

The Northern Fleet and the Khinzhal missiles would make a quick work of the naval task force

      Wishful thinking

      • Jesus

Wishful thinking? Russian array of standoff antiship missiles would make quick work of the carrier task force off Norway. What don’t you understand? Who is effective, F18’s with limited range not surpassing 500 kms, or missiles that move faster than F18’s with double or triple the range?
Or harpoon missiles that are subsonic and have a range of less than 100 miles, or supersonic cruise missiles that’s have a range of 600kms?

          • Ricky Miller

That’s a not so awesome failed reply to the fact that Russian missiles outrage the American designs and that American missiles attack with quite less velocity. In boxing terms American missiles are lacking in both reach and punching power. The problem is the Americans are such spoiled brats that the loss of a carrier probably leads them to a nuclear temper tantrum. Hence, all of us should be worried.

          • hope springs eternal.

The US needs a “punch in the nose” to wake up. And wake up they will, once a carrier goes down. I feel the public will bring the politicos to their senses. Russia is strong , waiting, conserved and prepared. She won’t back down if you strike her home.

          • Ricky Miller

The EU States are the ones who need to feel threatened. They enable the U.S. in getting away with this behavior. You know, “creating quagmires until they get what they want.” The Europeans go along with American designs because they are afraid of American fits. But with the presentation that Russia is the actual threat, even if it is the other way around. Ironically, for Russia to get to a peace conference and a change in what Europe is prepared to go along with in the America designed new world disorder, Russia has to actually become threatening enough to drag civilisation to the edge. It’s sick. Be a monster to get what you want and so be a bigger monster to induce Europe to stop living as an abused co-dependent. No wonder so many people think that a full nuclear exchange is in inevitable at this point.

          • hope springs eternal.

Agree with you in toto Rick. A new world disorder is what we are ‘sadly’ heading for. The European leaders all playing to the US gallery, rather than listen to their own people and common sense. Putin ordered a full dress rehearsal of a Nuclear drill 2 days ago. Things are getting to the edge.

          • Ricky Miller

In honor of your username maybe there’s a scenario where we get to where we need to be without major war. What if Russia simply begins large scale preperation for full scale war? First she withdraws from New Start and puts as many warheads on her missiles as she wants. Next, Russia closes her export market for grains and begins to produce survival food packs on a mass scale while working to expand her fallout shelter system, which is already better than anything in the West. Next, several months later bring diplomats home and close embassies across Europe and North America. At some point the European electorate is going to flip out and maybe full on apply the brakes to American schemes involving Europe, NATO. Maybe Europe and Russia come to a seperate agreement or series of deals involving Crimea, Ukraine, gas sales, American bases, manuevers, sanctions, the whole thing. Poland, the Baltic States and Ukraine might have to go their own way, full on American stooges. But NATO will fracture. And at least our communities and families don’t have to get killed in a major Atomic War or try to recover in the difficult era that comes later.

          • occupybacon

See, you got me wrong all along. I never say Russia can’t sink a NATO fleet, but what’s the difference between doing that with 100 conventional missiles ore a single nuke? You and the other blockhead hate your own life, fortunately the generals on both sides are sane people. Your ww3 dream won’t come true.

          • hope springs eternal.

Thank you Rick. I often wonder and admire the patience of the Russian people. If i was in Putin’s place, for sure I would have lost my cool long long back. Europe thrives on Russia gas to keep warm in winter, and still are constantly against Russia.
Sure hope good sense prevails! I think it will, life is “too good” for the elites to blow it away with a nuclear war.

          • John Whitehot

            finally.

the new tom clancy ‘s here.

          • Ricky Miller

I don’t think it’s all that fanciful. And for confirmation of where we’re headed just watch the news roll in day by day. And, for the record I am not now and never will be an insurance salesman.

          • John Whitehot

            hahhahhahha xDD

          • Tommy Jensen

            Come on.

This would only speed up the WWIII preparations, militariations and funds in EU. The whole Western system is too brainwashed to make the right decisions.

        • Sinbad2

The problem with sinking the US navy, which as you say would be very easy, is they would go straight to nukes nerve gas and germ warfare.
You are not dealing with sane people, ever seen an ICE addict smash his hand to pieces punching an iron door?
          America is that ICE addict.

          • Jesus

I do not know about that, US is playing the role of tough guy by pretense, the same way a kid walking through a cemetery at night whistling pretending he is not afraid.

      • Ricky Miller

Well U.S. commanders attached no fewer than nine escorts to their Carrier. Usual surface ship escort is three, maybe four. So not so wishful thinking they aren’t doubling up the protection. Problem is, it’s not close to enough in a real scrap. The Northern Fleet alone could sink the Task Group without help from air units or kinzhals. MARSHAL USTINOV is still away but Super Cruiser PYTOR VELIKY and the Frigate ADMIRAL GORSHKOV can launch a total of forty supersonic anti ship missiles. There is also a guided missile destroyer with eight more. And there are three massive ANTEY class submarines, rebuilt in the last ten years, who carry twenty four supersonic anti-ship missiles each, totalling seventy two. And the first of the Yasen class submarines can carry twenty supersonic anti-ship missiles, plus a few more in the torpedo armament. So without adding any aircraft or corvettes the Northern Fleet alone can launch no fewer than 140 supersonic missiles. There’s no coming back from that. I think Russia’s concern is in the very decision to hold large scale drills near the Russian border. It indicates a willingness to escalate and get in Russia’s face. This could lead to mishaps and conflict which might be hard to arrest. It’s reckless, that’s the concern. And it’s a concern shared in Norway where the government has tried to placate critics in both Parliament and the public, stating these exercises are meant to be defensive, and not a provocation. The problem is U.S. NeoCon types are saying more warlike things like “putting Russia on notice” and “there’s a big fight coming.” The Norwegian political class isn’t happy about it but are stuck with these drills.

        • occupybacon

Yeah I know that Russia shits bricks about NATO holding large scale drills near the Russian border, but the rest is just BS with that supersonic missiles to keep your mind busy.

          • Ricky Miller

You’re a red white and blue tight skirted cheerleader. You don’t respond with any technical points related to the range or ability of actual weapons but are good with pom-pom “go team go!” We number one, we number one. ..

          • occupybacon

            And we are not?

          • Ricky Miller

What you are not is willing to engage in rational discourse based on facts. If you have information that the U.S. force is lacking new missiles, state your claim. You ignore what anyone else says and reply with dim-witted rejoinders about brick shitting. I’m starting to take you even less seriously than I did before, and that’s hard. What is the range and attack speed of American anti-ship weapons? How does that compare with the range of Russian weapons? You don’t know or care, I’ll bet. Run along. It’s Sunday and almost time for Americanized football. What the rest of the world doesn’t call football.

          • occupybacon

I must admit you know more about American football than I do. Why should I take anyone seriously who is talking on the Internet about how Russia could sink a NATO fleet? It would be as I would talk seriously about aliens and Area 52 or whatever

          • Ricky Miller

It’s people like you who are going to be responsible for what’s coming. Must not have any children then. Your opinions like Russia being impotent at protecting herself gives politicians the maneuvering room to engage in these warmonging acts leading toward a blow up. But please, tell us more about invincible NATO weapons.

          • Promitheas Apollonious

            only in holywood

    • Every war since the beginning of the world proved that every weapon can be countered and everybody who put too much confidence to “superweapons” and technology superiority lost the war.

Russia have advanced weapon systems but build in such few numbers, that will be probably not able to protect itself against first NATO strike and will not have any strategical advantage.

But what is even more alarming is a fact, that NATO uses unconventional and assymetric attacks and Russia is totally passive and unprepared to counter them, as Putin doesn’t want to see that Russia IS ALREADY IN FULL SCALE WAR with the West and that full military confrontation is unavoidable.

      • Jesus

The Russian arsenal includes enough Oniks and Kalibr and KH101 cruise missiles to deal with the NATO fleet, layered over that system you have KH32 hypersonic missile, the Khinzhal and soon to be deployed Tsirkon. Their numbers are increasing.

What’s needed to deal with the carrier strike force? Say, 4 MiG 31 with Khinzhal and half a dozen T22 equipped with Khinzhal and KH 32.
NATO forces are inferior in combat capability since they represent various countries that come together for some military exercises, and they are not cohesive units that always train together and speak the same language, they have different equipment with different specs.
The ground forces deal with the same weaknesses, if NATO thinks they have a good chance to win any armed exchanges, consider the results of the sanctions and other forms of economic warfare from the G7 that made Russia stronger.
Russia does not have the financial clout of the NATO, however, their weapons kill very effectively.

        • Promitheas Apollonious

financial cloud of an economy that is nothing but debt? You have a funny way to understand reality.

          • Jesus

Last time I checked the dollar was still the reserve currency of the world, as long as this reality persists, US will freeload off the entire world

          • Promitheas Apollonious

not for long and been the trading tool do not eliminate the fact is worthless piece of paper, that very rapidly is becoming not welcome to 2/3s of the world. It is not accidental that Swiss do not accept american interest to be deposited within their banking system for more than 7 years now.

Also follow what is happening in the international market and you get a better understanding of what I am saying.

      • Promitheas Apollonious

according to you they are not. This indirect way you have to flatter your self is not healthy. Maybe is time to stop assuming you see and none other does especially russians.

    • Jens Holm

Rhe same oneyer again and again.

Some famous missile make the whole change as in Syria, where the first good result was a russian important airplane was shot down, som the russians probatly only på a fews S300 in plastic there.

You expect Nato fx here in Norway are very stupid sitting ducks having no defence and extra aircrafts, carriers missiles, B52 and the rest og Nato not comming but tremling camouflaging their last 5 ships at Scape Flow.

You have no idea of warfare and about how we are.

  • Promitheas Apollonious

no shit Sherlock`s, really are you concerned? maybe you should do something about it then and test the claimed new weapons you say you have?

    • Sinbad2

No fool like an old fool.

      • Promitheas Apollonious

no need to confess your limitations kid.

  • Ricky Miller

What Russia needs is for the KAZAN to commission soon. Yesterday would help. Reports, including photographs show Russia’s most advanced Nuclear Attack/Cruise Missile (yep, dual role. A++ grade performance in both) submarine leaving Severomorsk on September 25 for yet another shakedown mission. Once she and the fourth Borei class SSBN KNAYAZ VLADIMIR, also in Sea Trials, commission than the next ships of each class can launch and begin fitting out. Both of these units provide American military types already admitted headaches and significantly expand both Russia’s deterrence and capabilities to send NATO ships to greet one Davey Jones. Every day I check the news I check for KAZAN news first. The importance of this ship’s move to operational status is hard to overstate.

    • Jesus

It’s a Yassen class attack submarine, that will be armed with supersonic and eventually hypersonic missiles.

  • hope springs eternal.

Russia should make it clear that if they enter the territorial waters of Russia, then there’s no guarantee on the carrier and it’s flunkies safe return.

    • Nobody listens what Russia says.
They could sink Donald Cook in Black Sea in April 2014. But they didn’t. They just shut down electricity on US destroyer and let it alone. Russia even jammed and knocked out whole NORAD in 2017. This was huge warning but West answered with anti Russia hysteria as we can see in Scripal hoax and NATO drills near Russian border.
Well, what should Russia really do ?
Put weapons to Afghanistan to Taliban, to Yemen to Houthis, use drones and jamm US bases and destroy NATO planes, sink US carrier group in SOuth CHina Sea, shot down every Israeli jet outside of Israeli borders including Golan heights.

      Because diplomatic measures FAILED.

      • Ricky Miller

Yes, it is really painful to watch sometimes. Russian diplomats, working hard with sadness in their face trying to have a conversation with Americans based on rational and reasonable thinking. The Russians keep hoping for give and take, we give ground here and you agree to our needs over there. But Americans keep saying in slang and with hostility: Nope. We want it all. And we need you to be ok with that. But really, who would be? Besides the European Union, of course?

        • hope springs eternal.

Spot on sir! The smug air of superiority that has so become a part of the American political culture.

          • Jens Holm

So goes for the Russians. Others do exact the same. Strange You only notice USA is doing that. Very good filter.

          • Nod

Isn’t the USA or Russia doing imperialism right now.

“”Some even believe we [Rockefeller family] are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as ‘internationalists’ and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure – One World, if you will.If that’s the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it ”
            | David Rockefeller

That cannot be compromised. I do not expect any give on the part of the globalists. It is an all or nothing kind of plan.

        • Tommy Jensen

True. But Russian diplomats also have to realize what works and dont works.
The worst thing bullies know is their own medicine. The Russians should try it.

      • Sinbad2

The way to remove the threat to Russia, without killing millions, maybe billions, is to destroy the American ability to wage war.
A few countries are already damaging the US economy, and if they succeed in reducing the value of the US dollar, to the value of the Rupiah, America will no longer be a threat to the world.
If you want to do your bit, buy some silver or gold, help destroy the dollar and the ability of the savages to wage war.

        • Tommy Jensen

Dreamer. US has 25% of the world economy.

        • Jens Holm

Again You show Your low knowledge level well. Is it a waste trying to learn You anything.

The USA economy is many times bigger then You cabn imagine and an important part of the well integrated world economic.

If USA suffer to much, others will suffer in- and outside USA. Most things are in stockings, where we secure each others.

So we will help USA a lot to keep us up in the same or an improved level. You can see important it is and we do it, when You see the same kind of internal help inside EU. Some countries has for bad reasons not handled their economies well.

But we help them by investments and loans, but also demand for them to correct things to the better.

France is a good example. After many Years of insisting compotition with others were delayed, they have to much mainly Goverment owned production and service ineffective. Besides that they have retired still very productive on stead of creating new jobs.

Even the Frech themselves has see that, so they chosse Makron to clean the house, because the old politicians did not dare that. I see they have a relative hard time a french, but they do clean at least the easy parts well. By that they now again get in foreign investments and probatly will make money for some of the more difficult changes.

USA has to think different. Cheep tricks as the Trump way almost only make fluktuations. They need a better President and a more non egoistic Parlament in both Chambers to see themselves in a wider perspective.

We also have to learn the Chinese to grow a little slower but in a more solid and fait way to the rest of us. They tax us by keeping the Yan too low, so we are a little low payed as well as they cant expect, that they can buy our factories and know how, and we cant buy theirs.

I and much of the world would prefare that done by orgnisations made for it such as IMF and WHO well helped by the smaller ones like fx EU.

          • Nod

Wow. You ad hom him, then babble bullshit.

Kill the Petro dollar, then no one has to buy junk american money with which to buy oil, then the printing press that feeds the military industrial complex stops, then America falls to its knees.

          • Tommy Jensen

            You have some points.

    • Jens Holm

We as Nato dont get a flying camel about the midgets of Russia. When those are agressive, then we as a result of that are united in Nato.

You seemes not even to know, what territorial waters are. Russians certainly do not not. You also dont know where they do that drill. The center is 1500 kilometer from the Norweigian border to Russia.

It make more sense demanding the Russians to move their own bases at Murmansk back to fx Archngelsh. Those are 200 km from Norway of Nato.

Besides that Russia just have had most of their fleet around all Norway to the Baltic Seqa even having Chines guests with them.

But of course that does not bother You at all, because facts like that automaticly are censured away.

      • Tommy Jensen
      • Nod

You are a half witted bully. Russia isn’t doing imperialism dimwit. NATO is. Not sure what your point is, but the imperialism and harm on this planet is American led globalism. Which encircles Russia. While they practice their drills.

Russia stays home, AND BUILDS HYPER-SONIC MISSILES….

  • Rotshilds wants a big war and Russia is like a ostriche burying its head in the sand.
NATO is practicing invasion and destroying Moscow and St.Petersbiug and Putin keeps playing nicely with Western “partners”. I’m really surprised that Russia still tolerates Putin’s approach. It is a suicide. Western provocation needs to be stopped before it is too late.

    • Jesus

What exactly would the Rotschilds gain through a big war in Europe?
This is not the 18th or 19th or early 20th century, where they could finance both sides.
      What would they exactly gain?

      • Tommy Jensen

US, France and UK are techical bankrupt. They can never pay back their public debt around 100% of the GDP. A WW could change this.

        • Jesus

How would a WW change their payment ability? War always generates more debt.

          • Tommy Jensen

The loser pays the bill. Germany still pays today to the Allies. Japan still pays today to USA. Vietnam even they won, pays war reparations to US.
If for example US win a war over China, then the US dont have to meet their responsibilities toward China´s gigantic reserve of US bonds.

The Europeans know, that as soon as they invade Russia, they will get nuked, so invading Russia is not in their interests.
The only people pushing for war are the Americans.
Americans think every problem can be solved by killing and stealing.

      • Tommy Jensen

This is not something we only think, this is something we know.
The dollar raised, the unemployment fall, the growth expections are higher, the jobs are coming back. The Europeans are doing what we are telling them……………………LOL.

provocations are made to be countered.

that’s why those that survive and thrive DON’T respond to provocations.

it’s something that all the blockheads from virginia to tel-aviv have probably gotten by now, but when it comes to zionists agit-props then it’s another subject.

  • Rodney Loder

Every great battle ship went down in the first week at sea in the second world war, the USS Harry S Truman is a floating obsoleted fighting force, the Yanks know that and are attempting a stupid bluff, Russia has much more than a clear advantage at the moment but taking advantage of it would cause political fall out in Germany, so it’s probably best to just ignore this US bluster.

    • Kelli Hernandez

The US military fraught with abuse and waste is in no way prepared to wage war with Russia or China. Read Brian’s article here on the US military true capabilities. An abysmal failure that will get many Americans killed.

      • Rodney Loder

The US Generals are not stupid, ‘Not – So – Mad Dog Mattis’ turned out to be Trump’s best appointment, I like the Guardian article last month.

” Well, according to Bob Woodward’s forthcoming book on the Trump’s White House, Mattis follows the President’s orders very slowly, until Trump forgets he made them, or calms down”.

I hope Trump continues to hold both Senate and Congress next month, the US can never be ungovernable the real government is the Pentagon CIA and FBI and their media sponsors who just take over in a vacuum.

Probably they won’t go to war with Russia and China either, as you say, but they have a more inhuman face.

      • Jens Holm

Its so funny again and again. Its both ways and russians are lowest.

    • Jens Holm

      No, they didnt.

      • Rodney Loder

I though that myself when I read that statement ( all battle ships went under in the first week of their deployment in ww2) it was spoken by the X Australian PM Paul Keating, in 2017, obviously he was speaking figuratively but he didn’t make that clear so he wanted it to be a thinking point so I posted it the way it was presented by Paul Keating .

To check it out just Google Paul Keatings famous statement concerning the value of Aircraft Carriers in modern warfare he asked what sound does a Carrier make in a shooting war and he made the sound ‘glug, glug, glug ‘ meaning like Battle Ships their absolute.

        • Jens Holm

          WW2 is well descriebed.

Aircraftcarriers, airplanes, submarines, torpedoes and probatly sea-mines changed their roles. In stead of being the ultimative heavy armed attack ship against other ships, they in protected mode still could be used well.

They were very good grenade support for invasions to Pacific Islands, The Normandie and many others. A more stationary attitude was at the defence of Leningrad, where they protected well against the germans.

But the original use known fx like the Brittish and German dreadnoughts was outdated. The Germans went into producing many more good subs and smaller vessels like the motortorpedoboat or even down to mini submarines.

As I recall it, the Germans used the sparepart equipment for the west wall defence of them in bunkers.
          …………………..

So whats next: The aircraft carrier. Well maybee. Our corvettes sometimes several among many others to protect them. Thats very expensive and much like a big surface in 3 dimensions and time from subs below to satelites above.

As carrier for transportation. Well, at the Kuwait war USA rentet for almost free danish Maerskline for close to half of all transportation of all equipment. Those big ships are build for only fast transportation and fast loading in and out. They are not armed, but missiles can evaporate everything heavy armed. And there are space above them to put a lot of misiles as well as fighterhelicopters as well as raptors.

Its very complicated to see the future for batling at sea. We now have alot of other choises.

I am sure General Kearing is a war expert according to his credentials.

          • Rodney Loder

Any war is won by the strategical relevance of state of the art weapons, even Stalin made a mistake with jet fight technology by rejecting it for a long time, Hitler did the opposite and embraced it when it was a mere novelty and wasted enormous resources, Hitler could have had 300 Submarines instead of tte Bismarck, and certainly would have starved Britain to death.

Churchill won the war with incendiary bombing, to achieve that he needed large air craft the type that Hitler said were a waste of money..

The Japs believed in raw courage but didn’t take into account the machine gun.

Submarines and mobile land launch platforms are now not only the state of the art, they are the only art that is effective in an totally committed conflict.

First strike is no longer relevant, there is and never can be a Missile Defence capability against Cruise Missiles that reach Mach 6 in 12 seconds from take off and have infinite course variables, Ballistic missiles the same.

The only defence in a missile engagement is a larger land mass than the enemy.

US Generals won’t engage Russia or China Netanyahu is on his lonesome, why do you think the F-35’s are all grounded at the moment?.

If Putin and Xi don’t take advantage of this situation I’m quitting as Jesus Christ, but of course they will and have got I would say about 3 years before the US can catch up, that’s why Trump was installed by the Democrats to give the wild card a go which I said when Hillary threw the election, and I also said on Topex in 2012 that Missiles with variables would be the “Equalizer” because they are so cheap to manufacture and impossible to defend against.

  • Assad must stay (gr8rambino)

everytime they do these stupid war games, they are just showing russia what their strengths and weaknesses are lol

    • John Whitehot

      strenghts?

      • Assad must stay (gr8rambino)

        hahaha

  • Smaug

And the Russian are training with the Belarusians in the arctic, this is not a cause but a symptom of the conflict.
This has also become quite common, though, where we get with local allies and arrange large cooperative training drills that simulate a Russian and allied invasion of our allies.

    • Sinbad2

that simulate a Russian and allied invasion of our allies vassals.

    • Harvey Swinestein

Russia is not carrying out war games in Mexico or Canada bud. How would the US react if they were?

  • Manuel Flores Escobar

Show of force?…. I think show of force is to deploy 2 Yasen class and one Oscar class Sub ( Omsk)..40+40+72 P-800 antiship supersonic missile with 600km range( P-800 deployed in Sub)..these 3 Sub can sink the entire NATO fleet!

  • Peter Moy

Russia shouldn’t worry about this supposed NATO (US led lapdogs and little worm hangers on) exercise scare tactic. These mumbling, bumbling fools couldn’t even defeat the New York City Police Department in a no-holds bar ghetto fight.

  • Sinbad2

I wonder who is paying for this?

    • Tommy Jensen

      You pay. We pay.

  • Tommy Jensen

Russia is weak, their economy is in tatters and their military consists of old rusty iron and a few hypersonics they are very proud of.
The NATO force of 45000 troops in N-Norway could bulldoze entire Russia in 14 days without problems with back up from US Triad systems and the world would finally have peace and freedom.
