On March 11, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani launched the production line of the Yasin training jet which was developed by the Iran Aviation Industries Organization (IAIO).
A new version of the training jet was showcased during the launch ceremony, which was also attended by the Commander of the Iranian Air Force Brigadier General Hamid Vahedi and other senior officials.
“Among our main concerns is training fighter pilots, because the process is of paramount significance and requires training aircraft in different classes,” Brig. Gen. Ashtani said during the ceremony. “The homegrown characteristics of the training jet make it suitable to be utilized for close air support (CAS) of military aircraft” against hostile targets as well, the Iranian defense chief said.
The minister added that most of the components and avionics of the training jet were made in Iran, expressing hope that it will perform assigned tasks and prove effective in reducing training duration and improving training quality.
From his side, Brig. Gen. Vahedi said that the Yasin will help overcome difficulties facing the training of Iranian fighter pilots.
“Previously, our fighter pilots used to be trained abroad. The first sector affected as a result of the sanctions against our country was this field, which created difficulties for us in terms of training,” the air force commander said. “Utilization of the new aircraft will make training duration more complete and shorter.”
The new version of the Yasin features several design changes compared to the first prototype, which was unveiled during a ceremony at Shahid Noje Air Base in the province of Hamadan in 2019.
The Yasin, which has a wingspan of 10,4 meters, is powered by two OWJ single-shaft turbojet engines, Iranian copies of the American General Electric J85-GE-21B. The jet has a maximum speed of Mach 0,8, a ferry range of 1,200 kilometers, a service ceiling of 11 kilometers and an endurance of 90 minutes.
Iran has been working nonstop to develop its military industries in response to the sanctions imposed by the United States and other nations.
