On July 3, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq – ‘Ashab al-Kahf announced that its drones had conducted a reconnaissance mission over the US embassy and nearby Union III base in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
In a statement, the pro-Iranian group said that the operation started at 7:50 p.m. local time on July 2 and lasted for 30 minutes.
Iraqi sources reported at the time hearing alarm sirens at Baghdad’s highly-secured Green Zone, where the US embassy and Union III base are located. ‘Ashab al-Kahf noted in its statement that troops from the US Marine Corps are currently present at Union III.
‘Ashab al-Kahf said that its drones bypassed US radars, air-defense systems and electronic warfare means during the daring reconnaissance mission.
“This operation and the operations that will follow in the future come within the right of legitimate response to what the American occupation aircraft are doing in violation of Iraqi sovereignty and spying on the Iraqi people,” the group’s statement reads.
‘Ashab al-Kahf rose to prominence after the assassination of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, and Commander of Iran’s Quds Force, Qassim Soleimani by the US more than two years ago.
In May, the group released aerial footage of the US embassy and Union III base which were taken by one of its reconnaissance drone.
The US embassy and Union III base were attacked with rockets and drones on several occasions in the last few years. ‘Ashab al-Kahf announcement indicates that the two facilities have not been properly secured, yet.
