A visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Germany to meet Chancellor Angela Merkel was marked by a strange event. Merkel was filmed visibly trembling at an official ceremony on June 18. She stood next to Zelensky, whom she was welcoming to her office building with military honours.
Asked by reporter about the situation at a news conference about 90 minutes later, Merkel smiled: “I’ve drunk at least three glasses of water and so I’m doing fine.”
Ahead of the meeting with Merkel, Zelensky said that he expects the support in the conflict with Russia.
“Chancellor Merkel is a strong personality; she has indisputable authority and extensive experience. The Ukrainians hope that Angela Merel, as powerful European and global influence, will help my state to counteract the challenges, which we face,” Zelensky said.
The president also noted that Kiev needs aid in the structure reforming and energy sector claiming that Nord Stream 2 may harm the energy security of Ukraine and Europe.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon announced that the US will provide Ukraine with $250 million worth of military equipment, training and support. According to the Pentagon statement, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be supplied with sniper rifles, grenade launchers, counter-battery radar systems, night vision equipment and communication devices. This move will will bring total US security assistance to Ukraine to $1.5 billion since 2014.
