Finland May Not Wait For Sweden To Join NATO

Illustrative Image

After Sweden lost its chance to find a compromise with Ankara, Finland changed its opinion on the procedure of its accession to NATO club. On January 24, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto claimed that the country may consider its application for NATO membership without reference to Sweden’s application. Helsinki had previously insisted on applying together with Stockholm.

At the same time, the Finnish Foreign Minister clarified that it was too early to take a position on this issue.

“Finland may have to reconsider its application for simultaneous NATO membership with Sweden if Sweden’s application is postponed for a longer period,” Haavisto said in an interview with Yle. The number one option for the security of Finland and Sweden is still that the countries strive to join NATO simultaneously,” the Foreign Minister said.

NATO member states signed protocols on the accession of Finland and Sweden to the North Atlantic Council on July 5, 2022. Sweden and Finland will join NATO as soon as all NATO member states ratify the protocols. To date, out of 30 NATO member countries, Sweden and Finland’s they have not yet been ratified by Turkey and Hungary.

Turkey blocked the accession process, demanding that the Scandinavian countries declare Kurdish organizations terrorist and extradite persons accused of terrorism, as well as lift bans on arms supplies to Ankara.

Amid the diplomatic protests, Swedish activists took initiative and staged the provocations against Ankara. Anti-Turkish protests broke out in Sweden; while protests against Sweden took place in Turkey. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on January 23 that Sweden should not wait for Turkey to support the country’s membership in NATO.

However, as NATO has to demonstrate its unity in resistance to the alleged Russian threat, NATO, Finland and Sweden continue to prove that there is still hope and some positive results in the process.

I cannot undestand why Finland and Sweden want to join NATO and take the risk of being in front line in the war coming between the US and Russia. Why those people are willing to be used as canon fonder for the benefit of Washington ?

I don’t understand either, why that?

HelterSkelter

Who knows, but in neither in country will they put it to a vote. So the people get no say in the matter.

pavi

This is longshot: I do understand, because I’m a finn. Russophobia has been carefully build in here and it is very strong. It is originated in the middle of the 19th century when independence movement woke up. It was a tool to start to wake up people for independence.

When indepence came as a result of Russian revolution, we fought a very bloody civil war and the whites won that war with aid of germans and hatered towards communism was driving factor to form our society. We were very closely allied with germans and we even selected a german king for us, which luckily didn’t proceed any further.

pavi

This hatred was amplified greatly when soviet union wanted grab some land in the vicinity of St. Petersburg. When diplomatic solution for this land exchange failed, soviets launched winter war 1939 and those lands were taken by force. During cold war we had to live quite quietely to not annoy soviets and we did it. We had practical and good relations but beneath the surface the hate survived extremely well. When soviet union collapsed, new winds started to blow. There were talking to join EU and we did join it. It was allowed to talk more freely about cold war times and our press surely didn’t left this opportunity to unused.

pavi

After 2007, Putin became source of all evil on earth, as we all know, and since then there has not been newspaper without something propaganda towards Russia. When finland signed sort of deal with NATO to use its land for moving NATO troops in case of war things spinned off totally. Hybrid war centre was incorporated, where western propaganda officers started to brew bullshit about russian agression daily and loudly. When SMO was launched, our government didn’t even bothered to ask from people by voting to join the NATO. They just told to us that majority of finnish want to join it, and application was put in. Ofcourse, majority of my friends and relatives cheered up, but very few of them are thinking, that our constitution obligates us to defend our country and more than 80% of males are went through military service.

We have 1300 km common border with Russia in the vicinity of St. Petersburg and main base of Russian nuclear submarines. We are very usefull cannon fodder for NATO to fight russians to last finn. As one finnish cartoonist pointed out one of its works; “Finland is like a stray dog. Always looking for new Master!”

Matias

Very popular myth Kremlin leaders and Russian propaganda is spreading.

pavi

there is no myth about common border and in a case of conflict between NATO and Russia we are on war stage, whether we like or not due to common border, if we are part of NATO.

Matias

Cannon fodder nonsense is pro Russia propaganda. Every small country must have reliable friends. Russian leader blundered his own reliability.

Pavi

Reliable friends? How did this appeared for ukrainians? I bet that agreeing with Minsk 2 would be quite a bit better deal than what they are getting right now. If you are as ignorant bullshitter as I gues you are, please, do not response any further.

Bonk

So in a nutshell, that was the idea all along. Accept Finland that borders Russia into NATO. Sweden was just there to soften the blow (at least Sweden won’t be accepted). Childs tricks.

It was not “the idea” the western elites allways operate with different layers of plans. Try how far we can go and settle for the possible.

1. Russia crushes ukraine = sanctions and support of terror attacks and uprisings in occupied territory

2. Russia takes a part and stops like in crimea and ossetia/ abhasia = the west takes the rest and transforms it into a fortress and after that is done starts shooting over the border while pretending nothing has happened

3. russia is pushed out of donbas but not crimea = kill or drive out all donbas people in the former dpr/ lpr (croatian solution) destroy the bridge to crimea and fully starve the crimeans out until they surrender or russia has to attack again

4. russia is pushed out of donbas and crimea = start to seek and fund militants and seperatists inside russia

The west plannes far to much ahead for anyone else to be prepared. Their creative mind is as impressiv as it is evil.

T.M Wallgren

Maybe it’s just Russia unable to sell its own program to those other countries. Serbs wants prosperity the Poles and Finns have. Instead of some mystic Orthodox nonsense EU can offer more reliable path. Irish people too have positive experiences. Co-operation works.

Frantisek

Western fringe groups supporting Russian military aggression seem to be writhing in a cacophonous vomit of disorganized anger. Facts are allowed to give way to fuzzy ideology. They are looking too much on mirror when seeing Nazis everywhere. Putin – blame only yourself.

“seeing Nazis everywhere”?! Slava Bandera?

label

Russia could declare that Finland had broken their peace agreement and attack them. After WW2 Finland was only allowed to exist if they signed a pledge to form no alliances ( they were on the German side in WW2).

They are now breaking the peace terms.

I doubt Russia will do anything though they are in denial that they are fighting NATO and are still conducting a military operation rather than fighting a war for their existence.

Putin has mentioned that nuclear missiles in Finland is the Red line, not NATO membership.

Matias

True fact is that Putin’s policy has united Europe to block Russian military aggression. His chezz playing was not at all smart. He undermines how attacking Ukraine will collapse his credibility in whole Europe. Just follow Serbia. Not just Sweden and Finland.

The west has followed the US’ lead against Russia since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Just before Russia “invaded” Ukraine Zelensky renounced the Minsk accords – which Merkel has admitted were agreed to in bad faith to buy time to arm and train Ukraine. He had also built up the occupation armies in Donbas and stepped up shelling. Many, probably most, of the residents of Donbas and Crimea view Russia as saving them from Nazi ethnic cleansing. Slava Bandera?

Shit country makes shit military

This is well know fact based on dozens of studies. Before last Feb just around 1/4 of Finns supported Nato membership. In March 2022 staggering over 70%. As we can see it was Russia’s own aggression changing attitudes among Finns. Vladimir Putin can blame only himself.

He did exactly what he was supposed to do. Shattering any idea for pan slavic or pan orthodox cooperation and cementing the idea that the only possible world order is the one in which america rules over everything. A foreign agend could have not done any better for the west. 4D chess my a….

The Crunge

Didn’t the guy who headed the Mozart group say the Ukie military groups in Bakhmut were getting casualty rates of seventy percent?

100 billion in military aid and still getting mauled by this shit country with shit army. Good thing America and the west didn’t go after a non shit country, imagine how many would die if that were the case.

We must make short trip to near past to understand Putin’s Russia. In 1987, Yanov published the book “The Russian Challenge and the Year 2000”. The cover of the book featured a new-age icon with Christ surrounded by Soviet symbols. Yanov predicted that the new Russia that would soon come would profess a faith in which the forms would come from the Orthodox religion and the content from the fascist elements of Soviet ideology and practices, embellished with Slavophile anti-modernism that would emphasize anti-Semitism.

Yeah preventing the west to plunder everything seems to have become antisemitism somehow.

Finno-Ugro

He, Alexander Yanov was a real Cassandra, who already in the 1970s predicted that orthodox fascism would rise to power in Russia and drew attention to the Russian neo-right, whose existence no one else seemed to be able to even imagine in the Soviet Union of the 70s..

South Front Comments

The comments are littered with pro-western individuals (if we can call them that). The comment likes and dislikes have turned heavily against the pro russian stance. This gives the illusion of an anti Russian sentiment around the world however I can assure you this is psyops at its finest. On the Saker’s website he talked about this at one point stating that even after blocking these bots they continued to try and comment meaning they weren’t human. I’m not saying all comments are bots, but its pretty obvious what’s going on here. SF fix your comment section or turn it off completely. If you think you are pro free speech, the only thing you are doing is enabling fake comments and psyop operations to play out on your site.

Recently there seems to be a distinct pro unipolar shift in comments on SF. Two of my posts challenging the fascist views expressed were deleted. Maybe more than bots is involved.

Elgar

The Saker is sniffing tail of Martyanov, Martyanov that of MacGregor and Larry Johnson. The circle is small and not much growing. At the same time Russian military is not looking very impressive at all. Let’s see are things changing radically more glorious.

The Crunge

Yeah, the Putin haters are in high numbers on this comment section. Very odd for South Front. I was wondering what’s going on with that.

John Kesich

I have never understood why Finland and Sweden linked their entry into NATO. Is it like school kids holding hands as they walk past a cemetery in the dark? Of course, the idea that NATO membership will bring them security is pure nonsense.

it will take Finland long enough that Ukraine is defeated and then the barbaric nuclear war advocate and shithead Sanna Marin can be violently removed in a special operation

The German peasant stock Stoltenberg looks ever like the deranged Ribbentrop. The Scandinavians lost their fighting ability over a thousand years ago when all the warriors sailed away to warmer climes and never came back: So stop stirring up fights only others can win for you.

Finland is as close, if not closer, than Ukraine to Russia’s borders. If Russia cannot accept Ukraine into NATO because of the strategic danger, even less can it tolerate Finland’s membership. The example of the Soviet missiles in Cuba applies to both. What will be the “technical-military” measures to be adopted in case the Finnish accession occurs?

How low those nordics have fallen. They are cucks of the Anglo Suckers. During WW2 they were sympathetic to the Nazis

hash

label

Not just sympathetic they were fully on the German side 1941-44. They then sued for peace and changed sides expelling German forces from Finland. Part of the peace settlement included them being forbidden to join any alliances. Joining an alliance that Germany is part of (NATO) breaks that peace settlement and could leave them open to war with Russia.

Shit country makes shit military

Even before the Winter War 1939 , Finland had no chance of avoiding an attack after the negotiations in Moscow had ended. Even a child understands that Mainila’s shots were, like Kuusinen’s government, just clumsy cosmetics.

First divisions were sent from South behind the Finnish from frontier in Sept 1939. Negotiations were just Stalin’s shadow operation.

Shit country makes shit military

To understand Putin and his fantasies with Ukraine we must remember that in Stalin’s Finnish policy, which he hardly knew how to take seriously, he had fallen victim to the tyrant’s dilemma. Everyone hurried to tell the Leader only what he wanted to hear. After all, he could barely hear the echoes of his own thoughts. It isolated him from reality. Same has happened to Putin with Ukraine.

Elgar

Seems to be an old Russian perestrahovka: when you only do what you are told, no one can accuse you of official misconduct. When the power of the great Leader becomes absolute, it is wise from your own point of view to always try to please it before anything else. Telling the unpleasant truth is probably not enough to bring the dictator back to his senses, but it will most likely lead to the messenger being shot, figuratively speaking at this point..

Putin lost credibility. He has encircled himself and Russia.

T.M Wallgren

No more respected leader at all. More like some Joe Gallo.

Elgar

The attack on Ukraine caused euphoric joy in the Russian embassy: America would finally be shown who is the master here. Then, when the attack went as it did, the euphoria faded, but the belligerence did not..

Finno-Ugro

Yes, Putin has lost all his credibility. Russia has to pay the price now. They are loosing even energy war.

Russia has to sell oil now below price of 40 dollars and European gas prices have went down sharply. In EU Nord Pool electricity prices have gone down too. EU certainly not down on its knees.

Frantisek

In public, Putin treats his subordinates arrogantly and contemptuously and humiliates them in front of the people like a street boy to his weakest. It is obvious that he imagines that he knows everything better than those who provide him with information.

In such an atmosphere, it is not worth waiting for decisions that are based on harsh facts and that could be fortunate for all parties or even those who made them.

Finland and Sweden join nazis again, what a “surprise”. This time there will be no proposals to exchange small area to bigger one as it was with Vyborg. Finns refused this kind proposal, because believed in support of german nazis, and lost not only Vyborg, but also Petsamo with access to Barents sea. In 1944 two raids of 2 air armies (~500 planes) were enough for Finland to capitulate and turn its weapons against germans. Germans totally destroyed several towns at northern Finland such as Rovaniemi. This time Finland want to be destroyed completely. Nobody will send troops or planes, “Iskanders” with nuclear warhead will be enough.
