On February 2 eve, al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) claimed that its militants had recaptured the town of Zitan in the southwestern Aleppo countryside from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies.
The army imposed control of the town in the early morning. Pro-government sources are yet to confirm HTS’ claims or deny them.
Iba’a, HTS’ news network, reported that the group’s militants captured two battle tanks and an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) inside Zitan. These claims remain unverified.
In the last few days, HTS and other terrorist groups claimed that they recaptured many areas in the southwest Aleppo. Most of these claims turned out to be nothing but propaganda in the end.
If HTS’ claims are true, the SAA and its allies will most likely recapture Zitan within a few days. The army and its allies have a large strike force in southwest Aleppo.
