On June 29, Brigadier General Yahya Sare’e, a spokesperson for the Armed Forces of the Houthi-led Yemeni government, held a press briefing summing up the recent advances of Houthi (Ansar Allah) forces against Saudi-backed formations in the provinces of Marib and Bayda.
According to Brigadier General Sare’e, Houthi forces turned pro-Saudi fighters back in the areas of Qaniyah and Al-Abdiyah capturing over 400km2 over the past 11 days. Saudi-backed forces left behind lots of weapons, ammunition, and a number of vehicles.
An especially intense fighting took place in the western part of Marib province. Pro-Saudi sources claim that coalition airstrikes and forces of the Saudi-backed Aden-based government inflicted heavy losses on the Houthis there. However, they provide little visual evidence to confirm these claims.
The Houthis are still unable to reach the Marib provincial capital. Despite the victorious claims, the reality on the ground still remains quite different to those presented by statements of Houthi forces. Nonetheless, their offensive operations demonstrate that if the situation develops in the same direction and the Saudi-led coalition continues to crumble under the pressure of internal contradictions, Houthi forces will have all chances to retake all the Marib province from Saudi-backed forces.
