On November 19, the Directorate of Military Intelligence in the Iraqi Ministry of Defense uncovered an improvised rocket launcher concealed in the back of a truck in the northern province of Nineveh.

The launcher was found in the area of Musharrifah to the northwest of Mosul city following several explosions which were apparently caused by a failed launch.

“Army forces managed to seize a vehicle carrying seven rocket launch tubes and three rockets, which was intended to target sites in Nineveh province … security forces dealt with the launcher and the rockets according to appropriate procedures,” the Directorate of Military Intelligence said in a statement.

The launcher was apparently loaded with Arash-4 122 mm rockets made by Iran’s Defense Industries Organization. This type has a range of 40 kilometers and is armed with a HE-FRAG [High Explosive – Fragmentation] warhead.

According to Iraqi sources, the target of the failed attack was a Turkish military base located near the town of Zaylkan in Bashiqa district. A rocket attack targeted the base on November 7.

The side responsible for the failed rocket attack remains unclear. Iranian-backed forces and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party may have been behind the attempt.
