to be honest , it’s also the fault and cowardness of Yanukovich , who did nothing before Maidan to stop the regime change process of the US/NATO and all the foreign meddling. Russians are merciful to foreigners in need of help, and they are not cruel to brothers or the unfortunate. They are not merciful to invaders. Some of the French army was taken captive or spared, that was the exception, most were killed without mercy. The Germans were treated the same when they came next century. Russians are without mercy in defense of the rodina. None of the Nazis who attack into Bryansk, Saratov, Pskov, or Crimea make it out alive, they are given no quarter and killed to the last, surrenders not accepted. I think the option mentioned by Elgar might be very possible. Ukraine will lost some parts but in big picture cut ties to Russia and join to NATO and EU. Putin will face strategical blunder. He managed to unite Europe and USA. He might have damaged even China’s Belt And Road project.
