The Turkish military could launch a military operation in northeastern Syrian in the upcoming 48 hours, Nedaa Syria reported on October 5, citing sources familiar with the situation.
The sources told the pro-opposition site that the operation, which will supposedly be called “Well of Peace,” will target the border town of Tell Abyad in its first phase. Later, the operation will be developed further.
“Turkish military reinforcements arrived today at the border with Syria, stationed on the opposite side of the towns of Tal Abyad in the countryside of Raqqa and Ras al-Ain in the governorate of al-Hasakah,” Nedaa Syria’s reporter said.
According to the reporter, the reinforcement included highly-experienced special forces units of the Turkish military and mine clearing vehicles.
Syira’s northeastern region is controlled by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Ankara views the Kurdish-dominated group as a threat to its national security.
Nedaa Syria claimed that militants of the National Syrian Army (NSA) will be taking part in the operation. Most of them will be locals from Raqqa, al-Hasakah and northern Aleppo.
A few hours earlier, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the Turkish military is ready to launch a military operation in northeastern Syria to fight “terrorists” and bring “peace” to the region. The president added that the operation could begin “today or tomorrow.”
