On Saturday, Colonel Tamer Rifai Spokesperson for the Egyptian Army announced that the Egyptian Army foiled a suicide attack of ISIS on one of its checkpoint around Arish city in northern Sinai.
According to Colonel Rifai, the attackers were wearing Egyptian Army uniforms and explosive belts under it. However, the Egyptian Army soldiers discovered the attackers and killed them before they reached the checkpoint.
Meanwhile, the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq reported that ISIS fighters repelled an attack of the Egyptian Army south of al-Midan village west of Arish city. Amaq said that ISIS snipers killed 2 Egyptian soldiers. Moreover, a Humvee of the Egyptian Army was destroyed by ISIS fighters with an IED during the clashes according to Amaq.
This is considered the second attack of ISIS against the Egyptian Army in the last 48 hours. The two attacks on October 13 and 14 prove that ISIS fighters in Sinai are still capable of launching defensive, and offensive operation against the Egyptian Army.
As a respond to the new attacks the Egyptian Army will likely launch a security operation around Arish city to eliminate ISIS cells. Sadly, such operations are only effective for short period as ISIS fighters in Sinai proved that they have the experience needed to regroup and relaunch attacks after such security operations.
