More details have appeared on the recent delivery of 39 T-90C/SK main battle tanks (MBT) to Iraq from Russia. According to videos released by the Iraqi military, the 35th Brigade of the 9th Armoured Division of the Iraqi Armed Forces is now fully armed with T-90C main battle tanks.
The T-90C MBT is an export version of the Russian-T90A MBT. The T-90SK is a command and control version of the MBT. Servicemen and officers of the 35th Brigade passed the training to use T-90C/SK MBTs under a supervision of Russian specialists.
All the remaining US-made М1А1М Abrams MBTs were transfered from the 35th Brigade to the 34th Brigade of the 9th Armoured Division. According to experts, the 34th Brigade may now be the only formation of the Iraqi military armed with US-made М1А1М Abrams MBTs.
Previously, the Iraqi military received 152 М1А1 Abrams MBTs from the US. However, according to reports in Iraqi media and existing video and photo evidence, over a half of these battle tanks have been lost, destroyed or damaged during clashes with ISIS terrorists across the country.
Russia and Iraq made a contract on the delivery of T-90C/SK MBTs in 2017. The Russian battle tanks’ manufacturer Uralvagonzavod revealed in the same year that at least 46 T-90C/SK MBTs will be delivered to Iraq. However, this is only the first batch of the pre-agreed number.
While details and sum of the Russian-Iraqi contract is not revealed, it, according to Russian sources, can iclude “hundreds” of MBTs.
