The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan announced on October 24 that its forces had downed a small drone over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
According to an official statement by the Azerbaijani MoD, the drone, that was allegedly launched by Armenian forces, was downed on October 23 afternoon with “electronic warfare” means.
The small quadcopter drone, which was apparently made of commercially available parts, was armed a light explosive charge.
Armenia has been developing suicide drones and loitering munitions for a few years now. Nevertheless, this is the first documented use of such system by Armenian forces since the outbreak of the battle in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Azerbaijani military maintains a large arsenal of Israeli-made loitering munitions, which are being deployed against Armenian forces on a regular basis.
The suicide drone used by Armenian forces appears to be primitive. However, terrorist groups managed to inflict some losses on government forces in Syria and Iraq using off-the-shelf drones.
