Military Situation In Southeastern Idlib Following Second Liberation Of Saraqib By Syrian Army (Map Update)

Click to see the full-size image

On March 2, Syrian government troops retook the town of Saraqib from Turkish-led forces in eastern Idlib. According to pro-government sources, the advance came amid an intense bombing campaign by the Syrian Air Force and the Russian Aerospace Forces. Syrian and Russian airstrikes were also reported in Nayrab and Sarmin.

At the same time, an intense fighting between the Syrian Army and Turkish-led forces erupted near Kafr Nubl. Al-Qaeda members backed up by the Turkish Army briefly entered the town, but then were forced to retreat after a series of clashes with Syrian troops.

This looks a little like a back and forth. The turks advance in one region, the syrians in another then they switch places and regain the lost teritory. Hopefully the SAA will be able to gain the advantage and end HTS

” The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) sent a large convoy of reinforcements to the Idlib Governorate last night after a series of attacks by the Turkish military killed several personnel.
According to a field report from northwestern Syria, the Syrian Army reinforcements reached the southeastern countryside of the Idlib Governorate during the twilight hours this morning.
The report said the Syrian Army reinforcements reached the area with modern military equipment that will be used in accordance with developments in the field conditions in the region.
It would add that it should shift the balance of the battle after the air defense systems entered the area to confront the Turkish Air Force’s warplanes.
The arrival of the Syrian Army reinforcements to the southeastern region of Idlib comes shortly after the Russian military shipped a large amount of armored and technical vehicles to Syria to help the government forces in their battle in the northwestern part of the country.”…. AMN News

This sounds like the Republican guard is getting involved in the fight now.

      • Lee Vanderheiden

Wouldn’t that be something. A game changer definitely.

    • Free man

“…it should shift the balance of the battle after the air defense systems entered the area to confront the Turkish Air Force’s warplanes.” – The SAA cannot beat the Turkish army. There is only a diplomatic solution. Let’s hope that the meeting between Putin and Erdogan will bring that solution. If not the SAA is going to lose a lot of soldiers.

      • Lee Vanderheiden

Bullsh*t. A diplomatic solution? For terrorists? Who beheads Christians because they are infidels? Beheads 12 year old Syrian boys? Terrorized the nation for years. For years! The SAA may lose a lot of soldiers, true, but they will never let their country be “shared” by Al Qaeda, by foreign invaders. Territorial integrity. Assad made that quite clear to the Russians. The Russians’ mission in Syria is to expel Al Qaeda. Lavrov made this quite clear. Erdogan’s interference is unfortunate but he cannot bully his neighbour to do what he wants. So no ceasefire! No diplomatic settlement! Out with Turkey and his monsters.

        • Free man

In theory you are right but in reality you are unluckily wrong.

          • Ronald

You just call yourself a Free man, Syrians will be free.

          • Free man

            Syria is a broken country.
More wars won’t help it. Rebuilding by Russia will help it.

        • Zi Zo

So you mean in Idlib you have only terrorists? 4.000.000 terrorists?

          • @Inc2Get

What? Sense when is there 4 million people in Idlib??? F’cking mainstream media idiotic fake news. They always lie. There is approximately 1.1-1.5 million syrians inside Idlib. Many of whom have already fled. The jihadis are estimated to be around 50-80k. The rest are civilians. Time and time again, Russia asked the “moderate ones” to seperate themselves from the terrorists but they refused or could not do that. Why? Mark my words, Idlib will be liberated, a large buffer zone around Turkish border will be established to house civilians while the war drags on. In the end of 2020, Syria will have liberated Idlib. The civilians will return.

          • Vollkrassmann

4 million inhabitants in Idleb? :))))))) You made my day.
Seriously: When the real figure is between 1 and 1,4 m real Idlebians, the rest must be some armed people from some shthle who are there for being allowed to do cruel things on behalf of the prophet….

          • FlorianGeyer

Zi Zo uses a jewish made calculator to count the civilians, Vollkrassmann.

“So no ceasefire! No diplomatic settlement! Out with Turkey and his monsters.” – You were wrong.

        |f im SAA i will this men to the frontline putting them on trucks
so that turkey will bomb their own men

      • Vollkrassmann

Diplomatic solution? Could only be something like “Idleb will be Turkey controlled area for once and forevever to keep the beheaders and Alquaida terrorists there until they might be needed once more in the next showcase of Turkeydom”. Or something similar…
This would be the diplomatic way of Turkey’s aggression on a neighboring country that does not fit into the imaginations of a fanatic Sunni agenda.
The Turkeys (in their obvious attempt to save terrorists) have to leave as well as the AlQaida and their brothers of murder & fanatism. Dead or alive. No more ceasefire, no more diplomatic blabla. Period.

        • Wahid Algiers

You are right, but dead sounds better than alive.

      • gustavo

SAA alone can not fight Turkey and its terrorists, but Hezbolah-Iran-Russia ground forces and (mainly) Russia air force make it totally different.

        • Wahid Algiers

The since years bleeding SAA and its special forces make a very good job. But in bad times one needs a good friend or more of them.

      • igybundy

If you are saying Syria cant take back hatay, thats true.. But this is inside syria and a danger to their largest cities.. Its not a choice to not take back Idlib.. Its an existential threat… I think Syria will throw everything they have to get it under control..

You think Turkey wants to lose thousands of soldiers to keep some land from another country that is not even productive and a huge drain on it?

    • FlorianGeyer
  • Porc Halal

It looks to me that after the killing of aproximately 36 islamist turkorats there is a non combat agreement between jihadist turkish army and russian army… but what I donno understand is why the russian army does not support the syrian army with the necessary AA military equipment to combat and anihilate the jihadi turkish military aviation. Also MANPADs can be provided as well to the syrian army so the jihadist turkish paper planes can be downed with easy…

  • ColinNZ

The Russian leadership realises it made a tragic mistake when it ordered a standown of it’s military operations and air defenses in Idleb. Erdoghan took immediate advantage of the ceasefire to launch a devastating drone & artillery attack on Syrian & allied forces and hardware. Their mistake must be corrected and Erdoghan’s despicable deception must be punished. The Russian Federation has stepped up it’s assistance to SAA & allies and recently sent its top recon aircraft to Idlib. The Bear has been provoked and the gloves are off.

    • Porc Halal

This is what the turkorats are doing for centuries now, deceipting and back stabing…it is in their nature!!…never trust a turk and most important, make sure you do not have a turk behind you so he can attack you cowardly by surprise…

They didn’t just stand down, they declined to inform their “partners” that a window of vulnerability would now be open. Syrian officers and units were suddenly ambushed from above without warning, while believing themselves safe because of Russia’s control of the airspace. I mean, who does something like that, and why?

Impressive counterstroke by the SAA with clear support from allies including Hezbollah fighting shoulder to shoulder with SAA on the ground and Russia in the air. The issue as pointed out by DV28L is if there is sufficient capability to take territory without weakening other parts of the front such that gains in one area result in losses elsewhere. I expressed this concern before that SAA has not got Defense in depth or sufficient highly capable military forces to prevent Turkish intervention turning the tide in the long run.

I recommend Israeli News Live (by the way, the site is very critical of Israeli policies), they live streamed March 1, Turkey shoots down two Syrian jets. It states that Iran has threatened Turkey with ballistic missile strikes that may be launched without notice if Turkey does not back down. There is also reports of uprisings in the vicinity of Damascus which is linked to Israeli incitement – if anyone has info on this let us know.

I have also learned that NATO is providing intel on Syrian military positions and movements to Turkey. Also, US has moved a carrier strike group into Eastern Mediterranean. Erdogan and Assad are definitely escalating the situation and the players are positioning themselves, setting the stage for rapid escalation drawing in many into a wide regional war that could blow up into WW3. This is the closest we have come to the brink so let us see if cooler heads prevail, or, if the intent is to start WW3, this is perhaps their best opportunity yet…

    • George King

You must mean the decapitated heads will continue to roll until the transnational criminal cabal and its terrorist proxy armies are flushed from any and all nation states. WW III has been raging since 9/11 and before, there is no doubt. The question is will it lead to nuclear exchange if those responsible are not annihilated from any positions of power and or influence.

The Iranian regime is a coward.
They did not even publicly condemn the Turkish action.

      • Lee Vanderheiden

The Iranians bomb the American bases in Iraq and you call them cowards? If they haven’t yet condemned the Turkish action they will. You can count on that.

      • tom

The Iranians are the exact opposite of cowards.

A coward talks big and does nothing. (Maybe you can think of a nation like that).

A brave man says little, but acts when necessary.

“Condemning” is a pathetic excuse for doing nothing.

    • Lee Vanderheiden

I don’t think sending a missile into Turkey is wise. Article 5 can then be invoked and NATO has every right to protect Turkey and to bomb Iran. Turkey deserves it, but not wise.

      • tom

Washington has already had its golden excuse to bomb Iran, and they chickened out. The Iranians hit the biggest US air base in Iraq and (at least) injured scores of Americans. And the USA didn’t lift a finger to strike back.

Because they knew that if they did, all their other bases would be blown away – with real warheads.

    • FlorianGeyer

The problem with your statement is that any Iranian attack within Turkey that was not retaliatory in international law would be a wet dream for the Israelis.
This is because the US and NATO would have an excuse to declare war on Iran.

Turkish drones hit a point where the regime troops gathered in Sarakib.

    • Wahid Algiers

Turkish faked. Like many things of these similar jews.

  • S Melanson

I have reviewed multiple sources and I want to qualify reports that Saraqib has been retaken by SAA. I would say that most of Saraqib have been taken but the city is still contested. For example, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported the fall of Saraqib to the SAA but also reported that the SAA continues to bombard parts of Saraqib to prevent renewed push by Turkish backed forces to reverse the situation.

The status of Saraqib should become clearer in the next 24 hours.

    • @Inc2Get

Saraqib main city is liberated but there are villages around the city or small towns that are still under jihadi controll. Also, SAA hasn’t fully secured it yet which takes a couple of hours. Hopefully, by the end of this day, they will have secured it.

  • Death of turkish pigs! :)))))))

    • Lee Vanderheiden

What do you mean “a meat grinder”? Once liberated and the area around it secured, there would only need some soldiers to remain to ward off any enemies that should happen to get through the outlying areas. With air support that might prove difficult.

      • Free man

Saraqeb and Kafar Nabl are two key cities on the M5.
If Jihadists fail to recover these cities , Turkish President Erdogan will go empty-handed to thursday negotiate with President Putin.

  • Lee Vanderheiden

The video “The night advance on Saraqib” says it all. The SAA (and Russians) are not going to let their previously won territories go back to the terrorists. The highways WILL be opened! You can hear and feel and see the determination in the video. Congratulations to the Syrian Arab Army, the RAF and the SAF in their retaking of Saraqib. If they can keep this up more successes will surely follow. The Russians MUST commit to success also.

I hope this war will stop as soon as possible! Since 9 years, childrens, women get killed, by wapens produced by US, Russia, and many European countries tries. Whit killing people you don’t create a solution.

    • Lee Vanderheiden

What would you do if your country was invaded by head choppers? Religious fanatics who bomb your cities, rape and kill women and children. Murder anyone who doesn’t submit to their religion? THAT is inhuman. Syria was one of the most peaceful countries in the world before foreigners decided to invade their country. It looks like the end of the war is near though. A couple more areas of the country to be cleared of terrorists and other invaders. Yes, killing people does sometimes create a solution.
