The Israeli military said on August 25 that the alleged drone attack from Syrian on its positions was orchestrated by Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) General Qasem Soleimani.
“Soleimani commanded an attack of killer drones on Israel. Iranian Quds operatives flew to the Damascus International Airport with drones and explosives, and continued to an Iranian base in Syria to prepare for an attack on Israel,” the Israeli military said on Twitter, adding: “An attack that never happened … We attacked their base.”
The Israeli military also released a satellite image of the positions its warplanes struck in the late hours of August 24. The positions are located in the vicinity of the town of Aqraba south of the Syrian capital, Damascus.
IRGC commander Mohsen Rezaee denied that any Iranian position was hit. However, Lebanese sources reported that several fighters of Hezbollah were killed in the Israeli airstrikes.
The situation appears to be heading to a military confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah. The Lebanese group and its ally Iran had vowed to respond to any attack on their troops in Syria.
