During the Zapad-2021 (West-2021) military exercises, Russian advanced models of weapons and military equipment are tested.
The exercises are held from September 10 to 16 at nine training grounds on the territory of Russia, in the Baltic Sea and at five training grounds in Belarus. Up to 200 thousand servicemen, about 80 military aircraft and helicopters, up to 760 units of military equipment – including 290 battle tanks, 240 guns, multiple launch rocket systems and mortars, as well as up to 15 warships are taking part in the exercises.
The Uran-9 and Nerekhta combat robots were the centerpieces of the recent part of Zapad-2021. They were used for the first time alongside the human soldiers.
Uran-9 robots hit the shelters of the imaginary enemy from a distance of three and five kilometers, using the Ataka missile systems. The Nerekhta robots conducted reconnaissance and attacked the targets with machine guns and grenade launchers.
New attack drones from the Lastochka (Swallow) complex were used by the Russian military during the main part of the Zapad-2021 exercise at the Mulino training ground in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
As part of the reconnaissance fire complex, the strike unmanned aerial vehicles Inohodec (Orion), Swallow and Orlan-10 were used. The UAVs provided cover, using the latest 120-mm guided mines Gran, with a laser homing head.
Another novelty at the Zapad-2021 exercises is the engineering system of remote mining “Zemledelie” (Agriculture).
The military for the first time tested a new method of joint use of the engineering reconnaissance and fire “Agriculture” complex and mobile groups of heavy flamethrower systems TOS-1A “Solntsepek”.
Iskander ballistic missiles were also launched during the exercises.
Units of the 31st Separate Guards airborne Assault Brigade, supported by Ka-52 and Mi-28N helicopters, carried out an assault landing from the external suspension of the Mi-8 of fortifications, equipment, artillery, and ammunition during the draw of the main stage of the Zapad-2021.
During the joint drills, the Russian Armed Forces demonstrated to their colleagues from Belarus a new helicopter “carousel” tactic.
