This map provides a general look at the presence of ISIS cells in eastern Syria. ISIS units are still capable of operating in a few formally liberated areas and are using the US-occupied area of at-Tanf as as safe haven to avoid Syrian Army attacks when they need this.

I keep saying it over and over, just repeat the same process they did the first time.
last year between oct and dec the SAA placed a ring of light armour around this exclusion zone and the Russians flew sorties around it day and night, nothing got in and nothing got out, by the end of dec Putin had announced that all of southern Syria was Isis free, 2 months total. Of course we all know now that was premature, but it did work the first time, this time it would be even easier since the Iraqi/Syrian border here is secured already, unlike last year.
The real question is this, why don’t the Russians and SAA do the same thing now, the Rubkan refugees may be a factor this time, they’re in the process of negotiating a relocation deal at the moment and that’s maybe the reason they’re delaying a repeat of a proven strategy. Or maybe there’s another reason, one that meant they could actually put up with this base being here for just a little longer, not much longer, just a little, like until after the Kurdish problem is sorted out. mmm.
