On January 28, a VBIED of ISIS targeted a key position of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) around the town of Gharanij in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside, according to the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq. The source said that fifteen SDF fighters were killed and two vehicles of the US-backed force were destroyed in the VBIED attack.
In the last 48 hours ISIS conducted several attacks against the SDF around Gharanij town that was supposedly fully secured by the SDF on January 24. Amaq reported on January 27, that five fighters of the SDF were killed and injured after ISIS targeted their position with an ATGM.
Barq al-Shaitat, one of the SDF’s Arab units acknowledged on January 26, that Gharanij was not fully secured and said that several VBIEDs of ISIS were still around and inside the town. However, it appears that the US-backed force failed to address these threats while securing the village.
So far, ISIS has successfully maintained most of its positions near the border with Iraq, while the US-backed forces have failed to make any serious gains for the third month in a row.
