ISIS cells continue to operate against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and their affiliates in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
Late on July 9, gunmen believed to be members of the terrorist group shot and killed Khalid Saleh al-Dubisi in the town of al-Kasrah, according to the Hawar News Agency.
Al-Dubaisi was a member of al-Kasrah’s local council which is a part of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), the executive wing of the SDF. AANES officials were targeted by ISIS cells on several occasions in the past.
In a related development, ISIS news agency, Amaq, on July 10, released photos showing the execution of a civilian who was accused of spying for the SDF.
Amaq claimed in a brief post that the execution took place in the town of al-Jurazi al-Gharbi. The victim has not been identified, yet.
The SDF and its main backer, the US-led coalition, conduct operations against ISIS cells in southeastern Deir Ezzor on a regular basis. Nevertheless, the terrorist group’s influence in the region continues to grow.
ISIS has been taking advantage of the growing tensions between Arab locals and the Kurdish-led SDF to spread its radical ideology in southeastern Deir Ezzor. The group is also using assassinations and executions as a mean to terrorize its opponents in the region.
