Militants based in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib have escalated their drone attacks in a bid to provoke the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies.
The escalation began on late on July 2, when two makeshift armed drones were launched from the region at Russia’s Hmeimim Air Base in the southern countryside of Lattakia. Both drones were intercepted by Russian air defenses. No casualties or material losses were reported as result of the failed attack.
The attack was blamed on al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib. The terrorist group manufactures and operates several type of suicide drones.
On July 21 in an apparent response to the drone attack, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out on a series of airstrikes the towns of Jdayde and Yacubiyeh, which are located in the western countryside of Idlib. Five people, including suspected members of HTS, were allegedly killed in the airstrikes.
On the same day, HTS and its Turkish-backed allies shelled several government-held towns around Greater Idlib. As a result of the shelling, two civilians were killed and five others were wounded in the towns of al-Suqaylabiyah, al-Baraka, Nobol Elkhatib and Jurin in the northwestern Hama countryside.
The SAA responded on the same day by shelling different parts of Greater Idlib. Two militants of the al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al-Tawhid, a close ally of HTS, were killed as a result of an artillery strike on the town of Fatterah in the southern Idlib countryside.
July 24 witnessed a new escalation. Two makeshift suicide drones, which were launched from Greater Idlib, targeted the opening ceremony of a symbolic church carrying the name of “Hagia Sophia” in the town of al-Suqaylabiyah in the northern countryside Hama.
Only one of the drones exploded upon impact. The drone attack killed a man and wounded at least 12 other people.
The Hagia Sophia church in al-Suqaylabiyah is a miniature replica of the original historic church in the Turkish city of Istanbul, which was converted to a mosque by Ankara in 2020. The attack on the symbolic church was likely carried out by HTS, possibly with indirect support from Turkey.
On July 25, the SAA responded to the deadly drone attack by shelling a position of the Turkish military near the town of Deir Saman in the western Aleppo countryside with rockets. However, no losses were reported.
The recent attacks by HTS and its Turkish-backed allies threaten the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago. The militants’ use of drones could eventually force the SAA and its allies to resume large-scale operations in the region.
Assad Russia and Iran must leave Syria. The Ottoman TAF and the Syrians will takeover Syria. Russia can’t do nothing about it because it is in war with the Ukrops in Ukraine.
Stronkkkk!! 🤣 🦃
VERY FUNNY little midget minion isis flip,90% SYRIANS IN SYRIA ARE WITH ASSAD + RUSSIA, lgbtq are losers, fkn drr mi assflogg, all you degenerates know best is destroying genuine freedom, and you wont have anything in life because you poofs of the century only bark and bark never could build!
Drones are a form of warfare where the combatants have very low risk to themselves.
The same for jets, artillery and missiles.
They probably bought them on the black market, courtesy of the US of A via Ukrainia, if they didn’t get them straight from the horse’s mouth.
Are you paid by hay for this.
Why on earth doesn’t SAA and allies finish the the job in Idleb after all this time ? Also why is SAA fighting on the side of SDF against Turkey when SDF is allowing the US to occupy and steal oil/ wheat. I don’t get it.
A. They made a deal – Russia, Iran, and Turk-isis-stan. The problem is if you push them they enter Turk-isis-stan where they belong, but that cause Turk-isis to invade NE-Syria where Kurds hide under rocks.
Now ask yourself, do you want a weak force that fought against ISIL, or do you want a stronger country to take over them and was part of the creation of ISIL?
It is not as easy as you might think it is. SAA is now holding areas where it use to be Kurds-US hold areas. Look at a map you understand.
We got ISIL’s main force blocked, and SAA is taking the ground where SDF use to be…
I can’t send you a link but just look up Wikipedia’s map of Syria – who control where.
SAA needs to deal with Turk-isis-stan ONLY, not ISIL or SDF. They can’t do anything at all, their main problem is Turk-isis.
One of the best comments I hv saw in my life
It make sence, but You are wrong.
Half of the population is not even in the Country. None of them support Assads as well as the rest.
Some kind of fresh air can only be there if Assads as well as Erdogan is not there. By that USA as well as Iran and hesbollah has no reason to stay there.
By that Israel will make no routine bombardments as well.
Look at this map: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/68/Syrian_Civil_War_map.svg
Red: Syrian government. Yellow: SDF. Orange: SAA+SDF. Green/Dark Green: Turk-isis-stan and yanquis. White: ISIL.
It is SO important for you to understand most of the MAIN cities in Syria are under the control of the Syrian government.
The matter is the resources’ control not the cities although they are important
Thats right. Its about ressouces, bajonets and propaganda.
But that a relative. Those main cituies has about half of the population and sometimes less. In the country sides so many villages has been not exiting years too.
You totally ignore the change in where people live and who lives there.
And what about the many refugee camps.
Nice map. Its highly incorrect. So much of the Assad land is contested and should be stribed or dottet.
I can compare Greenland the biggest Island on the earth. Its like the Syrian deserts. The 60.000 in Greenland only posses corners of it.
And do Assads posses the Dara area. Yes they do when they are there hardly armed and some of the Assads are killed and they revenge.
Mapmakers like that should have stripes and dots in their own behinds.
You might recall a few years ago that SAA did just this and suffered horrendous casualties for very little land.
Thats right. They only has soldiers for keep. Others are in the same position. Only SDF has taen more land by taken the Tabqa Dam, Raqqa and east of that. It was a small plus but better then none.
A start would be You read about it.
RT: “Russia and Turkey to discuss ‘military-technical cooperation’ – Kremlin”
“Military-technical cooperation will be on the agenda when Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, meet in Sochi. This was the response by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday, when asked about Erdogan’s revelation that Moscow had an eye on Turkey’s Bayraktar combat drones, which are currently supplied to Ukraine.”
Remember Erdogay saying Russia wants to buy Turk-isis shit drones? That Ukraine is not even using anymore. “Military-technical cooperation”.
Like I said Erdogay is rtded like Biden (that rtded was doing a PR for their shit drone still), and what do we know about Iran? They are sending “stuff” to Russia.
Propaganda output is down at SF lately…heheheh
