A new attack with armed drones on the Russian Hmeimim Air Base, located on the Syrian coast, took place late on January 19.
In a short press release, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said that armed drones which attempted to attack the air base were intercepted by air-defense forces.
“Air-defense system intercepted drones launched by terrorist groups at the Hmeimim Air Base in Lattakia’s countryside,” the press release reads.
Local sources said that at least two anti-aircraft missiles were launched to intercept the drones when they approached the Hmeimim Air Base. No material or human losses were reported as a result of the failed attack.
Since last year, dozens of drone attacks targeted military and civilian installations around Greater Idlib. Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is reportedly manufacturing and operating the armed drones used in these attacks.
Earlier this week, a drone attack on a military academy in the vicinity of Aleppo city claimed the lives of two Syrian service members.
