On January 15, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out at least four airstrikes on the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.

All four airstrikes targeted the outskirts of the town of al-Bara in the southern Idlib countryside. Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib, and its allies maintain large forces in this area which is considered the main frontline with the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).

The Russian airstrikes were likely a response to recent violations of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than year ago.

HTS and its allies violated the ceasefire on several occasions in the last few days. On January 13, an SAA soldiers was killed in an indirect fire attack that targeted military positions located near the town of Urem Al-Kubra in the western countryside of Aleppo.

The Turkish military, who maintains more than 60 positions in Greater Idlib, has been doing nothing to reinforce the ceasefire agreement.

Despite the unstable situation in Greater Idlib, the SAA and its allies do not appear to be planning to launch a large-scale operation in the region anytime soon.
