Epic Fail: Israel Says Its Complex Air-Defense Network Failed To Intercept Soviet Missile Launched By Syria

Dec. 29, 2016, photo, released by the semi-official Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), shows long-range S-200 missile fired in a military drill in the port city of Bushehr, on the northern coast of Persian Gulf, Iran. (Amir Kholousi, ISNA via AP)

Israel has acknowledged that its state-of-the-art, multi-tiered air defense network had failed to intercept a Soviet air-defense missile launched by Syria.

The missile, a 5V21-type of an S-200 air-defense system, was launched by the Syrian Arab Air Defense Forces at Israeli warplanes preparing to launch airstrikes on the outskirts of the Syrian capital, Damascus, early on April 22. The missile missed its target but went on to land some 250 km deep in Israel, 40 km away from the Dimona nuclear reactor.

During a press conference in Tel Aviv, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz acknowledged that the military had failed to intercept the stray Syrian missile.

“The IDF worked to prevent a potential strike on critical assets in the State of Israel. A SA-5-model of surface-to-air missile was fired, passed through the area,” Gantz said. “There was an attempt to intercept it, which did not succeed. We are still investigating the event.”

Gantz did not explain how Israel’s complex and expensive air-defense network, which consists of dozens of Iron Dome, David Sling, Patriot and Arrow batteries, had failed to intercept a missile developed in the Soviet Union all the way back in the 60s.

Israel responded to the incident by targeting the Syrian S-200 battery which launched the missile. Several other targets were also struck.

The Syrian Arab News Agency reported that four Syrian service members were injured as a result of Israel’s retaliatory strikes. However, pro-government sources revealed that an officer, 1st Lt. Bassel Khadur, was killed in the strikes.

The exact circumstances of what happened early on April 22 between Israel and Syria are yet to be revealed. However, there is no doubt that the incident exposed some serious problems in the Israeli air-defense network, which costed the country as well as the US billions of dollars.

I read some comments on an Israeli comment board and you’re right. They didn’t even bother to think about the fact that their vaunted AD is shit? The majority that I read were wanting to attack Syria…for shit Israel started…and people think Americans are brainwashed. Damn!

I’ve never seen a culture tell itself so many lies; the US has been infected by it for decades as well. My favorite reply to a Zionist, is that they not only lie to the world about everything, they lie to themselves about everything as well. It doesn’t fail to make them angry.

After approximately 20 years now on Middle Eastern political forums supporting the Palestinians, for me it now boils down to what I posted above about Zionists:

They live in a Propaganda Bubble.

Years ago, maybe 2014 or so, Arutz Shitva published a report about a secret new Israeli technology that they could now make public – the Wind Tunnel.

I rest my case as I die laughing.

Read Mark Perry’s 3 parter about the Intelligence War surrounding the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Makes for very interesting reading and explains a lot about the Israeli mindset….which doesn’t appear to have changed – at all.

In Syria, they are most likely hitting mainly dummy targets. Hezbollah used this to good effect in 2006 (discussed in Perry’s analysis), the NVA used it against the Yanks in Vietnam and Cambodia (I have an eye witness account of what they did) and the Soviets/Russians have been using this strategy since WWII.

SA-5 blew apart in the air and shrapnel fell over a large area including in a swimming pool

No one was injured or a War would have started … eh?

Apparently the ‘misguided’ missile was not shot out of the sky by Israeli anti-missiles … the IDF is looking into the why’s and wherefore’s … eh?

BUT … the IAF made sure to attack the launchers and went back into Attack-mode for a 2nd Helping … lol

Fires burned into the night … and munitions depots alight … lol

Injured and dead reported … eh?

    Coming ta git ya …

    1. Ewan says:

Are you making this up as you go along Hasbara Troll? – NO reports of shrapnel anywhere.

      1. tzatz says:

Israel is a liberal democracy with a free press … shrapnel fell over an area and some fell in a swimming pool during the middle of the night …

If there were dead Israelis … a war would have ensued … full stop

Damascus would be attacked directly not the IRGC depots …

        Count on it ..

        1. Ricky Miller says:

If Damascus is attacked en masse that would be a violation of Israel’s agreement with Russia to not use force in quantity enough to affect the outcome of the civil conflict. If Russia then decides to close off Syrian airspace to Israel your war will be over before it starts, and if Israeli aircraft violate Russian restrictions then we’ll all get to finally see the S-400 system in combat action, shooting down Israeli F-35’s, F-15’s, and F-16’s. Hopefully in volumes large enough to alter the aerospace balance of power between Israel and Egypt.

To help with that I would ask you to encourage the Israeli government to be all tough and ignore Russian airspace restriction notifications, when they come. I ‘ll be looking forward to the results, like lot’s of smoking airframes falling from the sky after being damaged by a nearby exploding air defense warhead. It’ ll be so cool even you’re going to be impressed. See you then.

          1. tzatz says:

The S-400 would be a pile of rubble … see you then

        Iron Toomb

    2. Ricky Miller says:

All that doesn’t disguise the fact that one wayward air defense missile penetrated deep into Israel. A coordinated and large scale strike of 100 missiles or more, say 1,000 Hezbollah missiles in a single afternoon, would represent a serious threat to Israeli security. After all the money and all the time Israel is still where we left her in 2006…vulnerable.

If Syria wasn’t fighting off a multi-front civil conflict she would have the freedom of movement enough to respond to Israeli strikes with strikes of her own, which in time would deter Israeli strikes before they are launched. Add in Russia hopefully and finally granting Syria’s government control and operation of the S-300 systems and things are far less rosy for Israel than your diatribe bravado suggests.

  6. Ivan Freely says:

military had failed to intercept the stray Syrian missile.

    BULLSHIT

  7. Steve Standley says:

This was probably NOT a “stray missile”. Israelis lie about everything, especially their own casualties. I think Iran or Syria attacked the nuke plant as an eye for an eye retaliation, and the Jews were unable to shoot it down. I’m sure more information will follow.

          2. LRcaptain says:

Russia has 5 bio warfare brigades training in the containment and usage of chemical biological weaponry and you are trying to me that they would not have been deployed even once to a covid infected area, to gather samples to analyze them in mobile labs that are assigned to the brigades. To use all that data putting their research weeks if not months ahead, A gap that forced west to cry foul and make false of the Russian stealing western Documents.

Hell EU has banned vaccines from US company for the risk of dangerous blood clots.

AstraZeneca is a European co … Johnson & Johnson is American … both have an issue with blood clots that are EXTREMELY RARE but can be deadly

6 people out of 7 million developed clots … 1 died

300,000 were infected today in India … 4000 died … those numbers will increase exponentially … the variants are easily transmissible and lead to death

Iran is suffering too … a PLAFUE ON THEM …. may the Ayatollah be struck down and suffer …. I could give a sh Xt

          4. LRcaptain says:

now that you have just said you stand by what you wrote

“both have an issue with blood clots that are EXTREMELY RARE but can be deadly”
so now trying to tell that Russians ones have no issues, no issues at all?

          5. tzatz says:

I don’t know about the Russisn vaccine EXCEPT the PM of Argentina was fully vaccinated and still got Covid …. THAY would piXx me off

The Russian vaccine is NOT for me … I got a Pfizer and will have the 2nd dose in Ontario when my turn comes up … I’d take it Tom oof I could but I’ll wait my turn patiently

        3. Captain Freedom says:

Isreal is the world’s lab according to Pfizer, you know that?

          1. tzatz says:

Yes … great demographics from all corners of the World

The data is shared with Pfizer … that’s why it was #1 choice … but they paid the most for each vaccine …

            Life is precious … eh?

          2. Captain Freedom says:

It was the #1 choice because they only have Pfizer.
They themselves got no clue about the effects of non-approved and non-tested “medicine” ,the human trials have just started… and your are participating.
Theres no way you can twist this to make it seem reasonable

          3. tzatz says:

            3 trials were done …

            You’re ignorant …

          4. LRcaptain says:

            so are you
ingnorant of russia has 5 bio warfare brigades training in the containment and usage of chemical biological weaponry and you are trying to me that they would not have been deployed even once to a covid infected area, to gather samples to analyze them in mobile labs that are assigned to the brigades. To use all that data putting their research weeks if not months ahead, A gap that forced west to cry foul and make false of the Russian stealing western Documents related to covid research.

IT IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE CONFIRMED
            NEEDS TO BE CONFIRMED
-> that means they got no fukkin clue.

            REAL WORLD DATA
            REAL WORLD DATA
-> and that means that the vaccination campaign IS THE TEST TRIAL. They didn’t test it beforehand so THEY TEST IT N.O.W.

            DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

            It’s a novel Coronavirus … NEW

Your comment is regarding passing it on to others … if you’ve had both shots … they now know from the data that YOU do not pass it on …

That’s from Times of Israel … the article went on to say that SA-5’s have landed in Cyprus / Jordan / Israel on other occasions to which they give dates …. hello?

          3. LRcaptain says:

to say that is has landed contradicts the very comment I’m calling you a lair, so what was it did it explode in the air or did it land.

          4. tzatz says:

Times of Israel says it exploded ‘in the air’

          5. LRcaptain says:

            very well

          6. tzatz says:

The SA-5 is designed to EXPLODE in mid-air to destroy an airplane … It is NOT a surface to surface missile

            So … that’s clear

          7. tzatz says:

I thought you were interested in military issues … YOU should know that the SA-5 was never meant to land and explode … it was meant to explode beside a plane to destroy it?

So … what is your interest in the Arab / Israeli Conflict?

      2. disTheeNot says:

        it didn’t hit the ground?
        wow.
you definitely are the chosen ones
        lol

    3. zman says:

I have the same thought. Israel may have targeted an AD system as a cover, to ensure their sheeple do not know the truth. As is widely known, an AD missile would not have the explosive power that has been reported. Many in Israel have stated that it was the loudest explosion they have ever heard. It appears that people in the northern end of the country felt buildings shake as well. Being that Israel has used surface to surface missiles in Gaza and this still dwarfs them, speaks volumes. Whether the Dimona plant was targeted or not, this event should open some eyes as to Israel’s invulnerability. It should also be noted that there is a US base very near Dimona. Hitting it would drastically affect US/Iranian talks, not to mention possible US ‘retaliation’. Lots of issues here. Israeli’s should stop and think what the effect would have been had it been a missile swarm from Iran. They wouldn’t be around today to contemplate that.

      1. Steve Standley says:

        Good points.

    4. Not a fan of Israel says:

I believe they “put one across Israel’s bows”……so to speak. Taunting the Israelis….the Israelis certainly look and sound like they’re panicking….even on forums like this.

      1. Steve Standley says:

I think you’re right. This is the kind of thing Iran would do as a warning; I think the Israelis are having a combination of panic and glee. They’ve been spoiling for war with Iran for 25 years at least.

        1. Not a fan of Israel says:

The Iranians remind me a lot of the Chinese mindset. They don’t telegraph their true intentions except through officials like their Foreign Minister. Yes, an IRGC spokesperson will make some statement or other but they are beholden to the Iranian Govt in what they actually do. Which is fine by me. I have a lot of respect for the Iranian FM.

        2. Not a fan of Israel says:

No other Intelligence Agency I can think of acts in the way Mossad does re. their operational “coups”. What they do, in an Intelligence framework, is patently absurd. They go “public” all the time, boasting! Weird. And when you analyse what they’d ACTUALLY done……laughable. More Spin than a merry-go-round.

No harm done … this time … eh?

but shrapnel fell over an area …

      1. Selbstdenker says:

What is it with this eh? You reaslly should visit a doctor.

        1. tzatz says:

Ah … a dr in the house … eh?

You should visit a proctologist yourself … eh?

    1. Liberal guy says:

This is the regards to the zios and there air defence hahahahaha

      1. tzatz says:

They bought 2 Iron Dome from Israel … they’re cool if they deploy them

        1. Liberal guy says:

First intercept few simple Palestinian rockets even intercepting such rockets is not easy for the idf ur iron dome even can’t intercept all of them hahahahaha

  9. nyomarek says:

Israel is merely having Deferred Success in thwarting that massively advanced S-200 missile. Expect glorious celebrations from Bibi soon!

    1. Liberal guy says:

Well the missle was not so advanced but the zio air defence is very primative hahahahahah

  10. JIMI JAMES says:

    Nothing new,yawn))

  11. Voldemort says:

In their defense it isn’t supposed to be 100% coverage and they never claimed it is.

    1. Selbstdenker says:

Well , the rocket went in direction of Dimona, which one would expect a highest value target, and hence has highest defense priority.

      1. Voldemort says:

I doubt the failure was due to prioritization of the expected impact area. There wasn’t any expected area in the first place. Its not a ballistic missile, a stray land-air missile can change course due to the wind as well. I think location is irrelevant, rather failed due to no detection.

  12. Pave Way IV says:

What we know is that every time an Israeli AD system fires a missile, there will be multiple cell phone videos of the launch or flight from people on the ground. Everyone gets excited about a launch and the sirens usually start in the area ahead of time. This happens regardless whether people can see the incoming missile at all. They damn sure see the AD missiles launching. A missile headed to central Israel would have multiple air defence missiles from several sites launched at it. You don’t just fire a single interceptor and hope it works, nor do you let a missed missile continue to fly half-way across your country without further attempts to down it. Of course Israel is going to spin this as something it’s not. What a failure.

Israel AD systems fail to detect/intercept missile that destroyed Tomer rocket engine facility.
Israel AD systems fail to detect/intercept ‘Dimona’ missile (not an SA-2)

Both explosions were huge – not Fateh-2. ‘Dimona’ may have been three different missiles if video of strike is real.

    1. Steve Standley says:

Robert Inlakesh video certainly looked like multiple explosions.

    2. Liberal guy says:

Ur comment is pleasure to my eyes so true

    3. disTheeNot says:

in other words they are in deep s*it

    4. Selbstdenker says:

This is the reason why most of the Iron Dome “intercepts” happen at night, and debris areas are sealed off immediately. not to allow anyone to see, what debris came down (only Iron dome, as there were no incoming missiles in the first place).

      1. tzatz says:

Patriot missile was fired and failed NOT Iron Dome

        1. Lone Ranger says:

          It was actually the Arrow.

          1. tzatz says:

The SA-5 is designed NOT to land, that is, it’s designed to blow up in mid-air to destroy a jet airplane … it is NOT a surface to surface missile!

          2. Lone Ranger says:

            That’s true.

          3. Not a fan of Israel says:

Who cares? It traversed Israel and your widdle popguns couldn’t hit it.

          4. tzatz says:

            They’re not ‘mine’ …

            • my interest is simply to watch the Arabs continue to flounder and sink

            Inshallah

          5. Not a fan of Israel says:

Oh I see, now they’re not yours. Before they were.

The Future is about to land orlright…..in Israel.

          6. Not a fan of Israel says:

            I’ll raise with a David’s Sling.

          7. zman says:

They also reported the excellent US Patriots were also fired up. Fizzle.

          8. Not a fan of Israel says:

Oner the Zionist clowns reckons Israel has something called Iron Sting, a laser defense system. Probably something stolen from the Americans OR they built an online game platform and believe it could be a reality one day. The chances of Israelis actually building something like that from scratch are practically ZERO.

    5. tzatz says:

      BS …. lol

Write a short story …. fiction is your forte

      1. Selbstdenker says:

When the house of cards finally fails… LMAO!

    6. zman says:

I love all the blather from the Israeli’s as to this or that…In reality it does not matter what kind of missile, it does not matter if accidental or not. As you point out, what does matter is that it flew the entire length of Israel and was not taken out. Couple that with the fact that Israel specifically enhanced their AD in this area, as they attempted to reassure Israeli’s in the aftermath of the Natanz attack, and this becomes Israel’s worst nightmare. Likely you are right in regard Tomer, as well as the type missile… There are reports that this was either a Tashrin or Fatah 110. No one in their right mind believes this was a SAM5 that made such a loud explosion. Why no pics from Israel, showing no damage?..only bits of debris? Now the Israeli’s are believing their own crap…but they have to, otherwise??? Yes, massive fail.

      1. Not a fan of Israel says:

…and they say “No casualties”….from an explosion that size…..at a factory? Really?

    7. Not a fan of Israel says:

There must have been casualties at the Tomer site. It looked like a BIG explosion ta me.

    8. Not a fan of Israel says:

Syria could completely destroy say…the Knesset building and israel would be…..”We decided to demolish it. There. Now we can build a better one! “

  13. disTheeNot says:

didn’t the ussa dod just buy some iron dome hardware?

Well done Syria and Iran, but sadly “pro-government sources revealed that an officer, 1st Lt. Bassel Khadur, was killed in the [retaliatory] strikes.” RIP.

What is here to celebrate except more Israel strikes on Syrian territory whilst Zionist Putinyahoo sits on the toilet and the flush isn’t working! Cue his band of desperate 5D chess apologists.

      1. Free man says:

So why are the cowards not firing their hundreds of missiles?
How many nuclear scientists the Israelis need to kill and how many Iranian nuclear facilities do they need to blow up before your mullahs do something?

        1. Lone Ranger says:

You lost in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Ukraine…

        1. tzatz says:

Syrians are clueless … just pressing buttons … eh?

It’s unsafe to fly when they start firing anti-missiles … that’s why Israel always attack at 1 AM …. fewer domestic flights

C’mon … your crew are useless … they’ve met their betters … keep your head down slug

          1. Rhodium 10 says:

            I’m hurt …

          3. LRcaptain says:

think about the long comments me and Zion and how IDF can beat Hezbollah, ever since 2006 IDF soldiers and have been over worked to death, but generals are fucking and can’t command on a modern battle field.

don’t under stand that air campaign would needed be stepped up to daily of over 70 missile each.

          4. tzatz says:

I am unaware of your position …

I am CLEAR on Zion’s position

            Please clarify …

          5. LRcaptain says:

Israel has 760,000 man power yes

the 2006 the IDF military thought that is would be a cake walk, and ended up loosing 1,200 wounded and 200 dead to 900 Hezbollah dead.

this resulted in the IDF withdrawing and the military leadership in charge of operation all being dismissed.

What I have observed is the new military leadership kept drilling the IDF harder and harder. They seem to blame the infantry for losses.

Hezbollah was built to soak up IDF attacks like the Vietcong were to the US. In Hezbollah’s Case this is a three to one ratio. so 65,000 Hezbollah members plus 15,000 reserves that is 80,000 vs 240,000 or almost a third of IDF manpower.

Hezbollah can fire 10x more rockets then Israel can intercept. this is to knock out IDF air, armor and artillery support. Leaving only motorized infantry to launch an attack against Hezbollah.

Zion thinks that Hezbollah can be smashed with a hammer.

I think Hezbollah is a sponge and needs to be cut apart piece by piece.

          6. tzatz says:

  18. zman says:

This could have been much worse…for everyone. There is a US base near there and I postulated long ago that it could be used as a trip wire for US retaliation in a FF scenario. As for the missile, not sure about what this shows. I find it hard to believe that an exploding S200 would shake and rattle buildings over 50 miles away as reported. I also loved the way they informed their people only after the missile exploded, not in real time as is usual. At the very least, this is quite the wake-up call for Israelis who are convinced that they are safe. What goes around…

There’s at least three U.S.military-manned and operated radar facilities near Dimona:

        1. Dimona Radar Center to the west – twin 400m X band towers; OTH radar for ballistic missiles
        2. AN/TPY-2 on Mt. Karen – part of THAAD system
        3. JLENS aerostat fixed mooring site/complex – long-range aircraft/cruise missile warning

The U.S. built a permanent military ‘base’ for these personnel co-located at the IDF AD school/base nearby. https://www.defensenews.com/breaking-news/2017/09/18/us-breaks-ground-for-new-permanent-base-in-israel/

Syria is not our target, they pay the price for helping Iran. They know our redlines, and it won’t make difference because in the end Israel and Iran will engage in a war.

        1. Leif Oskar Zetterstrøm says:

Israel gave IS a missile and ordered them to fire the missile from Syrian territory so that Israel appears in the media that they are defending themselves. Of course, the missile could hit the target but was set on hitting outside. But war is war and all means are accepted in wartime.

    2. AJ says:

Thats not the point, whilst no damage was done it highlights that even Israeli air defence has shortcomings

    3. James says:

lol “Big deal”. Yeah I would say it’s a pretty big deal given how arrogant Israel is.

  22. Leif Oskar Zetterstrøm says:

There are traditions that Muslims kill Muslims and black man kills black man, have no problem with that. But I do not like that someone pays poor people to escalate the hobby they pursue.

  23. Zyklon B says:

Iran should just level that bullshit reactor. The land of the ”Chosen People” now a contaminated wasteland, imagine!

  24. Not a fan of Israel says:

…..and that was a much older version. How will Israel defend against precision striking hypersonic missles?

    Answer: not….terribly….well.

  25. Roy Sonman says:

    More likely Urban Moving Systems.

  26. Willing Conscience (The Truths says:

So what we thought would’ve been one of the best protected areas of Israel, isn’t really well protected at all.
Just imagine the Iranians delight in this news, now they know there’s a direct path between where the missile was launched, and the nuclear facility in Israel, and that path has blind spots, WOW, that means if the Iranians wanted to send in a few long range missiles to take out the nuclear facility they’d probably get through, Israel will be having nightmares now.

  27. Not a fan of Israel says:

Israel put up a sign years ago that basically said, “We are dangerous. Don’t even think about attacking us.”

Some of us knew it was ALL BS.
